The Castaways store at Coon Creek is particularly well-stocked with "ice, filtered water, beer, groceries, bait, firewood, and lots of other items," according to a recent visitor. Shelbyville, approximately 15 minutes from several lake-area cabin sites, provides additional shopping options for more extensive grocery needs.

    Coon Creek (IL)

Great Camping Experience, Perfect for Family Vacation

We've been camping at Coon Creek, on a beautiful Lake Shelbyville, for a few years now, the place is perfect for family vacations. And that's exactly what we do. Gather 10-12 of us, reserve a buddy site, so we can all be on one campsite (big enough to fit 5 tents and an RV). If you have a small group and want to get a small site, there are plenty of those. Some even with lake views. The campground is really big, with tons of different sites. Some are closer to each other, but still very private. Nestled in trees. Equipped in fire pits, and lantern posts. Gravel surfaces, with grass around. The site we always get, is situated along the camp road, but once we are set up, it becomes very private. there is no one in a close proximity, just the road traffic. Which is not bad at all. Good overflow parking, perfectly hidden in the trees. Showers and toilets are in great condition, and usually very clean. Well maintained campground. Illinois is pretty boring, and I know this web site is for more remote camping, but all facts considered, if you're looking for a camping getaway, in Chicago area, only about 4 hours drive (south on I-57) - this is a perfect place for you. Lithia Springs Marina offers boat rentals, we usually get a 12 person pontoon boat for few days, to cruise the 26 mile long lake, or chill in one of many, many beautiful coves. Coon Creek is not too far from town of Shelbyville, where you can stock up on camping food, and beverages. Also few quick-bite restaurants in town. There might be some hiking and biking trails, visit the website for more information. You can book on reserveamerica.com.

This place is really shady and is not exposed to the sun. The sites here are really clean and well maintained. Its about 12 dollars for a campsite and is well worth it. They include restrooms and tap water. There is the usual fire ring and picnic tables

Robin Hood Woods Campground & Cottage Resort

Fun, Clean, safe for the family

Just finished our second trip/vacation here. We stayed in the rental cabins, but are in the waiting list for a seasonal site. Right next to the lake. Plenty of room for everyone, from tents to the massive RVs. The pool very clean and never gets over crowded. Staff are knowledgeable and polite. Friendly/quiet dogs allowed. Wonderful pirate ship playground. Weekend activities for the kids. Electric golf carts allowed. Very inexpensive compared to campgrounds closer to me.

    Coon Creek (IL)

    Beautiful campground with amenities

Great campground. We really enjoyed it here. We got a pull thru 100ft site with full hookups and it was so nice. Gravel looked brand new, and brand new concrete pad for the fire pit. The picnic table was in great condition and xtra large too. My table cloth was too small. Not really any area of the campground to shore fish, but bring a boat and this site is for you. Plenty of room for your rig, vehicles and a boat. The beach for swimming was the kids favorite part.

Robin Hood Woods Campground & Cottage Resort

    One of our favorites!

This is one of our favorites. It’s close to home for us but also, very clean with nice staff and a fun environment. The pool is a huge plus, it’s so incredibly nice. There’s a small game room and little camp store with firewood and ice. The sites are kind of close together but they’re clean and have nice fire pits and tables. The campground is well cared for. We went 4th of July weekend and they even had a golf cart parade and through candy which was so fun for our son. We’ll always visit here.

    Coon Creek (IL)

Big Campground with great lake access

I have camped here in a motorhome with full hookups and tent camped as well.

The camp sites are divided into many loops and have side pullin sites and backin sites. The RV and tent sites are grouped in the same loops and there are many that have trails from the site right to the lake and people leave the boat near the campsite but still on the water. The restrooms and shower houses are clean as all the Lake Shelbyville campgrounds are maintained by the Corps of Engineers. This campground is very busy in the prime camping season, but if you are camping with a group and have a boat this is the place to go. There are several buddy sites here that are set up very well for groups of RV's and tents camping together. There are a few isolated sites on corners of loops, but most are fairly close together. There is a swimming beach here and lots of boat traffic, but quiet hours are observed, so you can get a good night's sleep before an action packed day on the lake. The fishing is good if you have a boat, but there is very little bank fishing areas available. Part of the campground is open after Labor Day, but the main season is Memorial day to Labor day.

