School Section Lake Veteran's Park Campground

    Nice campground

Was a decent place to camp- lots are very close though! Luckily in the fall it wasn’t very busy. Nice little lake on property. Fire pits in odd spot near the road. No pets allowed-not even a cat that stays inside in your camper! Also- there is a $7 a day fee for out of the county. Even when you arrive late at night.

    Newaygo State Park Campground

    Good summer weekend destination

If you have any watercraft, this is a good weekender spot. The hike trails are easily traversed and if you ask the camp ranger at reception, you can also rent single or tandem kayaks for *quite a reasonable price in varying time blocks if you don't have any watercraft of your own - you just tell them what time that you want to start and they will bring the kayak to the boat launch for you, which is great. Trash dumpsters and firewood are available at the campground entrance (if wood for some reason is unavailable, there's a BP gas station nearby that also sells it for $1 cheaper a bundle). The designated swimming area for the site is not the best unless you have small children, but if you like towed tubing, there's plenty of that happening mid-lake, outside of the other pontoons and boats. Also, despite the features listed here, there are no shower facilities available at this site, so bring bath wipes if you want to stay fresh! The water pump was also inoperable during my stay, but came prepared with plenty of bottled water anyway. The campfire pits also do not have grates for grilling/cooking any hot food, but if you have any cast iron cookware, you can get around this by placing your fire pit logs as evenly as possible so you can set your cookware direct on the flame (or just bring a mini grill if you prefer). Also close enough to Grand Haven so you can spend a few hours there as part of a mini get-away and still get to your site within about an hour or so.

Northern Exposure Campground & RV Park

Awesome for Families & Big Groups / All Ages

This campground is perfect for campers of most experience and age levels.  If you are looking for rugged, wilderness / secluded camping its probably not your place but for everyone else it's a hidden gem.

Nice spots both on the river show and across the road.  Easy water access for very little children and non-motorized boats / Kayaks, etc.  Nicely equipped playground and evening activities at the Camp Store/Office on special weekends.

This campground has the cleanest restroom/shower facilities of any campground I have been too.  Also the staff is very friendly and helpful.

One tip, fire pits do not have grill tops attached and the pit opening is pretty wide.

    Newaygo State Park Campground

    Hamocker's Paradise

This site turned out to be a diamond in the rough. Due to our lack of planning and seeking reservations, Newaygo State Park was one of the few campsites with short notice availability. As we entered we were greeted by spacious plots with enough treeline between them to cover up even the loudest of snorers. We took the next few minutes mapping out our perfect hammock setup. With so many options, we settled on our spots and built up the rest of camp. Nestled in and ready to explore, we walked to the edge of our site to the head of the beach trail to check out what we had gotten ourselves into. Less than a mile hike later and we made it to the 'beach front'. It wasn't much. The shallow buoyed off swim area was sandy, yet immediately upon passing the buoys we were met by very thick seaweed. Nonetheless, the view was breathtaking, there are plenty of lookout points over the lake to spend quiet time posted up in a hammock reading or whatever else you do in a hammock. Nighttime came and we were around the fire. We read that quiet hours start at 10:00 so being conscious of the expectations we kept our conversation at a low level and had light music playing from a phone. Around 11:10 a park ranger stopped by asking us to turn off the music, no big. But it seemed to us that no music after quiet hours should also be a part of the rules. All in all, we had an amazing weekend and we're all looking forward to our next weekend spent here. Thanks, Newaygo State Park!

One nite stay in cabin. Cabin had electricity, mini fridge, electricity and bunk beds. Only complaint was cabin was close to fairly busy road.

    Highbank Lake Campground

Quiet and Quaint with great views.

Spent a few nights here with some friends over the weekend, but the funny thing is we ended up here on accident.  Got in late around 9:30 at night, but was able to find the last camp site.  The sites are small but are all equipped with several spots for tents.  It also includes a parking spot (obviously), a fire pit and a few stairs to either your parking spot or the road that connects all the sites.  There is a bathroom on site, but it was definitely stinkier than some of the other spots I've been to.  Water spigot available.  A great lake view for most of the sites; ours we could see through the trees from afar.

