Lovely view, isolated spot

I came from route 17 and camped 2.1 miles farther down the road than the gps coordinates here. I saw some nice forested sites along the way. Beyond my location got VERY rocky, like, larger rocks sticking up all over the place, and I’m traveling alone, so I stopped here. I have a Subaru Forester. If I had more intense tires I would have gone just a little bit farther and you get some truly beautiful spots. (It seems like you get some of the nicer views on the drive if you come up from Sedona but I don’t know how the road is.) But it was a quick walk away to see the sunrise. Quiet and peaceful, my closest neighbors that I know of were over a mile away.

Clean, convenient, easy

Stayed here while barreling across Oklahoma, tent camping. I was able to reserve the last walk in site (Saturday of 4th of July weekend) around 8pm. You can reserve online thru recreation.gov. All sites are for RV or tent, and there was only one other tent camper. There’s not a lot of privacy (which is the only reason I knocked a star) but it’s right on Kaw lake, is clean and all maintained, and even has showers.

Great, quiet, woodsy free camping

Beautiful, secluded spot in the woods with level campsites, fire rings, parking area for your car, and picnic tables (in some disrepair.) No amenities other than toilets and water pumps.

Great place to stay!

Great campsite $15/night. About 1/3 reservation and 2/3 first come first served. It is a site that attracts hikers especially, as it is adjacent to the Appalachian trail. Bear boxes are at each site too, which is very convenient especially at a walk in site!

If you can, get site #20. It is the BEST sunset watching spot. You can also watch from the Appalachian trail below that site.

Showers are coin operated, $1.75 and nicely renovated. Laundry is available too. Poor cell service in most sites, best reception is at the amphitheater.