    Wolf Creek State Park Campground

    Great camping all year round

We have camped here many times and this time was awesome as well. The park is huge and is one of the only state park's in Illinois with horse camping and horse trails. There are 13 horse camp sites and additional trailer parking for about 6 more rigs with tie out posts for riders that will not be camping. There are several miles of horse trails and the area is set apart from hiking trails and the other camping areas. There are hundreds of campsites in this park in addition to the horse campgrounds and the entire area is maintained by the US Corps of Engineers. There are full hookup RV sites everywhere with tons of flush toilet bathrooms and shower houses in each large section. There is also a tent camp area without electricity, these sites are cheaper and there are lake front sites available here too. There is a beach that closes after Labor Day, but there are lots of sites available all year round. There are lots of hiking trails and deer run through the park in herds in the winter months. The hiking is OK in this park and good if you like short 1 to 1 1/2 mile hikes. I recommend visiting in the fall after Labor Day, October when leaves are changing is my favorite time for this campground. Clean restrooms, showers and a small store at the entrance for bait, firewood or forgotten items make this a great place to spend a few days.

    Wolf Creek State Park Campground

Bad Management Ready To Ruin Your Holiday

This park is beautiful, clean and the people were friendly. My issue is with the site supervisor and superintendent. On July 4th 2025 we were given the option of moving our entire campsite or being kicked out of the park. JULY 4TH! We booked our campsite in the last week of April, paid in full. We were the second party to book any spot in the entire campground! We chose our spot specifically for the access to the water and seclusion from the rest of the sites. Come to find out(a day after we set up camp) we booked in "horse camp" which apparently requires you to have horses. It never stated this on the website or rental confirmation we received. Nobody reached out to us in the three months we held the booking to confirm if we had horses. There was no on-site check in that could have saved us the trouble. No, instead we had to take 4 hours out of our holiday to pack all of our stuff and move into overflow camping or be forced to leave. Because of their mistake. Absolutely ruined our holiday with zero remorse or understanding. The icing on the cake was as we were leaving horse camp we noticed multiple other camp sites where people had not brought horses. They stated this happens all the time. If site management had two braincells to rub together they would fix their website instead of consistently ruining peoples trips and holidays. And then these people had the audacity to say they weren't going to charge us for the campsite they moved us to?!?! In reality, we should be receiving a full refund for the campsite we did pay for and free passes for the rest of the year. There is a second state campground on the other side of the lake I would suggest before coming to this place.

    Clinton Lake State Recreation Area

Busy Central Illinois Campground on a lake

This is our go-to campground when visiting the U of I. It is a large campground with well spaced campsites for tents and rvs. Almost every site has plenty of shade with lots of tree cover. This also means in the dog days of summer the breeze is blocked by the trees so get an electric site even with a tent and bring a fan. They have a beach and a boat launch. The loops that allow alcohol can get a bit rowdy with weekend partiers, but the alcohol restricted loops can get loud from all the families. However, with full hook-up options there is no generator noise. The showers/bathrooms are kept up well given the massive amount of people served. If you own a boat and camp, this place is ideal for central Illinois.

Guide to Weldon

Lake Shelbyville provides the backdrop for most cabin accommodations near Weldon, Illinois, with the 11,100-acre reservoir offering 172 miles of shoreline for waterfront activities. Located in central Illinois, most cabins near Weldon sit within a 30-mile radius, typically ranging from rustic one-room structures to larger multi-room units with varying levels of amenities. Winter cabin availability is limited, with Wolf Creek State Park Campground maintaining year-round operations while most other facilities close from November through April.

