Waterloo Recreation Area spans 20,000 acres across Jackson and Washtenaw counties, with over 47 miles of hiking trails and several lakes suitable for recreational activities. The area offers numerous camping options within a 20-mile radius of Grass Lake, Michigan. Most campgrounds are open from April through October, with limited winter accessibility at select locations.
What to do
Swim at the beach: Bishop Lake Campground features a sandy swimming area with clear water. "The beach was nice but you have to walk a trail to get to it from the campground or drive. Nice walking trails. Our favorite was the lake for kayaking," says Debra B.
Mountain biking: Pontiac Lake Recreation Area provides world-class mountain bike trails accessible from the campground. "Extensive mountain biking trails and the lake is open to boating, kayaking, and other water sports. Park offers lots of private sites!" notes Mary H.
Horseback riding: Hell Creek Ranch & Campground offers direct access to horse trails. "A horse barn (Heavenly Horse Stables) right on property offering riding lessons, trail rides and meet and greets with their houses and other barn animals, my daughter wanted to move here," shares Ashley S., highlighting one of the few dedicated equestrian facilities near Grass Lake.
Fishing opportunities: Seven Lakes State Park provides excellent fishing conditions. "Sand Lake was our spot and the water was breath taking - it's a small pond really, but great for kayaking. Crystal clear, clean water, a good public beach," writes Andy B.
What campers like
Private campsites: Pontiac Lake Recreation Area offers secluded sites with natural barriers. "Very nice sites. Wooded and up north feel. Great hiking and world class mountain bike trails. Nice big lake," mentions Christie V. about this camping option approximately 45 minutes from Grass Lake.
Clean facilities: Bishop Lake Campground maintains well-kept amenities. "The campgrounds restrooms and showers were clean. Our campsite had a view of the lake, but no shade," notes Debra B.
Family-friendly atmosphere: Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern campground provides activities for children. "Spent 4 nights and 5 days camping with my husband and 2 kids. We had fun and the kids had a blast. They rode bikes around the loop and loved swimming and the playground," shares Kim S.
Rustic cabin options: For those seeking alternatives to tent camping near Grass Lake, rustic cabins are available. "Had the pleasure of visiting first weekend in February, on the coldest weekend of the year! Nice little cabin set in about 800' from where you park. It has a table, wood stove, and 4 sets of bunks in a back room," describes Mike S.
What you should know
Mosquito prevalence: Brighton Recreation Area can have significant insect activity. "When we rolled in the first thing we noticed was that everyone had screen houses set up. We didn't have anything but our tent and a hammock with a big net so everyone got bitten up while cooking and hanging out by the fire. It was pretty miserable," warns Ryan F.
Site privacy varies: Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern has differing levels of seclusion between sites. "The campground has some nice full-grown trees, but isn't extremely wooded. It does not feel like you're up north, but I'm giving 5 stars because of how well it is maintained. The trees offer shade, but are spaced out enough that a group can pull their campers around for privacy," explains Jonah H.
Electrical hookups: Some campgrounds require extensions to reach power sources. "Most electrical posts are designed to accommodate at least 2 adjoining lots, and as many as 4. This in itself is not a concern until you realize the posts are way too far away to reach without an extension," notes Nick W. about Sleepy Hollow State Park.
Beach access considerations: At Seven Lakes State Park, the beach area requires a short walk from many campsites. "There is a boat launch on one end of campground and the amazing beach on the other. The water is clear and warm (perfect lake for swimming)," explains Kerri R.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Seven Lakes State Park Campground offers play areas near the water. "There is a very nice play area for the children and clean bathrooms. The boat launch was near our camp site which was nice not having to leave the campground," mentions Debra B.
Kid-friendly water activities: Bishop Lake features special water attractions. "Such a cool place to enjoy with the kids, we had a blast at Jump Island!" shares Jillian E., referring to the inflatable water park available during summer months for an additional fee.
Biking opportunities: Many campgrounds have paved roads for children to ride. "They rode bikes around the loop and loved swimming and the playground. Facilities were nice and clean and many sites had trees to give shade at certain times of day," notes Kim S. about Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern.
Swimming conditions: Brighton Recreation Area provides good beach areas for families. "This is a nice place to camp if you don't mind the bigger parks. There is a decent sandy beach here with a playground and volleyball net," states Mike B.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: Hell Creek Ranch & Campground offers various site types for different RVs. "Great private campground with rustic, elec, water/elec (30 amp), and concrete pad sites. Very clean campground with nice shower house. Owners are very friendly," says Jason F.
RV access: Waterloo Recreation Area has specific sites better suited for larger rigs. "Nice flat campsites near the beach area. Site was a little small for our 38foot - we had to go sideways which opened us up to other campers," cautions Beth G.
Extension cords needed: Many equestrian campgrounds near Grass Lake, Michigan require additional electrical equipment. "If you are hoping to hook up to electrical, bring extension cords; some hook ups are exceptionally far away from the designated RV parking pad," advises Mary H.
Dump station locations: Most campgrounds in the area provide sanitary dump facilities. "Great private campground with direct connections to the Waterloo Pinckney trail system. Priced reasonably," notes Jason F. about Hell Creek Ranch, one of the preferred horse-friendly camping options in the region.
