Very well maintained trails. Lighthouse was beautiful - easy to get to, walk a little longer from the parking lot than we expected. Some trails shortened due to storm damage (?) - so be sure to use the map provided at the gate with updates. Allowed to drive around and pick campsite since we arrived same day.
Went camping for the first time in for ever
Finished the season at this state park in MD with full hook up (20, 30, and 50 amp, water and sewer) and the water was still on in November. Bathhouses were open with hot water. Nice clean bathhouses. Sites were level, spacious, spaced apart, with packed gravel surface. Back in and pull through sites available. Near the state forest with a rifle, archery, and handgun ranges including skeet shooting. In summer there is a beach on the North East River for swimming and the Turkey Point Lighthouse is nearby. The town of North East is close and is a quaint town with a Main Street and great little shops. Woodys famous crab house is there along with other restaurants. Turkey Point Vineyard is nearby. There are views of the Elk River from many sites. Stayed in the North East loop and there are mini cabins available as well.
I went to Elk Neck at the end of September. This place was super clean, really nice sites, and the trails were awesome. I would absolutely go back. I only gave it 4 stars because I was only there for 2 days and wasn’t able to experience everything.
This campground is very family friendly. We saw so many children running around having a great time! They have fairly many camp sites with an amazing view. Unfortunately we did not reserve our site in time to get one of the better ones. We still could see the water but not right water front. We enjoyed hiking the Beaver Marsh Trail. From our campsite we had to drive to a trail head but there were a few sights that had direct access. Also the lighthouse trail is a must. It is about a five minute drive to get to the trail though, but is worth it! The camp host were very friendly and were actually in charge of keeping the bathrooms clean (which they did excellent at)! The bathrooms were nothing fancy but I was impressed with the cleanness. I would definitely recommend giving this campground a try!
Rv sites are huge and private, not on top of one another. Beach, boat ramp, hike to the lighthouse with incredible views of the 2 rivers and bay. If you boat and camp, it's perfect. Nature center, great store, clean, well maintained and staffed for a state park. Nice beach. So much to do. They do have a no alcohol policy unless you are inside a cabin or RV, but unless you get stupid, no one bothers you. Can't wait to go back.
Good campground, has a couple residents that keep watch. Can get a little crowded on weekends. Each has a fire pit, and there is a store on site that sells general campground supplies (fire starter, hot dogs, band aids). Has a great walking trail to an awesome lighthouse that overlooks the Chesapeake Bay.
Really enjoyed this campground. Quiet; campsites weren’t on top of each other; had your own space. Hot water was out while we were there so showers were a bit cold but it’s summer/hot so it wasn’t really a problem. Lots of things to do near by and so close to the water.
Well maintained
Nice hiking & fishing areas around with gorges views
Not recommend for big loud groups.
Site was well maintained and very clean. Bathrooms were clean with showers and wash stations. Great views of the bay and beaches. Very well stocked camp store.
We saw bald eagles and great blue heron.
Only minor drawbacks being; the pad for pitching tents seemed to have poured concrete a few inches down, making it tough to stake anything down. RV sites mixed in with tents so the sound of generators was pretty constant, but it was a scorching weekend, so might not be so bad in cooler days.
Great campsites and trails!
Nice state park. Tons of campsites. One loop has full hookups. Careful of choosing a site if you have a big rig. The loop has tight turns and some seriously non level sites. Trails are nice and well marked. The pond loop has some amazingly old growth mountain laurels and patches of ghost flowers. The Turkey Point lighthouse hike is popular go early or late to avoid waiting for a parking spot on nice weekends. Swimming and boating on the river are popular activities too.
This was definitely a state park that was worth the trip. We stayed in the elk loop spot 142. It is the only one with electric in that part of the park so we were the only RV. All the loops we visited were quiet, well maintained and offered nice shade. Quite a few spots also offer water views. There are a bunch of nice, well marked trails throughout. Camp hosts were not out and about but were friendly and park rangers stopped by from time to time to make sure everyone was parked according to the rules. Overall a very nice experience, several spots to put in kayaks or paddle boards. Clean bathhouse. Playground for the kids. Will be back.
Spent one night here at the State Park. My boyfriend and I traveled from northeast PA, about three hours away, and arrived earlier to the park than the check-in time (3pm). However the ranger was able to check us in as no one had used our site the night before. The ranger was polite and gave us maps of the campground as well as hiking/biking trails, of which there are a few. The park itself is sectioned into loops, we stayed at a loop close to the river, the sites on the river were booked but we were still able to get past the sites and get a view of the river. We hiked/biked to turkey point lighthouse, which is not actually accessible from the campground. Just a short drive past a community is the trail which was fun to bike but still well maintained. Overall would definitely stay again it was peaceful and quiet.
