    Paintsville Lake State Park Campground

Nice lake, rec area and campground all nestled together

Spent the night here passing through. I did make a reservation just in case but there were a couple sites open. Nice, small campground, most sites are back in but there are a few pull through sites. The staff were friendly and the campground seems maintained fairly well. No wifi and Verizon is touchy. Out in the recreation area I had one bar and LTE though the data seemed pretty good. My site was right at the beginning of the campground. Inside my camper I could only get a signal if I put my phone in the window. The signal was good enough to stream and FaceTime but if I took it out of the window I’d lose signal.

The sites are nice and not on top of each other. They are a nice finer type gravel and mostly level. Big patio area with a picnic table and fire pit. Some of the sites at the front will give you a decent view of the lake, site 18 being the best I believe, I was in site 20.

It’s open year round according to the website. Not sure how big rig friendly it is and I couldn’t find any information on the website, I’d call first. I don’t recall seeing any 5th wheel or motor homes back there.

Overall, very nice campground and I would visit again. There is an 1850’s mountain house in the park just prior to the entrance to the campground/recreation area. There is a fee and you’ll have to check the hours. I forgot to take a picture but the song on the gift shop door said certain days by appointment only and I think Friday thru Sunday they were open for a period of time.

Middle Fork Campground — Natural Bridge State Resort Park

Middle Fork - Natural Bridge SP

Just got back from a quick spring break trip to the Red River Gorge. We booked our site in Middle Fork back in January. We had site B024, pull through. Clean campground, nice staff. It is narrow getting down to the site and you can easily miss it as you take the curves of Rt11/Natural Bridge Rd. We have a 37' trailer that took the entire length of the pad. If you pull through with nose facing the river, ALL utilities are on the driver's side/left. 20-30-50 amp plus water hookup. Bring your H20 filter as the 💧 is slightly brown. Pad is asphalt, table and fire ring on small gravel. Bath house has 2 shower stalls, 3 commode, 2 sinks (guys side). There is NO internet/wifi as the the supply line to the campground was cut/damaged 2+ yrs ago. Also, you are in a valley. If wx is clear you might get 2 bars/4G service. My teenagers survived. All the amenities for the park are a short drive or an easy walk. Had a great experience all around. Check out the Gorge Underground and take the SkyLift for an easy climb to Natural Bridge.

The Perfect Getaway: The Farm RV Resort Review

If you’re looking for an idyllic spot to park your RV and unwind, The Farm RV Resort is an absolute gem. Nestled in a serene countryside setting, this resort offers the perfect blend of nature and comfort. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed by the friendly and helpful staff who made check-in a breeze. We particularly loved the well-kept grass areas and the full hook-ups, making it super convenient for extended stays. The resort has a rustic charm that makes you feel like you’re getting away from it all, yet it still provides modern amenities. One of the highlights of our stay was the peaceful atmosphere. The surrounding farm landscape, with its rolling fields and calm breeze, is perfect for those who enjoy the quiet outdoors. We spent our evenings watching sunsets, enjoying the fresh air, and even taking walks around the grounds. For those looking for activities, the resort offers a variety of fun options. There’s a cozy clubhouse with games and a small store for essentials, plus a community fire pit where guests can gather and share stories under the stars. We also enjoyed the nearby trails, perfect for hiking or biking. We left feeling refreshed, relaxed, and already planning our next visit!

    Buckhorn Dam Campground

Great Family Camground in the Mountains of E. KY

This has ranked #1 for campgrounds for our family this season.

Nestled in the mountains of eastern Kentucky, this campground has all the things your family could want to do in nature.

Check in was super easy and the staff was great.

The site was very easy to get to.

We were on site 13 and it was nearly perfectly level from left to right. It had both 30 and 50 amp hookups and water (about 35psi on pressure). Each site has a charcoal grill, a fire pit with a grate for cooking and a large picnic table.

Our site backed up to the creek and a nice little levee for fishing. You could also go up back the park and fish right at the spillway from Buckhorn Lake Dam. Really fun experience.

Hands down the best playground for kids we have seen in a campground.

They had a large bathhouse with super clean bathrooms. Unsure about showers as I use the one in my TT.

There were horseshoe pits in two locations in the campsite. Several locations to dispose of trash. They also provided trash bags upon arrival.

