      Lake Cumberland State Resort Park

      Wonderful state park

This is a larger state park that includes a restaurant, golf course, pool, etc. but also some nice trails to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The Cumberland State Scenic Trail is the local long trail, which can be access from the park. This park is close to town, the highway, and some other natural areas. The campground includes a number of similar loops, all wooded, nice and modern with the typical state park amenities. Cabins are available too They also have a moderate backpacking trail that we didn’t try, but would be perfect for first-time backpackers (since you can shower and eat at a buffet afterwards).

Yay: kayak and boat rentals. Something for everyone. Love the bridge over the water.

Nay: parts can be a little crowded, a little expensive.

Surprise: the on site restaurant is quite fancy---we went to an elegant wedding here and stayed for camping. They have a weekend buffet with rather fancy food and great quality. Also check out nearby Rock Island State Park for surreal waterfall swimming.

      Lake Shelby Campground

Site #11 good tent spot, too far from restrooms

Site #11: nice shade tree, lots of roots exposed, set up tent on stone to avoid roots. Great space between the tent sites, but virtually no real privacy as public traffic into park was steady. awesome wildlife for a park within the city: herons, geese (except for poop), ducks, turtles, beavers. We didn't see the coons but put food away every night as they visited our camp on a nightly basis.

Long way to a newer bath house, port-a-john almost as far away in opposite direction. RV spots were really tight. Shelter with electrical outlet attached to bathhouse. Indoor and outdoor pool in the other half of the park. Kayak rental available. Host friendly and helpful. Bathhouse is four units, each with sink, toilet and shower. Could have been a lot cleaner. In our five day stay, no deep clean, but always had TP. Overall, enjoyed our stay, appreciated our Luggable Loo as a backup.

Nice area, County Fair while we were there, historic downtown. Several grocery stores, thrift stores and boutiques. Renaissance festival nearby.

      Lake Shelby Campground

Not the worst place, but close...

First, the good: Lake Shelby was easy to find. The signs were easy to see and tent sites are well marked. The office, RV area and restrooms were easy to find and also well marked. The tent sites were shaded by nice trees and were located right next to the lake. The group tent sites looked nice and had shade and open areas. You can rent a paddle boat or canoe. However, there has to be an adult in the canoe for rental. There are several docks and a boat ramp. You have to pay to launch and there is an honor box for that. The campsite itself, was mostly flat and partially shaded. The fire pit was nice as well. Now, the bad: The lake was brown and had an oily film across the top. It smelled of dead fish and something else that I couldn't identify. I saw people fishing, but I never saw anyone actually catch anything. The tent sites were down a dead end road, however the amount of cars that went past our site made me feel like there was a parade that lasted almost the entire time we were there. The paddle boat lost steering when we were halfway around the lake. The only thing we could do was go in a circle. It took 20 minutes for them to send someone to assist us. There was a trash can next to our site, however, it was nearly full when we arrived and no one ever emptied it. The restrooms are located at the RV parking area, so we had to drive to use them. In my opinion, the restrooms should have been built in between the RV sites and tent sites to make them easier to access by walking. Overall, I didn't hate my time at Lake Shelby, but there was nothing great enough to make me return or recommend it to friends.

Fall Creek Campground — Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)

      beautiful views

I have been going to this campground my entire life. It has 10 sites that are spread out on kind of a peninsula sticking out in the lake. It is up on a hill,so the walk to lake is a hefty one from some of the sites. The sites are level and spacious, also they feel secluded. The ramp is a steep grade as are most of the ramps at this lake. The showers and bathrooms are clean and updated. There is a dump station on site. There is a playground and plenty of walking to do. The sites have electric and I think water on each site. The hosts were wonderful. It is out in the middle of nowhere, but worth it. We drove out and bought ice and vegetables on the honor system at a little stand. There are stores to restock supplies not too far away and it is about 20 minutes to Conley Bottom Marina which has a restaurant and general store. We love this place and will definitely go back.

      Lake Cumberland State Resort Park

      Nice facilities! Awesome restaurant!