Beautiful camping at the head of the Chesapeake Bay! Lots of trails and waterways for exploring!!
Great view of the bay!
Elk Neck had some of the cleanest bathrooms I've ever used, and the camp sites were a good size. I didn't feel like anyone was on top of me which was nice. Pretty quiet too, which is always a plus
We went camping over Memorial Day weekend with our friends. Our sites were a decent distance apart but most other sites were closer. Good bathrooms and showers and plenty of hiking trails. Our 2.5 year old was able to hike most of the Turkey Point Lighthouse trail on his own. Definitely take the trail through the woods for one leg of the hike, either to the lighthouse or back.
This campground is excellent for anyone that newer to camping or want to experience some slight glamping. You can reserve your site online and get full details on its location. The campgrounds themselves are very easy to navigate and maps are provided at the ranger station to make it easier. There is also a store near the entrance of the park that has everything you might have forgotten or never know you needed, including incredible and eco-friendly fire starters. The facilities are very clean and get the job done. Overall, I had a great time camping and hiking here and would definitely visit again!
I just went with my family of 4 and we had a great time. We stayed in the Wye loop (tents only - no electricity), which had single sites with enough room for up to 6 people. The sites are kinda close together, but everyone was quiet at night so it wasn't a problem. My kids (ages 8 and 6) made friends with kids at other sites and they enjoyed running around playing together.
The playground in this loop is not much - just swings and one metal semi-circle they can climb on. Although there is a much nicer playground near the camp store. The fire wood we purchased from the camp store was wet and we had a hard time getting it to burn.
The bathrooms and showers were nice, clean, and always stocked with toilet paper. We did not have an outdoor sink for washing dishes, so I used the spigot that many people used to fill up their water jugs (note for next time - bring jugs to fill at the water spout!). The camp host informed me they are slowly adding them, and the Chester and Sassafras loops have one so far.
There was plenty to do during the day at the park. We "hiked" (really, just walked) to the Turkey Point lighthouse and went to the swimming beach. The water had seaweed and sticks floating in it, and rocks along the bottom (I'd recommend swimming shoes, although lots of kids didn't seem to mind the rocks on their bare feet), but my kids enjoyed making a sand castle on the beach.
Overall, this was a great trip and we would go back.
Campsites on the Choptank, Miles, Elk loop bring you right next to the water. Gorgeous view, and only a few minute hike over to stony point. There's a sandy beach there that provides a relaxing environment to kick back.
This is a beautiful wooded campground with sites that have water and electric some are primitive. There are areas for motorhome and trailers and tenting areas. Many different areas to camp. Bath houses at various locations. There are also playground areas. Many, many trails to hike and ranger programs to attend. Also an area for large groups. Camp store is opened seasonally. There is access to the Elk River. Paved roads throughout.
Came here for the day to enjoy the beach, check out the campgrounds, and scout for a potential family reunion location. The beach area was beautiful, and not nearly as crowded as other MD State Park swimming beaches, even on a weekend. Was also nice to be on the actual bay, as opposed to a man-made lake. The water was pretty calm, and felt very refreshing, but was full of seaweed. The bottom was also quite pebbly, so I'd recommend water shoes. Nice playground and picnic shelter. We drove through a few of the camping loops, and they looked very nice and well-maintained. There is also a beautiful (and popular!) lighthouse accessible by foot, but the parking lot at the trailhead often fills to capacity, so get there early! That was the case with us, so we were turned away. Nevertheless, we had a great time, and were all set to host the reunion here, but then learned that they were planning some major renovations to the picnic shelters and a few camping loops in the months leading up to our event. We hope to return next year to camp, once said renovations have been completed!
My family went here every year for vacation when I was growing up. I have continued the tradition with my children and hope when the time comes they will with their own.
Went out to Elk Neck State Park with my mom for the day. We had a pretty good time checking out the lighthouse and walking along the shore finding shells.
We came here for some day hiking (and geocaching) with our little ones, and we're not disappointed. Trails were clearly marked, and not too rough for our 2 year old. Then, after hiking we spent a little bit of time at the beach. Views were nice out onto the Chesapeake bay. Store personnel were very helpful in letting us know what was available. The camp store had a decent selection of staples, as well as some bird watching books. Overall good experience.
This was probably my least favorite camping experience. The sites are very close together, there were kids playing in the bathroom constantly, the "lake" was gross and too small for the amount of people swimming. There was little access to trails for natural areas for fishing or just viewing. Our entire group came back with Chiggers as well. Would not recommend.
