Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area

    Great family campground

We LOVE Hazlet! We have a popup camper and camp here often. It's a huge campground with a smaller reservable section and an extensive first come, first serve section. There are usually always spaces available. Sites are pretty level, are gravel, wooded, and spacious. There are several 'loops'' of sites that extend out and have water views. The shower houses are clean and air conditioned, there's a nice camp store that serves breakfast and basic lunches, and there is a nice large zero entry pool for a $5 fee on weekends. The campground hosts are sprinkled througout the grounds and are always friendly and accommodating. They have a huge Halloween event every year where people decorate their sites (pretty extensively) and there's a haunted house, then kids trick or treat from site to site. The campground also provides pumpkin painting contests and other fun activities. Better get there at least a week in advance for the halloweeen festivities- it fills up!

    Eagle Creek State Park Campground

    Wooded Solitude / Family Friendly

Review of Drive In Tent Camping Site 2. Showed up on a Thursday night and had our pick of all the drive in and walk in sites. We decided on site 2 in the drive in area. Previous reviews and a book by John Schirle on Tent Camping in Illinois helped us with this decision as well. Decent maintained sites with some older picnic tables and fire rings, but let's be honest this stuff sits outside 24/7. Site 2 seemed to sit back the farthest with site 1 a close second. Both wooded sites that made for great shade and helped some when it was raining. Any two families looking for two sites could certainly set up and share the experience. Nice little cove behind them to try fishing. Just watch the hike down the path or ravine. Dog friendly, fresh water supply (hint put the handle all the way up and wait a few seconds), ability to store stuff in the car close by, outhouse toilets visible at the walk in parking lot, and helpful host for easy check in who even sells fire wood made for a great few days ($5 a bundle). Rated B/S site at a cost of $10 a night.

    Sangchris Lake State Park Campground

    Lakeside Relaxation

These walk in sites check all the boxes.  At the western part of the RV loop, is a peninsula of primitive tent camping spots to choose from.  About half the sites were filled by the second day we were there.  We settled on 62, which is spacious and provides access to the path from the front and behind where you can walk into site 64 as well.  A parking area with a single spot for each camp site is well marked and by two vault toilets.  Park staff and host were great.  A decent fishing spot is just in front of site 64.  $8 for IL residents is hard to beat, if you don't need an RV spot with electric.  A water source is also by the parking spots.  The weekend we were there the weather had cooled some and a great breeze was coming off the lake.  Springfield being so close is a bonus.

The only negative is like any spot and how previous people leave the camp looking before you are there.  Some garbage in the fire pit and random spots are par for the course in any state park.  Pick up the trash and dump it in the dumpster by the parking lot.  Leave the site better than you found it is our motto.

Illini Campground — Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area

    Beautiful lake

We had reservations nearly one month ahead, and the campground was full, yet quiet and restful. Our site only had electric hookup, and there were two pit toilets in the cul de sac, and we never found the showers that were supposedly on site. The acorns were falling, and we nearly jumped out of bed when they struck our roof! No fault of the campground, but a mild annoyance nevertheless. There is a camp store but we didn't visit it. The nearby town of Carlyle has a Walmart and several fast food eateries, but only one independent restaurant, Mexican , which came highly recommended. We met campers that return here often, but it was our first time. We would stay again if in the area.

    Okaw Valley Kampground

Ok for a one night stay

The owners are friendly. The pool is well-maintained and pleasant. The campsite is an old KOA frozen in time. It's clean but dated. Water and electricity are available on site with an old picnic table. Only one bathhouse (toilet, shower) is a bit far from our site.

Guide to Vandalia

Vandalia, Illinois offers diverse camping experiences within the prairie-lake ecosystem of central Illinois, where elevations range from 490 to 550 feet above sea level. Vandalia's position near the Kaskaskia River watershed creates unique camping opportunities with a mix of wooded terrain and open water access. Summer temperatures typically reach highs in the mid-80s with winter lows averaging in the 20s.

What to Do

Fishing at multiple locations: Lake Shelbyville provides excellent bass, bluegill and catfish fishing opportunities. "The fishing lake is beautiful and stocked with bass, bluegill and catfish," notes a visitor to Okaw Valley Kampground, which has its own stocked pond for casual anglers.

Water recreation options: Beyond swimming, many campgrounds offer additional water activities. "Lithia Springs is a great campground with a wonderful marina located on beautiful Lake Shelbyville," explains a camper who stayed at Lithia Springs. The marina rents fishing boats and pontoon boats for day excursions.

Hiking trail exploration: Several campgrounds feature walking paths suitable for different skill levels. At Country Bend Campground, campers appreciate "the bridges with trails to ponds" that provide scenic walking routes through diverse terrain without requiring advanced hiking skills.

What Campers Like

Clean facilities: Cleanliness consistently earns high marks from visitors. "The bathroom was the cleanest I have seen at a campsite," reports a camper who stayed at Okaw Valley Kampground, while another mentions the "clean shower houses with warm water" at Country Bend Campground.

Recreational amenities: Many campgrounds provide organized activities beyond nature exploration. "Big inground pool, 18 hole putt putt, lots of outdoor games, planned activities on the weekends," describes a Country Bend Campground visitor, highlighting the structured recreation options.

Helpful staff: Campground hosts earn praise for their service orientation. "The owners, Barb and Gary, work their asses off to upkeep this place," notes one Okaw Valley Kampground camper, while another camper shared how "the owners stored our bikes, watched our tent, and even picked us up from the hospital" during a medical emergency.

What You Should Know

Yurt camping options: Yurt camping near Vandalia, Illinois provides a comfortable alternative to traditional tent camping. Many luxury yurts include amenities like electricity, beds with linens, and sometimes even private bathrooms. Some yurts at Eldon Hazlet State Recreation Area are positioned to take advantage of lake views.

Reservation requirements: Most popular campgrounds require advance booking, especially during peak season. "If camping on weekends May to September will need to book in advanced," advises a Lithia Springs camper. This applies especially to the limited luxury yurt accommodations available near Vandalia.

Weather considerations: The area experiences significant seasonal variations. One camper at Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area mentioned they "went in late April and had a good time with not ideal weather," indicating spring can be unpredictable despite being a popular camping season.

Tips for Camping with Families

Multiple playgrounds: Several parks feature kid-friendly play areas. "There is a beach for campers to use, and a dock to fish off. A playground for kids," explains a visitor to COE Lake Carlyle McNair Campground, highlighting amenities specifically designed for younger campers.

Swimming options: Beyond natural swimming areas, some campgrounds offer pools. "The swimming pool feels great on the hot summer days," notes an Okaw Valley Kampground reviewer, providing an alternative when lake conditions aren't ideal.

Weekend activities: Scheduled events keep children entertained. "Holiday weekends have so many planned activities, some for all ages," mentions a Country Bend Campground visitor, pointing to organized programming that supplements natural exploration.

Tips from RVers

Site spacing varies: Some campgrounds provide more privacy than others. "The sites are spacious but fairly level and clean," reports a Stephen A. Forbes State Recreation Area camper, while another notes that "most of the sites are large and a good distance from the next one" at Lithia Springs.

Hookup availability: Water quality and hookup consistency differ between locations. "Water and electricity are available on site with an old picnic table," explains an Okaw Valley visitor, though some campers have reported inconsistent water quality at certain sites.

Accessibility considerations: Site conditions may present challenges for larger vehicles. "Not a large campground. There's a catch and release lake on site, but not really any fish. There is a super long carp though. Sites are nice but not many pull in RV sites or tent sites," notes an Okaw Valley Kampground camper, indicating potential limitations for certain rig types.
