Lake D'Arbonne State Park — New Lake D'arbonne State Park

Beautiful state park with something for everyone

This lakeside state park has RV and tent camping, cabins, lodges and YURTS available. There are also day use pavilions available for family reunions, employee barbecues or birthday celebrations. You can also rent a meeting room in the visitors center.

There are lots of recreational opportunities which include hiking, biking, fishing, canoe and kayak rentals, tennis courts and an 18-hole disc golf course. They also have a large hiking trail system. Closed right now but available Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend they also have a really large swimming pool. A tornado hit the park in March 2021 and there’s still some trees down and a brief section of the trail I walked on today that wasn’t accessible but it is an easy detour amazing how much they have restored.

    Jimmie Davis State Park Campground

Prettiest La. State Park (so far)

Jimmie Davis State Park is wonderful, well maintained, and has a number of amenities.  Prettiest La. State Park I've stayed in so far. We had a great stay the days before Thanksgiving, and the weather was awesome. The fall leaf colors were spectacular. Caney Lake is clean and beautiful. I enjoyed walking and sitting along the lake in the mornings. Bathrooms were clean.

Stayed in campsite#52. Back-in site with asphalt parking, picnic table and fire ring. 15A/30A/50A, and water. No deck, sewer, Wi-Fi, and cable TV hookups. It has a large area on door/awning side. Awning faced west but the trees provided ample shade from the evening sun shining underneath. The spot is well spaced from other sites. The site is located near the lake. I wish the site had a paved patio or deck like site 51 and 54 on either side. Nearest neighbor was at least 30-40 ft. Away. Roads in the park were asphalt/concrete/gravel.

Both AT&T and Verizon had low signal(2 bars each). AT&T Speedtest= 16.8 Mbps down, 1.4 Mbps up. We camped in a Travel Trailer. Would definitely stay here again. We camped at Jimmie Davis State Park in a Travel Trailer.

    Lake Bistineau State Park Campground

    Beautiful state park

Lake Bistineau is a great state park park near Shreveport, LA. We stayed 2 nights. The sites are very shady. The park streets and sites are asphalt. Some roads need repaving. The park was clean and quiet, and the staff was friendly. Unfortunately, the lake was drawn down to eradicate an invasive water plant. But, this presented a unique opportunity. We could walk on the dry lake bottom and see the parts of cypress trees that are normally under water.

Stayed in back-in campsite#14 which was level side to side, but the front was higher. The site has a nice view of the lake and a large wooden deck. There was just enough parking for my 34 ft TT and truck. Neighbors are nearby, but not too close. The site included: picnic table on concrete, BBQ pit, trash pole, and fire ring. Utilities: 20/30/50A electric in back. Water in back, good pressure. No sewer, but a dump station is available.

AT&T had 2 bars of LTE and Verizon 2 bars of LTE service. AT&T Speedtest: 5.1 Mbps down, 0.7 Mbps up. Verizon Speedtest: 7.4 Mbps down, 0.1 Mbps up. No WiFi.

Would stay here again. We camped at Lake Bistineau State Park in a Travel Trailer.

    Chemin-A-Haut State Park

Amazing state park, sadly underfunded. Still worth a trip.

Pretty state park, swimming pool during summer, gorgeous trails on an enchanting bayou, wooded back in slots with a camp host, not much to do in Bastrop but this park is a great attraction. No sewage but there is a dump station. There is also tent camping, cabins, and equestrian camping and trails but there have been budget cuts that prevent horse trail maintenance and road repairs, so you don’t know what you’ll get sometimes. The park has playgrounds and pavilions.

    Lake Bistineau State Park Campground

    Classic southern cypress setting

A taste of the swamps in north Louisiana. Spanish moss clad Bald Cypress trees in a stereotypical Louisiana lake. Two great boat ramps, cabins and picnic tables. Keep your small dogs on a leash or you may feed the gators. Mosquitoes big enough to land at Barksdale AFB.

    Great place to camp!!

We don’t have one complaint about our stay. The camp ground is very clean and in good shape. The pads are all asphalted so pretty level. Trash bins are at every other site and the bathroom is not a far walk. The temps are really hot but the bugs aren’t too bad. My family will be back!!

    Lake Bistineau State Park Campground

    Nice enough

We stayed here for a one night stopover. I’m not sure I’d go out of my way to stay there again but I was happy enough with my stop. It’s an older park. The lake is pretty swampy. No sewer at the sites, but water and electric. Cell service with AT&T was pretty weak but manageable to get some work done. Bathhouse was a typical older state park set up. Definitely needs some TLC. It would take a little work to get level in most of the sites from what I can see. They do have a wooden platform (almost like a deck) at most sites that is pretty cool. Our table was old and kinda warped. There is a fire pit. Table and fire are down a level but sites where we stayed were large and spacious. The park was almost empty during our stay but when we booked there were very few open sites available less than a week earlier. That seemed odd once we saw there was literally no one staying there. Sunset was beautiful.

Guide to Bernice

Cabin camping near Bernice, Louisiana offers access to cypress-lined shorelines across multiple lakes including Lake D'Arbonne, Lake Claiborne, and Caney Lake. North Louisiana's elevation averages 70-80 feet above sea level, creating rolling landscapes that contrast with the flatter southern regions. The area experiences hot, humid summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and mild winters where nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing.