Laundry facilities onsite and firewood you could purchase.

The dump station was clean and easily accessible with a hose for flushing.

Erica and her husband are the hosts and were so friendly and helpful. We were there over Mother’s Day weekend and they provided coffee juice and doughnuts for Mother’s Day.

A ton of kiddos for kids to play with and a great area for their bikes, etc.

We 100% will be back to this campground this season.

    Twin Knobs Recreation Area

    Twin Knobs

This drive in camp site is a pay only and it’s best to call a couple weeks before your trip to reserve you spot! You can tent camp, pop up, or set up your pull behind. Twin Knobs is very clean and spacious campsites and most are on the water! This campground has basketball courts, a beach area, restrooms and more. Pet friendly but must stay on a leash.

Oh! Kentucky RV Park & Campground

    Great campsite

Great campground in Berea KY. Easy to get to, just off I75 at route 21. The sites were spacious and well cared for, and all are pull through. Picnic table and fire pit at each site. Some sites were shaded by trees, others were open. All sites had water, power and sewer. Onsite propane and small store. Pool was not yet opened but looked nice.

Berea is a great town to explore and go hiking. Restaurants and shopping were good. The area is known for the craftsmanship and there are plenty of hand-made things to buy.

Will need a car since the town is on the other side of the highway.

Will definitely return. AND - they are open all year!!

    Zilpo Campground

    Starting to get rundown

We camped there last week.  Spots F10, F12, & F13.  F10 said it was 50 amp on line, but it was 30 amp with a breaker that had two 20 amp 110 plugs.  It is a beautiful campground, but the government is letting it get rundown.  The bath house in our loop didn't have a shower.  A hassle trying to load up the kids to go find a shower for my friends.  I used my in camper shower.  The water faucets are getting so old and they leak so it's hard to get a hose on for water.  Around the campsites have grown up with brush and weeds worse than I have ever seen.  We were constantly  picking off tiny ticks, they were everywhere.  All three of us got ants in our campers and 2 of us got mice.  I know, all part of nature, but we don't experience that at Twin Knobs (across the lake).  The bugs were so bad that we couldn't turn any lights on at night.  The paths that lead down to the lake were overgrown.  We ended up just driving down to the beach or ramp.  There are a few projects that US Forestry could spend some money on that would make it a lot nicer over there.  Memories of how nice it was over there 20 years ago make it sad to see it now.  My campsite smelled so bad for the first 2 days that I went searching for the cause.  There was a dead (very rotten) snake that had been covered up with leaves at the edge of my campsite.  I got gloves on and cleaned it up in order to be able to be outside.  The one good thing is that the dump station had good pressure.  Remember the sites are very short, so know how long the site is if you are bringing anything over 30 feet.  No cell service, which could be nice, but we were unaware of a bad storm that hit us.  It is a very quite place though.

Guide to Beattyville

What campers like

Spacious sites: The Farm RV Resort offers 151 sites with comfortable spacing between campers. "The resort itself is beautifully maintained, with spacious, level sites that provide plenty of room for both our RV and outdoor activities. What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Several campgrounds remain open year-round, allowing winter camping options. "We had a fantastic stay at The Farm RV Resort in December. The resort's peaceful, wintery landscape provided the perfect setting for a quiet getaway," reports Mike S.

Bathroom facilities: Quality varies significantly between campgrounds. "Laundry was inexpensive and accessible all hours," notes Marc A. about Outpost Campground, while Jennifer R. describes Westgate's facilities as "the shower is small and meh."

Noise levels: Road noise affects some campgrounds more than others. "Because of its proximity to Route 11, you will hear road noise at many of the sites, including the tent sites. The cabins are situated further back in the woods, so you won't hear the road noise there," explains Lee D. about Middle Fork Campground.

Tips for camping with families

Campsite selection: For families seeking quiet sites, request locations away from main roads. "We stayed here Mothers Day weekend. Had perfect weather and our tent site was by the creek so we could here running water all night. It was so peaceful! You can stay in the tent site only area which I recommend if you want to be away from the noise and lights," advises Mary B. about Middle Fork Campground.

"We pulled into the Outpost late evening, and easily found our reservations, clearly detailed map, and access codes. The pull through sites were all flat and oriented well. We were fully set up in 15 mins," explains Jason G.
