Rockin' K Horse Campground — Kanopolis State Park

      Roomy with showers

I camped there in early October and this campground appeared to have multiple spots for campers with horses. There were numerous horse pens along with some dispersed camping area. There looked to be a trail for horse riding nearby. It was a short walk to the showers, which were nice and warm. There was only one other camper at the campground when we went.

      The beach in KS??

We went for the weekend, mostly to do some hiking. Then realized we had found one of the nest places in Kansas! We got a perfect camp spot all to ourselves. It was not necessarily private or in the woods. But we were right up against the lake. There was sand like a beach the water was alright. I mean it's a lake. We loved the hiking through limestone. We found couple caves and climbed some rock. Would be good for mntn biking

      Primitive!

This campsite is truly primitive only. There were no RV’s taking up space. There were good separate spots that included a fire pit and a table. The fire pit in our spot was up next to the shoreline where we didn’t want it so we built one with a hole and rocks. It did get a bit windy but we put the Jeep behind us so that blocked some wind. This site is not near any hiking so you will have to drive to the hiking spot.

Sandyshore Campground — Kanopolis State Park

      Party spot, kinda smelly.

We had the last spot at the end of the drive, which seemed to be a popular place for day users to park and walk the edge of the water. Several groups showed up looking to cool off and walked right by our spot. Also the area kind of smelled like dead fish. We ended up leaving because we found several tics and were worried about our dogs. It was pretty though and the weather was great. A little pricy for what it is.

Mulberry Campground — Kanopolis State Park

      Cicada City

Nice easy place to pitch a tent or hang a hammock. Primitive campground is well maintained and largely unoccupied because of the lack of hookups for RVs. Stayed on 4th of July and only one other family was in the entire campground. Close to swimming beach, but bring your own water as there is no spigot nearby. Great birds too!

      My Favorite

Every spring I look forward to getting out of the city and relaxing peacefully at this beautiful Lake! I love the gorgeous sunsets, the beach area, the hiking trails, and picking guitar with my besties! There's nothing better than being submerged in mother nature and I can't think of a better place to do it!!

    Guide to McPherson

Equestrian camping near McPherson, Kansas centers around state parks with designated horse facilities and trail access. Kanopolis State Park, located 38 miles northwest of McPherson, spans over 14,500 acres with a 3,500-acre reservoir and elevations between 1,500-1,700 feet. The region experiences hot summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and moderate winters, creating year-round camping opportunities with peak season running April through October.

    What to do

Explore equestrian trails: Sand Hills State Park maintains over 600 acres of equestrian trails through unique sand dune topography. "State park. Reservations accepted. Horse friendly. Over 600 acres of equestrian trails," notes Randy S. in his review of Sand Hills State Park Campground.

Beach access and paddling: Kanopolis Lake provides water recreation opportunities during summer months. "We got a perfect camp spot all to ourselves. It was not necessarily private or in the woods. But we were right up against the lake. There was sand like a beach," shares Carter W. about Sandyshore Campground.

Hiking through limestone: Several trail systems wind through distinctive Kansas limestone formations. "We loved the hiking through limestone. We found couple caves and climbed some rock. Would be good for mntn biking," reports Carter W. about exploring around Kanopolis State Park.

    What campers like

Spacious camping areas: Sites at horse campgrounds offer ample room for trailers and equipment. "I camped there in early October and this campground appeared to have multiple spots for campers with horses. There were numerous horse pens along with some dispersed camping area," reports Caleb J. about his stay at Rockin' K Horse Campground.

Clean facilities: Campground bathrooms and shower houses are regularly maintained throughout the camping season. "We stayed at Eagle Point as we don not have horses but this campground had the shower house that we used which was very clean and the water was actually hot! Very well maintained!" explains Alex R. about facilities at Rockin' K.

Budget-friendly options: Primitive camping areas offer lower-cost alternatives with fewer amenities. "We paid $12 for the night since we got in super late otherwise it's $25 a night. Also saw a dump station that was free," notes Victoria S. about her experience at Sand Hills State Park.

    What you should know

Primitive camping logistics: Some areas lack nearby services or facilities. "For how popular this spot is, they need to build one closer to the campground. The closest restroom is 1/2 a mile away up in Buzzard Bay though," explains Elizabeth S. about Mulberry Campground at Kanopolis State Park.

Reservation systems vary: Some campgrounds require advance booking while others operate first-come, first-served. "Would also be great if they didn't allow RV's taking up space meant for primitive camping. Also wish they would make these spots reservable as they fill up very quick since they are first come first serve. Especially on weekends," shares Elizabeth S. about Sandyshore Campground.

Wildlife concerns: Ticks are common during warmer months in grassy and wooded areas. "We ended up leaving because we found several tics and were worried about our dogs. It was pretty though and the weather was great," reports Hunter about their experience at Sandyshore Campground.

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming locations: Several designated beach areas provide safe water access. "Every spring I look forward to getting out of the city and relaxing peacefully at this beautiful Lake! I love the gorgeous sunsets, the beach area, the hiking trails," shares Kami J. about family activities at Kanopolis State Park.

Shade availability: Scout for campsites with natural shade, particularly during summer months. "Perfect mix of shade and shoreline. Beautiful views," notes Elizabeth S. about preferred family camping locations at Sandyshore Campground.

Bug protection: Plan for seasonal insect activity in all camping areas. "Showers were nice. They were over run with bugs but that was to be expected since it's early May," explains Victoria S. about spring camping conditions at Kansas State Fair RV Park.

    Tips from RVers

Leveling requirements: Many campsites require additional equipment for proper RV setup. "Park was a little unlevel so definitely need to bring extra wood to level correctly," advises Victoria S. about camping at Sand Hills State Park.

Check-in procedures: After-hours arrival systems accommodate late check-ins without reservations. "Great system for checking in after hours without a reservation. Would stay again," notes Charles about his experience at Rockin' K Horse Campground.

Site types and hookups: Campgrounds offer varied utility connections depending on location. "Spots were well spaced and organized. Some had water/electric with others being just electric," explains Charles about site options at Rockin' K Horse Campground.