We tent camped in August. The campground area was huge and perfect for tent camping or an RV. We were next to the restroom building which also served as a storm shelter. The restrooms were air conditioned and very clean! The only negative thing I have to say about the site is the fire ring needed to be cleaned out. The Rowena Landing restaurant had a good buffet and excellent catfish! The pool was closed for repairs and that was disappointing. The country store was very close and offered a small selection of foods, but most everything you would need for your campsite. The mini golf was fun, but there was a little flooding on the course due to a crazy storm the day before. Everyone was very nice and this felt like a safe place to be. The lake was crazy beautiful and worth going out on to see.

      Pulaski County Park

      Good camp ground

My family and I have camped here most of my life. There has been lots of improvements to the camp ground. There is also several shelters you can rent for different events. There are hiking trails near the entrance of the camp. There is several different types of camp areas ranging from primitive to cabins. There are several play ground areas close by for the kids to play. You can bring your boats along and put them in right there they have 2 different ramps on either side of the camp ground. The only thing I would add is another bath house at the lower end of the camp areas. Something for everyone.

      Lake Cumberland State Resort Park

      Decent at best

15 mph speed limit and above average traffic through campground. No speedbumps so folks fly. Very dangerous. Lots of kids riding bikes but folks still drive too fast. Take an extra power cord. Electric and water are laid out poorly and we had to purchase an extra cord. There were a few really nice spots with decks built but not the best layout for campers. Small sites if you have large camper. Plenty of trees so it was comfortable camping. Bath houses were clean and easy to get to from any site. Very friendly staff. Firewood purchased from them wasn't any good. Some was green and some was rotten. Put-Put golf near campground was fun and affordable. They also have 1 50 amp cord and 1 30 amp cord at the store you can borrow if you get there quick enough.

    What campers like

Quiet camping settings: Campers appreciate the peaceful atmosphere at many cabin locations. "It seemed a bit pricey for full hook-up but was very nice. The campground was very clean and well maintained," writes Fred T. about Renfro Valley KOA.

Waterfront views: Cabins with water access rank highly among visitors. "Camped here with our pop up on 4/5/19. Pads are small in length so be aware of that when it mentions it on the website," shares Martin M. about Lake Shelby Campground. "The campground sits right next to the lake and dam and you can fish both in the lake and on the stream below the dam."

Natural surroundings: Fall Creek Campground receives praise for its natural setting. "It has 10 sites that are spread out on kind of a peninsula sticking out in the lake...The sites are level and spacious, also they feel secluded," writes Karen P.

    What you should know

Steep access points: Multiple cabin campgrounds feature challenging entry roads. "Entrance and exit are a bit steep, just take it slow," advises Tiana K. about Renfro Valley KOA.

Seasonal limitations: Winter visitors should research carefully. "We rented a cabin during the off-season and our cabin was cute - very old fashioned. What we found out quickly was that everything was pretty much closed, including the main lodge restaurant," explains Angela C. about Lake Cumberland.

Site characteristics: Holmes Bend offers various campsite options. "Not the cleanest and privacy could be better in certain areas and you really have to drive out to get to anything like lake activity and fishing," reports Nikki B. Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Look for cabins with dedicated play areas. "Kids enjoyed the pool, Gaga ball, playground, jumping pillow, and passport activities," shares Tiana K. about her family's stay at Renfro Valley KOA.

Learning opportunities: Many cabin locations include farm animals and educational elements. "There are ducks and chickens around, and the eggs are always available. There's also a few super friendly dogs to visit," writes Cassandra C. about HomeGrown HideAways.

Weather planning: Early spring and late fall cabin stays require preparation. "If it were totally full it would be tight between many spaces. Overall nice campground, good location, could drive 30-45 for things to do," notes Bethany W. after a Labor Day weekend at Renfro Valley KOA.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: RVers should carefully research site dimensions before booking cabin alternatives. "I have a 33-foot trailer and sites 22-25 are on a hill. I could not pull through the site because of hill. Could not level trailer because when I got it level, stairs and front stabilizers would not reach the ground," shares Brian about Renfro Valley KOA.

Electrical connection planning: Many cabin sites have irregularly positioned hookups. "Take an extra power cord. Electric and water are laid out poorly and we had to purchase an extra cord," advises Travis S. about Lake Cumberland.

Off-season maintenance issues: Fall and winter RV campers report varying experiences with facility upkeep. "The office never seemed to be open. We needed propane upon leaving but couldn't find anyone. Sites are small, not level and in need of some upkeep," notes Douglas T. about his November visit to Renfro Valley KOA.