Pretty easy access to and from the site.  City of Baldwin is close by and they have several places to shop for souvenirs, groceries, alcohol, firewood, flowers, jewelry, meats, fish, etc - Baldwin even has a cannabis dispensary - The Green Door.

One of the campsites close to the lake was flooded as the lake must have risen over the past several months.

Fee is now $20 a night, not $18 like some websites might suggest.

I will absolutely return again soon.

North Higgins Lake State Park Campground

    Nice overnite stay

We stayed for a quick overnight and wish we could have stayed longer. If we stayed again - we’d pick site 101. Little more privacy than the rest. We stayed at 137 which backed up to the woods which was lovely. This is a very bustling and full campground with lots of groups and families. Lot’s of kids on bikes. We were surprised to see a group with a full bar right out front on their site. We’re used to Texas parks where that would NOT fly😆 But everyone respected the quiet hours so we had no noise issues at night. Easy access to the water from everywhere thanks to groomed paths. Nice long but narrow sandy beach great for the kids to swim. Busy but very fun place to camp!

    Not fancy, but nice

Really nice little campground. Not fancy, but clean and well kept. Pool and petting zoo for the kids. Small store with ice, few necessities and ice cream. Pond in the back on the small river for fishing. Quite a few seasonal campers. Anywhere from rustic to full hook up. Pet friendly. All gravel/dirt/grass sites. Most have trees. Fire pits quite small. Bathrooms very nice and updated.

    Traverse City KOA

    Great family campground!!

This KOA is just south of Traverse City and very centrally located to all that makes this area so awesome! Wineries, Sleep Bear Dunes, golf courses, and of course downtown Traverse City. This campground is very well laid out and easy to maneuver any size rig. The front part of the campground is very well shaded, however, many sites are only a few feet away from M37, which can get noisy from the traffic. The back half of the campground is a little more open, but most sites are still partially shaded. The owners and staff are very friendly and accommodating. Fire wood and ice are available and they will deliver right to your site. As the caption says, great family campground. If you have kids, this is the place for you! With that being said, here is why I gave a four star rating.....we were asked promptly at 10pm to turn our music off, which wasn’t loud at all. Beyond our campsite it could not be heard at all. They have what they call a strict 10pm-8am quiet hours. At 7am there were at least 8-10 kids riding bikes and scooters all over the campground and nothing was said. I appreciate a them having policies and creating a place for families to make memories, but please enforce those policies for everyone. Oh, and one last thing....they are very pet friendly! I have never seen a campground with so many dogs! Ours had a blast!

Guide to Evart

Camping options near Evart, Michigan range from rustic forest sites to waterfront campgrounds with convenient amenities. The region sits amid Michigan's Huron-Manistee National Forests, where the Muskegon River flows through pine and hardwood forests. Summer temperatures average 75-85°F during peak camping season, with humidity levels making water activities particularly refreshing.

What to do

Disc golf adventures: Newaygo State Park Campground features an impressive disc golf course that draws enthusiasts. "There's good hiking, an awesome disc golf course, and the lake right there with boat launches for fishing," reports Ryan L., who appreciates these recreational combinations.

Horseback riding options: While CranHill offers pony and trail rides, other campgrounds provide different equestrian experiences. At Hungerford Lake Campground, "There are horse staging areas and hiking trails. The lake is nice, small enough for a kayak/no motor boat," notes Arron P., highlighting the peaceful setting.

Water recreation access: Hardy Pond at Brower Park Campground offers extensive boating opportunities. "If you own a boat this campground is for you. It is very busy but if you decide to being kids, there are playgrounds and a craft barn. Alot of seasonal campers but alot of slips for visitor boats," explains Jami M.

Mountain biking trails: The Dragon Trail accessible from Brower Park provides excellent biking terrain. "The park is right next to the Dragon Trail, a hiking and mountain biking trail that runs 47 miles round Hardy Pond. There is a short loop called the Brower Park Loop that has amazing views," shares Joshua E.

