Delphos Section - Buckeye Trail (Points 18-19)

    On the trail respite

You're learning to backpack the Buckeye Trail, and you want to know where and how you can camp along the trail. This primitive site is located a short hop (.17 mile) off the trail adjacent to Hipp's Lock, part of the old Miami-Erie Canal towpath.  There's space enough for perhaps two tents, with metal fire ring, and plenty of deadfall for that small survival TV fire. The pond is filled with wildlife, and the tree frogs and bull frogs will lull you to sleep. Another Boy Scout project that benefits the Buckeye Trail. You'll need to Leave-No-Trace, as it's a primitive site, but it's a welcome respite from the road walking of this section.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Though labeled as dispersed camping, most sites near Uniondale require payment and often reservations, particularly during summer months. Clay T. notes: "Although it states in the app free dispersed camping. Doesn't always mean just that."

Limited facilities at true primitive sites: The more remote camping options follow strict Leave No Trace principles with minimal infrastructure. For the Buckeye Trail sites, campers should prepare to pack everything in and out. Jonathan W. advises: "You'll need to Leave-No-Trace, as it's a primitive site, but it's a welcome respite from the road walking of this section."

Weather considerations: The Uniondale area experiences humid continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. Spring camping often involves muddy conditions due to seasonal rain. Fall camping offers cooler temperatures and reduced bugs. Always check local fire restrictions before planning campfires.

Tips for camping with families

Choose sites with amenities: For families, the more developed primitive sites with designated fire rings and picnic tables provide easier camping experiences. Chain O'Lakes State Park offers these basic amenities while still providing a rustic experience.

Pack water and supplies: Most primitive sites near Uniondale do not offer drinking water access. Families should bring sufficient water for drinking, cooking and cleaning, calculating approximately 1 gallon per person per day.

Consider spacing between sites: Some primitive camping areas have sites positioned relatively close together. Shawna T. notes that even when "close in proximity to each other, everyone remained respectful of the noise" at the chainolakes campground.

Tips from RVers

Limited hookup options: Most primitive camping areas near Uniondale have no hookups for RVs. Chain O'Lakes State Park does offer some electric hookups and sanitary dump stations for RVers who want a more rustic experience but need basic services.

Site leveling challenges: RV campers should bring leveling blocks as many primitive sites may not be perfectly flat. Clay T. mentions that Chain O'Lakes provides "pretty leveled out spot[s]" but preparation for adjustments is recommended.

Access road considerations: Many primitive camping areas have narrow, sometimes unpaved access roads. Larger rigs should research site-specific access information before attempting to reach more remote camping locations in the Uniondale region.
