Lewis and Clark State Park Campground

    Clean & kid friendly

Well kept & family friendly camping in Iowa! We were able to reserve an electric unit (#30) right off the lake and across the road from the large playground (~5 setups for different age groups). We could watch the kids play while getting food ready or preparing a line to throw in the water. Short walk to the very clean restrooms with flush toilets & showers. Will come back!

    Nice

We tent camped in the modern loop. Bathroom was clean, lit, and stocked - even had hand sanitizer! RV loops had flush toilets and showers, but we didn’t stay long enough to make the trek worth it. The walk down to the tent sites was annoying at worst, but plenty doable. Campsites were level enough, and there were a few sites with pads. Lots of ticks to look out for. There’s an airfield nearby so plane noise was regular but not frequent. Wifi didn’t quite reach the tent campsites; nor did Verizon service, but T-Mobile was good. All around a fine campground.

    Swan Lake State Park Campground

    Not very tent friendly

This state park camp site close to Carroll, Iowa was nice, but we were the only tent campers there, it seemed more like a permanent RV home site. The bathrooms while nice had no working showers, they had showers but no way to turn on the water. There was a cute frisbee golf on property, a beautiful lake, and a nice paved walking path.

    Little Sioux Park Campground

    Above average county park

If half of a star was an option, I’d probably lean towards 3.5 stars.

I’d classify this as an above average county run park/campground. All sites are first come first serve. We arrived on a Saturday evening around 5:30pm and found a site no problem. There are two loops. One has electric only sites and the second has electric/water sites. One concrete pad ADA site.

Small beach area for swimming. Two playgrounds. Very nice field of wild comb flowers blooming near the shower house.

The shower house was less than than stellar. IMO it’s cleanliness kept this review from being considered near 4 stars. Usable bathrooms and shower stalls…yes, but definitely lacked attention.

    Onawa-Blue Lake KOA

Rude Manager, Unsafe Site, and Terrible Customer Service

We travel full-time with a 40′ fifth wheel and have stayed at many KOAs— but this was by far the worst experience we’ve had. Upon arrival, we were placed in Site 29, which was muddy on both sides, narrow, and clearly not suitable for a rig of our size. We asked for another option and were moved to Site 27, which wasn’t much better. The sites here are shockingly narrow— barely enough width to safely open your slides, let alone enjoy the space. When my husband asked why no gravel had been put down, the staff responded that it had been raining a lot. He said,“Don’t make excuses for someone else. That pisses me off.” He didn’t yell, threaten, or use foul language— just expressed his frustration after a long day on the road. The employee left without issue. Minutes later, the manager came to our site angry, accused my husband of cursing at her staff, and demanded we pack up and leave immediately, despite us having already set up. When I tried to clarify what had actually been said, she refused to listen and insisted she believed her employee. She even told us she“couldn’t help that people didn’t know how to drive,” which I guess was her explanation for the mud— an inappropriate and dismissive response. Meanwhile, we took photos of visible cracks in the soil— clearly it hadn’t been as wet as claimed. To make things worse:• There’s almost no signage for this KOA until you’re practically on top of it— very difficult to find without GPS.• Another campground nearby welcomed us without issue and told us we weren’t the first to show up after leaving this KOA due to similar poor treatment. We’ll be sharing this experience on our blog and social media platforms— and we’ve heard this manager has a habit of calling guests liars when she receives bad reviews. So let me be clear: we stayed there, we have the photos, the receipt, and the conversation details. This was an unacceptable experience, and we strongly recommend avoiding this KOA.

    Hitchcock County Nature Center

    Hidden Gem

Great campground! Best campground shower I've ever had in my life, both in water pressure, heat and cleanliness of facilities. Be aware that it's first come first served. Sadly did not make it to the interactive nature center, but heard that its super cool. Lower RV spots are on a hill, be prepared to level out farther than usual. Staff was amazing and very helpful. We def camped next to a butterfly/moth garden. They were everywhere!

Lewis and Clark State Park Campground

    Short weekend getaway

Nice campground. Very few tent only - mostly RVs/trailers. Washrooms basic but clean. Large site under trees with mix of sun & shade. Grassy area for tent. Access to water close by. Large playground for kids. Campground host had firewood. Picnic table & firepit with grill rack in good condition. Nearby boat ramp to load kayak onto Blue Lake. Many water lilies but sheltered at one end so good for kayak. Everyone seemed friendly though some folk stayed up pretty late on Friday!

    Hitchcock County Nature Center

    Amazing!!

We camp all the time at different locations, and I 100% recommend this campground! The hosts are so polite and helpful and they keep the place immaculate. Even the pit toilets were spotless and didn’t smell. The hosts went around several times a day collecting trash and even mopping the pit bathrooms. Camping here also gives you access to the playground and nature trails into some beautiful countryside. The only downside is bring several bottles of bugspray, the mosquitos are terrible!

Lewis and Clark State Park Campground

Nice evening swim after a hot day

    Vibe: Relaxed summer lake fun.

    Cleanliness: Average

    Facilities: Slightly dated but adequate

General spots: Good size, good spacing, not private. Large cottonwood trees offer good shade on lake side spots.

Our site: 10. Close to the swimming area. Not far from bathrooms.

Noise: Friendly chatter. Mostly quiet. Some music from the summer camp across the lake(see below).