What campers like

Clean facilities: School Section Lake Veteran's Park maintains well-kept amenities despite its rustic setting. "Small lake with clean shallow beach, wooded sites, clean (but slightly dated) facilities led to fun times with grandkids," says Russell S., who appreciated the family-friendly environment.

Spacious campsites: Newaygo State Park Campground offers generous site dimensions compared to many area campgrounds. "The thing we love most about this campground is the spacious site and that it is truly rustic with vault toilets and hand pumped water," explains Sarah K., a longtime visitor.

Quiet atmosphere: At Camp Cadillac, visitors find tranquility despite being near town. "Quiet little campground. Not fancy, but clean and well kept. Pool and petting zoo for the kids. Small store with ice, few necessities and ice cream. Pond in the back on the small river for fishing," describes Stacey R.

Reasonable rates: Veterans Memorial Park in Marion offers affordable glamping near Evart with basic amenities. "I tent camped there July 2023 and the site was $20. The campground host was a very nice and helpful lady. There are electric at the sites and there were water supply spigets throughout the park," reports David M.

What you should know

Site sizes vary significantly: Many campgrounds have limitations on RV length or maneuverability. At Shelley Lake Campground, "The lack of signs and less well kept nature left us feeling a little less than comfortable here," notes Art S., adding, "It would probably be difficult to park a large camper in any of these spots."

Road noise considerations: Some campgrounds experience traffic noise that can affect the experience. Wilson State Park Campground sits "in the middle of the town on a main highway the noise was horrible," warns Tracy A., though others find the location convenient.

Weather preparedness: The region can experience sudden weather changes, particularly affecting lower-lying campsites. "One spot in the corner, the very Northeast corner camp spot, is low, and flood prone during rain," warns Dj W. about Wilson State Park Campground.

Reservation recommendations: Many campgrounds fill quickly during summer months. "Rez was easy online. Not many campers this weekend," mentions Michelle P. about Newaygo State Park's Poplar campground, highlighting the benefit of early booking.

Tips for camping with families

Beach selection: School Section Lake Veteran's Park offers family-friendly swimming. "Very nice camp with an awesome lake and great swimming area! Kids love this park! Sometimes it gets busy. The shop has snacks and ice cream," shares Arron P.

Organized activities: Several campgrounds provide structured entertainment for children. "Kids are riding their bikes all over, fishing, playing at playgrounds, the beach, everywhere. Everyone was very friendly," Amanda L. says about Brower Park Campground.

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds feature play areas for children of various ages. "This campground is on the beautiful muskegon river, it has a large swimming area, nice sandy beach along the swimming area, play grounds, everything is clean and well kept," reports Bethany S. about Brower Park.

Educational opportunities: Some locations offer learning activities for children. "There is a trail head with a gorgeous trail along a smaller stream and an art barn with activities for kids to create each day," notes Bethany S., highlighting Brower Park's creative options.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Cadillac Woods Campground requires careful planning for larger RVs. "While you can book online, I would call the office and talk to the owners because not all sites are easy to maneuver a camper into and may not be a good choice for your size camper," advises Erika W.

Hookup availability: Most glamping options near Evart offer various levels of hookups. At Camp Cadillac, guests find "Anywhere from rustic to full hook up. Pet friendly. All gravel/dirt/grass sites. Most have trees. Fire pits quite small. Bathrooms very nice and updated," according to Stacey R.

Site leveling challenges: Terrain varies significantly between campgrounds. "Yes, some spots are smaller than others, so be honest about your rig length when booking. Many sites are rather large, like 97, but severely sloped, also like 97," warns Dj W. about Wilson State Park Campground.

Site surface considerations: Different campgrounds offer varied parking surfaces. "My site was a back in with not a lot of maneuvering room but even though some may feel these sites are small, we had plenty of space, very good water, and full hook up. I wish we had gravel verses dirt though, during the rain it gets a bit muddy," shares Russell S. about School Section Lake.
