Best Cabin Camping near Lewis, IA

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Cabin accommodations near Lewis feature a mix of basic and modern options scattered around several state parks and county recreation areas. Prairie Rose State Park offers cabins with lake views approximately 30 miles northwest of Lewis, while Viking Lake State Park provides cabin rentals about 17 miles south. Most cabin units include electricity, picnic tables and fire rings, with varying levels of indoor plumbing. Lake Icaria Park and Green Valley State Park maintain cabin rentals with water hookups, offering more comfortable accommodations than primitive options. Bathroom facilities range from nearby shower houses to private indoor bathrooms in deluxe units. A recent visitor to Viking Lake noted, "Very nice park with options for tenting or RV. Sites are primitive, electric only or full hookup. Several back to the lake."

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. State park cabins typically provide basic furnishings including beds, tables, and minimal kitchen facilities, while more developed cabin rentals include refrigerators, microwaves, and heating systems. Reservations are essential during summer months, with peak booking periods from May through September. Most parks operate from April 1 to December 31, though Lake of Three Fires State Park remains open year-round. Pet policies vary by location, with most allowing leashed pets outside cabins but restricting them indoors. According to reviews, Viking Lake cabins can be booked for approximately "$18 for full hookups," making them particularly affordable compared to private cabin rentals.

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and toiletries. Kitchen equipment is minimal in basic cabins, so campers should pack cooking gear, food storage containers, and utensils. Firewood is available for purchase at most campgrounds including Prairie Rose State Park and Arrowhead Park. Several cabin locations, including Hitchcock Nature Center and Lake Icaria Park, feature on-site markets for essential supplies. For more substantial grocery needs, the towns of Harlan, Creston, and Stanton offer full-service grocery stores within 15-30 minutes of most cabin locations. Cabin visitors should also bring flashlights, as one reviewer mentioned, "No lights in the facilities, so you'll need a headlamp at night."

    Arrowhead Park Campground

    Easy Family Camping Near Omaha

Our family and another family shared a primitive tent site near the back of the park. We were first and foremost impressed with the freedom we had in choosing our site. Tent camping here is non-reservable, but once you enter the park, you may choose from any spots containing a fire pit outside of RV loops. Tent sites range from lake-front, to playground side, to more private sites on the outer rim of the park. We chose a large, private site at the back of the park. This site was well maintained and had enough space to easily accommodate two families of four. We even had a picnic shelter all to ourselves. Our site was lined by woods and farmland and had a good view of a small pond. The night was full of exciting animal noises from both the nearby farm and pond. Vault toilets were a short walk away with clean shower facilities just a few loops away. The kids enjoyed riding bikes up and down gravel roads, looking for frogs, and playing on the playground. Canoe and paddle boat rental is extremely reasonable. Hiking trails near the park entrance are rugged. The staff was incredibly kind and easy-going, yet attentive. Just a short drive from neighboring towns, this is a good starter campground for families with younger kids. We hope to return in winter to check out the camping cabins.

    Hitchcock County Nature Center

Great outdoors close to the city!

Hitchcock Nature Center is north of Crescent, IA and just let outside Omaha, NE. A short drive from the city and you are in the Loess Hills that were explored by Lewis and Clark on their trek west. The is a $3 day use pass or a $20 yearly pass available.

This place has a lot to offer anyone. They have Nature education events, archery range, a handicapped accessible boardwalk trail, hiking trails, camping, etc. There are miles of trail available with backcountry camping available for $10 per night. RV camping is also available for $15 per night with electric, showers/bathrooms, picnic tables, fire rings, etc. They also offer a couple cabins for rent.

The hiking is fantastic and offers something for every skill level. There are absolutely gorgeous views of the Missouri River valley below. It is really a nice place to get outdoors anytime of the year.

    Lake Icaria Co Park

    Great place that wasn’t crowded

Very nice place. Full hook up spots were very nice. Easy to get into, plenty of space, fire pit, picnic table, friendly & helpful park officers, lots of activities (hiking, boating, boat rentals, beach, bait shop, close to a race track in Corning, etc). We went the weekend after Memorial Day & there were plenty of spots. Quiet & family friendly. Even have food trucks that serve over by the beach!

    Springbrook State Park Campground

    Small town camping

Electric sites, no reservations required I don't think. Nice bathrooms, 3 showers for the women's room with a family size shower. Nice playground, volleyball net, basketball court. Picnic tables and fire rings. No cell service down at the campground. You could call that a pro or a con! Really nice campground employees.

    Prairie Rose State Park Campground

    Peace & quiet

Reserved electric unit 090 for the weekend, which had a scenic corn field for a backdrop - this is Iowa! Paved roads, level gravel sites, wide & mowed trails, clean pit toilets and a layout that isn’t too cramped. The pond has multiple shoreline fishing spots with picnic tables and a cleaning station. Basic playground in front of the beach which is a short drive or a ~1 mile trail walk away.

Lake of Three Fires State Park Campground

Rated so high due to the trails

Tons of miles for biking and hiking and if you fold in the trails on the public lands around, more then anyone can do in a weekend. We'll maintained. Campground, not so much. That would get a much lower score if I rated just that. Very few electric spots and they are close and in disrepair. Bathrooms are oddly placed like the group campground would need to walk all the way across the picnic area to have any access. Once they close the shower facilities, some campgrounds have no bathrooms available. Oddly, there is a LOT of vehicles driving through which for winter was surprising. All in, lots of trees, nice beach, Frisbee golf, super interesting cemetery right outside the property and loads of other public lands all sitting around a very nice lake. But bridges out, an entire row of non-working electric posts and weird bathroom placement leads to an overall odd use of a state park.

    Hitchcock County Nature Center

    Nice and peaceful

Great spot for an overnight! Restroom is clean w/ pit toilet and tp. Wifi is only accessible in the upper area of the grounds. Site number 13 is the most cozy as there’s no one next to your rig. Firewood is at the right of the entrance. Potable water available!

There are beautiful views of the Lake from the far side where you can see clear across to the campgrounds."

Water activities: Many camping cabins near Lewis provide access to lakes perfect for non-motorized watercraft. At Prairie Rose State Park, one camper shared, "This park surrounds the whole lake and you can explore everything by trail or water. Lots of fishing and swimming, we went looking for wildflowers along the lake trails."

Disc golf: Courses are available at select parks near cabin accommodations. A Lake of Three Fires visitor mentioned, "It has a great frisbee golf course that my boys loved playing. The beach sandy and clean for a refreshing dip on a hot afternoon."

Winter recreation: Several parks with cabins remain open year-round, offering seasonal activities. A camper at Hitchcock Nature Center observed, "Trails are perfect for XC skiing in winter. We saw bald eagles and deer very close to the tent."

What campers like

Privacy levels: Camping cabins vary in their seclusion, with some offering more separation than others. A Green Valley State Park visitor commented, "Space between sites are far enough you don't have to hear your neighbor, but close enough that you could have a conversation if you wanted to."

Fire cooking setups: Many cabins feature enhanced fire pit designs. A visitor to Lake of Three Fires mentioned, "All fire pits have an incredible grate system for cooking. There's an over abundance of limbs and twigs for firewood, although a saw would come in handy."

Wildlife viewing: Cabin locations provide opportunities to observe local fauna. As one Prairie Rose camper shared, "We saw bald eagles and deer very close to the tent. Very nice and clean. Even though there are tons of campsites it does not feel at all crowded."