What to do

Fishing from private piers: Lake Claiborne State Park cabins provide excellent fishing access with some sites featuring dedicated piers. "Whitetail deer, owls, fish/gar, butterflies, dragonflies, fireflies, and much more! Sites right on the Lake," reports Penny A. about Lake Claiborne State Park.

Kayaking ancient waterways: Paddle among centuries-old cypress trees at Chemin-A-Haut State Park. "Best feature in the park is the Chemin-A-Haut Creek were 1000 year old Cypress trees are scattered throughout. Rent a kayak or canoe to paddle to them," notes Nicki M. about Chemin-A-Haut State Park.

Hiking woodland trails: Lake D'Arbonne offers several hiking trails through pine forests with lake views. "Nice hilly trails for hiking, huge/nice pool, nice cabins, fishing piers, plenty of tent and RV spots. I've never seen it overly crowded," shares Zack M. about Lake D'Arbonne.

Disc golf courses: Multiple courses available for disc golf enthusiasts at Lake Claiborne. "Two Disc Golf Courses and hiking trails. Nice facilities with all lodging options from primitive tent, yurt, RV hookups, and cabins," mentions Penny A.

What campers like

Clean, modern bathroom facilities: Many cabins have their own facilities, but campground bathhouses are well-maintained. "Bath houses are new, clean and climate controlled. Plenty of sites to choose from when I stayed though all of the waterfront sites were taken," notes Jason W. about Lake Claiborne State Park.

Waterfront access: Several cabins offer direct lake access for fishing or water activities. "Kels Kove is a hidden Gem, beautiful property alongside the lake. Very Friendly Staff and the property looks well taken care of," says Mark H. about Kels Kove.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The lakes and surrounding forests host diverse wildlife. "Secluded in the North Louisiana Farms, on Lake D'arbonne, with large forest trails. Immense campground with back to forest or lake front and all have RV hookup," describes Timothy H.

Peaceful, uncrowded settings: Many campers note the relaxing atmosphere, particularly during weekdays. "Lake Darbonne is our first experience with camping. I really didn't know what to expect but we really loved it: the staff is really helpful, the campsite is really cosy (and not crowded during week days), the view on the lake is beautiful," shares Gil C.

What you should know

Wi-Fi and cell service limitations: Connectivity varies significantly between parks. "Wi-Fi did not work anywhere in park (signal broadcasted fine just no connection to internet) AT&T is non existent," warns Brent C. about Lake Claiborne.

Seasonal water level changes: Lake water levels can affect activities and access. "We tent camp here in early Spring in the camping area #2 and comeback weekend after weekend. Many wonderfully marked hiking trails, two of the best frisbe golf courses in Louisiana," mentions Sarah B. about Lake Claiborne.

Reservation requirements: Plan ahead, especially for waterfront cabin sites. "Very nice campground, great area for kids. Campsite was right on the lake and had a gorgeous sunset. Bathrooms werent the greatest but still good," notes Sam B.

Wildlife preparedness: Local wildlife can be curious around cabins. "Raccoons are very curious and obviously human fed because they will walk right up to you," cautions Nicki M. about Jimmie Davis State Park.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several parks feature modern playgrounds near cabin areas. "The park is beautiful, especially right now with a the changing colors of the trees. The locals and park rangers are also very nice," shares Alayna J. about Lake D'Arbonne.

Ranger assistance: Park rangers provide helpful services beyond safety. "I locked my keys in my car and the park ranger helped me get ahold to a person to unlock it. He also gave us some camping tips and helped us build a fire and gather firewood," adds Alayna J.

Water activities for kids: Swimming areas and boat rentals provide family entertainment. "There's a nice little beach where the kids can play and a playground area as well. The bathrooms are clean and warm (welcome in the winter and spring)," notes Sarah B. about Lake Bistineau State Park.

Multi-generational accommodation: Cabins work well for family gatherings with varied needs. "Kels Kove has a country store with Beer, Alcohol, and all other essentials. ATT works best, Verizon and Tmobie are spotty reception. The lake is Big, try and get out on the water when visiting!" advises Mark H.

Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: Some sites require significant leveling blocks. "Very pretty camping area. We stayed here at site 14. Had a long pier over the water, and plenty of space between campers. Not level ground, but we managed with enough blocks to get it level," reports Cat R.

Full hookup availability: Not all parks offer sewer hookups at cabin or RV sites. "Great park, lots to do and see the sites for Campers have decks!! No sewer though!" notes Aleia B. about Lake Bistineau.

Site selection tips: Research specific site numbers when booking. "Just have to be careful what sight you book, because I almost never got my camper level in sight #21. All in all, I would make a return trip," advises Gary G. about Chemin-A-Haut State Park.

Laundry facilities: Some parks provide laundry options for extended stays. "Lots of amenities. Tennis courses, disc golf course, hiking/biking trails, swimming pool, cabins, lodges, several playgrounds, picnic areas, pavilions & WiFi. Very reasonable sites for $23/night unless you're in the lakeside premium sites which are more," shares Cheri H.
