Turner Lake South Camping Area offers equestrian access beyond the dedicated horse trails mentioned at Chain O'Lakes State Park. Located 8 miles southeast of Wonder Lake, this campground allows tent camping with easy access to the multiple bridle paths that connect across the 3,000-acre property. Sites T9 and T10 provide more space for horse trailers, with gravel areas that remain usable even after rainfall.
What to do
Kayaking through waterways: At Turner Lake South — Chain O' Lakes State Park, visitors can explore multiple connected lakes. "I love to kayak through here because I don't need to paddle through the river unless I'm feeling competitive. I enjoy this route for the wildlife and nature scenery. I've seen beavers, minks, ferrets, and sand cranes on my two trips so far," notes Cora M.
Fishing at multiple access points: The lakes throughout Chain O'Lakes provide numerous fishing opportunities with clear water visibility. "The lake was very nice. We were able to kayak but be careful getting the kayaks in. Stairs down to the pier and the bottom of the lake is very mushy. The water was very clear and you could see the fish swim by," reports Julia B.
Trail riding beyond park boundaries: Fox Den Campground provides additional access points for horseback riders looking to explore less-trafficked areas. "The campground is the closest to the boat dock and concession which serves as the camp store," explains Debra M., making it convenient for riders to stock up on supplies before heading out.
What campers like
Secluded campsites with buffer zones: The Fox Den loop at Chain O'Lakes stands out for its privacy. "Fox den at Chain-o-Lakes state park provides a more secluded camping experience than Honeysuckle or the 2 tent camping areas. Pads are pretty level, and each site has some semblance of privacy from other campers," says Ian C., noting his site was "protected on 3 sides by some fairly dens foliage and trees."
Budget-friendly options: Burnidge Forest Preserve offers affordable alternatives for equestrian camping near Wonder Lake. "These campsites are as low as $12/night!! One of my favorite spots to test new gear. Family friendly. There's some small trails around as well that are beginner," reports Addison G. about Turner Lake South.
Convenient facilities: The main campground areas maintain clean facilities. "The bathrooms/showers are always clean and have hot water. The only downfall that I can see is that they are not consistent with cleaning the outhouses," mentions Meg K., highlighting the facility upkeep at Turner Lake South.
What you should know
Reserve early for horse-friendly sites: Horse trailers require specific sites that book quickly. "The full hook ups fill up fast no spur of the moment camping unless it is early or late in the season," warns Jeanne M. about Fox Den Campground.
No alcohol policy: Unlike some private campgrounds, state parks have strict rules. "The other thing is ALL Illinois State Parks are now enforcing a no alcohol policy even if you are on your own site," notes Jeanne M.
Heavy weekend traffic: Waterways can become crowded during peak times. "Chain O Lakes in general get pretty busy on the water, but the state park is off the main part of the water system, so even a little fishingboat can be fun without the large speedboat wakes here," explains Marisa A.
Tips for camping with families
Equestrian activities for children: Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort offers a family-friendly alternative with organized activities. "Very Friendly Staff I received warm welcome from nice staff at the entrance gate. Tent Campground is nicely tucked inside by the lake. Quit place night time I can hear fish jumping from the water," shares Leo V.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: The diverse ecosystems provide excellent nature education. "We did a nice short hike in area. We had a great time at this campground and would visit again," says Michelle M. about Fox Den Campground.
Pack for tick protection: Several campgrounds report insect concerns. "Saw several ticks/mosquitoes, decent bathrooms/showers. Sites seemed pretty close together," warns Truly W. about Turner Lake South.
Tips from RVers
Loop selection matters: At Rock Cut State Park, which offers equestrian-friendly facilities 45 minutes west of Wonder Lake, the campground layout varies significantly. "If you've been up and down the I90 corridor in Illinois and haven't had the chance to swing by Rock Cut SP... you'll want to ensure you stop by this multi-campus campground gem," writes Stuart K., who explains there are seven distinct campgrounds within the park.
Electrical considerations: For horse owners bringing trailers with living quarters, understanding power availability is crucial. "Fox den at Chain-o-Lakes state park... Electric is easily accessible, and water/sanitary is easy to get in and out of," notes Ian C.
Level sites for larger rigs: Sites designed for horse trailers typically offer more room. "This campground is within a couple hours of Chicago so it makes a nice getaway for the weekend. Things were pretty filled up when we came here. However there is plenty of space around to find a spot on your own," describes Art S. about Fox Den.