What to do

Fishing access: At Clinton Lake State Recreation Area, cabin guests can enjoy unusually warm lake waters. "Clinton Lake is a boating destination as the waters are unusually warm due to the discharge from the nearby nuclear plant," reports Stacia R., who recommends exploring different fishing spots around the lake's various coves and inlets.

Swimming options: The beach at Coon Creek offers a popular swimming area for cabin guests. "We chose a buddy site even though we weren't camping with another family because we like the location. It was right at the end of the peninsula," notes Melissa B., who also mentioned "a great little beach that my son really like to swim" with particularly warm water.

Boat rentals: If staying in cabins without direct water access, boat rentals are available at nearby marinas. "Lithia Springs Marina offers boat rentals, we usually get a 12 person pontoon boat for few days, to cruise the 26 mile long lake, or chill in one of many, many beautiful coves," explains a Coon Creek visitor describing water recreation options beyond swimming.

What campers like

Lake views: Many cabins at Wolf Creek State Park Campground offer lake access and views. "Right on lake Shelbyville. 309 spots 141 are reservable," notes Sonya A., highlighting the park's popularity and size. Sites with water views tend to book earliest, especially those with private path access.

Campground stores: On-site supplies eliminate trips to town when staying in cabins with limited provisions. "The Lady at store has everything needed for fire and bbq," mentions Abdul Basith Asim M. about Clinton Lake's store, which proves convenient for cabin guests needing last-minute essentials.

Family activities: Playgrounds and organized weekend events enhance cabin stays for families. "Weekend activities for the kids. Electric golf carts allowed. Very inexpensive compared to campgrounds closer to me," reports Janelle H. about her experience at Robin Hood Woods Campground & Cottage Resort, highlighting the family-friendly atmosphere.

What you should know

Cabin variations: Quality and amenities vary significantly between locations. "Clean campground but camping proximity is very close," notes Felicia about Wolf Creek State Park Campground, a consideration when booking since some cabin areas have limited privacy.

Reservation timing: Weekends book far in advance, especially during summer. "Large campground that gets booked up most weekends. Holidays are crazy," warns Bree C. about Clinton Lake, suggesting midweek stays for better availability and quieter surroundings.

Winter operation limitations: Most facilities shut down after October. "Off season. Seclusion. Had practically the whole campground to ourselves. Water was turned off for winter which wasn't entirely clear," cautions Matthew I. about his Clinton Lake experience, emphasizing the need to verify winter amenities.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming facilities: Lake Taylorville City Campground offers cabin access with nearby swimming. "It's not anything fancy but it has the basics," reports Jana C., noting its convenience for families wanting water recreation without long drives.

Kid-friendly cabin options: Look for sites with playground access. "Great campground for a chill entertaining weekend with kids. Beautiful new pool was perfectly maintained with plenty of tables and chairs to make a day of the time at the pool," shares Sarah S. about Robin Hood Woods, highlighting amenities beyond basic cabin features.

Quiet vs. active areas: Different cabin loops cater to different family preferences. "The different loops have very different feels...some are very shaded in the trees, some more wide open with a prairie type view," explains Stacia R. about Clinton Lake, helping families choose appropriate locations based on their needs.

Tips from RVers

Cabin proximity to hookups: When renting cabins, proximity to restroom facilities varies significantly. "The bathrooms were dirty and weren't cleaned until Friday. The beach was small and also not well kept," notes Heidi about Wolf Creek State Park, suggesting guests verify bathroom conditions and location when booking.

Site conditions: Cabin sites generally lack the leveling issues common with RV sites. "The sites are mostly gravel and level," reports Melissa B. about Coon Creek, which proves helpful for cabins that include outdoor seating areas or cooking spaces.

Off-season considerations: Timberline Campground has limited seasonal operation for their cabins. "My girlfriend rented us a cabin for the weekend and we had a blast. Great people and great staff," mentions William L., though potential renters should note this campground closes entirely from November through March.
