Within Michigan's St. Mary's River, Lime Island State Recreation Area occupies a unique position between the United States and Canada at the eastern tip of the Upper Peninsula. This state-managed campground requires boat access only, as no ferry service operates to the island. Ten tent sites sit on wooden platforms overlooking the river, with basic amenities including portable toilets and a hand pump for well water.
The island runs on limited solar electricity and lacks running water. Campers must bring all gear including sleeping and cooking supplies. Large Great Lakes freighters pass close to the island throughout the day and night. Seven miles of hiking trails cross the island, where remnants of early 20th-century industrial equipment from the former ship refueling depot remain visible. Motorized boats are recommended due to heavy commercial traffic and choppy water conditions in the shipping channel.