    Cell signal: Good (Verizon)

Other: The lake isn’t huge, but the water was not murky and you could wade out pretty far and still be shallow enough to stand. A summer camp is across the lake and they played some evening music and morning music starts at 7:30.

Guide to Dunlap

The western Iowa region surrounding Dunlap features rolling hills and prairie landscapes with elevations ranging between 1,100-1,400 feet. Located in the Loess Hills formation, the area experiences hot summers with temperatures often reaching 90°F and cold winters that can drop below 10°F. Campgrounds typically operate from April through October with limited winter availability at select locations.

What to do

Hiking in the Loess Hills: Hitchcock Nature Center offers extensive trail systems with varying difficulty levels. "This is one of our favorite places to camp. It's beautiful and there's plenty of hiking. The campgrounds are a little way away from the road and more secluded so they're very quiet," notes Karen W. about Hitchcock County Nature Center.

Fishing opportunities: Nelson Park provides access to stocked lakes suitable for various fishing techniques. "It's a good place for camping not perfect. Has a descent size lake good for kayaking and fishing," according to Edger G. who visited Crawford County Park Nelson Park.

Educational programs: Participate in nature programs at local parks. "When I think of 'nature center' I think of a stuffy little cabin with taxidermy. This site is far far more than that, with hiking trails, educational programs, a museum, event halls, and of course camping," explains Lynn G. about Hitchcock Nature Center.

History exploration: Visit the Lewis and Clark State Park Campground where you can learn about the famous expedition. "They have a replica of the Boat that Lewis and Clark traveled on many years ago. They will also occasionally take it out and give rides. They also have a history museum to accompany the boat," shares Katie S.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain well-kept bathrooms and showers. "Very nice campground. Large spacious pull thru sites. Extremely clean bathrooms and showers," reports Maureen A. about On-Ur-Wa RV Park.

Family-friendly amenities: Parks frequently offer playgrounds and recreational areas. "There's a pretty big playground near all the sites. When I went in the first weekend of October they had a little trick or treat night too! Extremely nice amenities; flush toilet and showers," says Morgan K. about Lewis and Clark State Park Campground.

Convenient locations: Several options provide easy highway access. "This is a nice, quiet spot. Lots of trees. The sites are easy to access, and it was not full despite being a Friday in July. It is a good price for full hook up, restrooms and showers," notes Paul M. about Pottawattamie County Fairgrounds.

Small town charm: Camping near local communities offers unique experiences. "It surrounds a city park and there is plenty of room to spread out in their well manicured park. With 30/50 electric and water this place is well worth the $15 they charge," reports Kelly R. about Missouri Valley City Park.

What you should know

Train noise: Some campgrounds experience railroad disruptions. "Place is well maintained with plenty of hookups, a nice view to the park, picnic tables and a dump station. Price is now 25 dll per night. Besides the traffic noise because it's close to the hwy, the train passed at night like 4 or 5 times, so have that in mind if you light sleep," warns marisol G. about Missouri Valley City Park.

Seasonal water activities: Many lakes offer swimming but with limited seasons. "We were able to reserve an electric unit (#30) right off the lake and across the road from the large playground. We could watch the kids play while getting food ready or preparing a line to throw in the water," shares N K. about Lewis and Clark State Park.

Glamping alternatives: For those seeking upscale outdoor accommodations in Dunlap, Iowa, glamping options range from yurts to cabins. "The sites for tent/van was $15. The bathroom/showers were super clean. The established trees all over was fantastic," reports G M. about Lake Cunningham Campground.

Self-registration: Several parks operate on honor systems. "It is all on an honor system so make sure to bring some cash. That way this place can be here to stay for everyone to enjoy," mentions Kelly R. about Missouri Valley City Park.

Tips for camping with families

Multiple play areas: Crawford Creek County Rec Area offers various recreation options. "Multiple play areas for kids. Water good for fishing, kayaking and swimming. Nice cabins for rent," advises Megan H. about the family-friendly Crawford Creek County Rec Area.

Educational opportunities: Schedule visits around nature center programs. "We love doing their extra classes," Karen W. notes about Hitchcock Nature Center, which offers regular educational programming suitable for various age groups.

Water activities: Many parks feature lakes with swimming areas and boat rentals. "We could watch the kids play while getting food ready or preparing a line to throw in the water. Short walk to the very clean restrooms with flush toilets & showers," N K. shares about Lewis and Clark State Park.

Seasonal events: Some campgrounds host special activities during holidays. "When I went in the first weekend of October they had a little trick or treat night too!" mentions Morgan K. about Lewis and Clark State Park.

Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: Multiple campgrounds offer complete services. "Night 1 of a 42 moves trip. You can find a few decent youtube videos that show the park and it was like living a dream. Pulled in, John came into the office, asked if I was a Good Sam member and charged me $43.34 for a full hook-up, extra long pull thru on the outside of the trees," shares andrew about On-Ur-Wa RV Park.

Site spacing considerations: Some parks have tighter layouts than others. "RV camping is also available for $15 per night with electric, showers/bathrooms, picnic tables, fire rings, etc. They also offer a couple cabins for rent," explains Pat V. about Hitchcock Nature Center.

Dump stations: Most parks provide sanitary facilities. "Water and dump site on 11th st on the left pasted the ball field. $10 a night 10% discount for eligible people. We stayed 2 nights and would stay again," notes Always C. about Tekamah Memorial Park.
