Best Cabin Camping near Decatur, IL

Several cabin camping options surround Decatur, Illinois, with locations such as Springfield KOA and Robin Hood Woods Campground & Cottage Resort offering various accommodations. Cabins at Springfield KOA feature electricity, while those at Robin Hood Woods provide more extensive amenities. "The cabins in our area were clean, with a picnic table and fire ring," wrote one visitor about their experience. Most cabins include simple furnishings with beds, tables, and minimal kitchen facilities. Electric hookups are standard, though water and bathroom facilities vary by location, with some properties offering on-site showers and restrooms while others require guests to use communal facilities.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Clinton Lake State Recreation Area and Sangchris Lake State Park both offer cabin rentals with varying levels of amenities. Many cabins operate seasonally, with peak availability between April and October, though some remain open year-round. Reservations are typically required and can be made online through campground websites or by phone. On-site camp stores at places like Springfield KOA sell essential items including firewood, ice, and basic groceries. Depending on the cabin, cooking facilities range from outdoor fire rings with grates to small kitchenettes with microwaves or hot plates. Refrigeration is limited in most cabins, so coolers with ice are recommended for food storage during warmer months.

    Springfield KOA

    Spacious Green Grounds

Springfield KOA is actually in Rochester, but it is only about 25 mins into Springfield and all the wonderful Lincoln historic sites. The campground is very nice, a lot of amenities for families like pool, little bikes, miniature golf and horseshoes. Shop has laundry, ice and oropane, there's free wifi. Sites have power and water, you have to go to dump station on the way out as there aren't individual sewers. But there is grass, picnic table and fire ring at every site, trees all around.

    Sangchris Lake State Park Campground

    5 stars with a caveat

This is a beautiful state park, but hopefully you won’t have the same experience I did with the electric hookup. I stayed here right after the fourth of July and because of the heat over this holiday weekend and a completely full campground, the electricity couldn’t meet the demand and a transformer blew. By the time I arrived the transformer was repaired, however the pedestals in the section I was supposed to stay in had a problem. I was supposed to stay in site 27, but after 3 attempts to get power at 3 different sites, number 24 was the winner and this was a great site! The campground hosts were fantastic in resolving the situation as well.

Site 24 is huge and level with a picnic table and fire ring. Electric but no water at site. The site is totally private on one side because of a lake inlet and there’s a large back area right on the lake. The gravel pad is located right near a large, old bald cypress.

This park has multiple public use areas, 2 campgrounds, boat launches, fishing piers and a beach. I didn’t use the public restrooms because they were closed due to Covid-19. I was able to get internet with Verizon.

This state park felt like it was dropped into the middle of cornfields and made for a fun drive. The sunset views and stars were awesome!

    Coon Creek (IL)

Great Camping Experience, Perfect for Family Vacation

We've been camping at Coon Creek, on a beautiful Lake Shelbyville, for a few years now, the place is perfect for family vacations. And that's exactly what we do. Gather 10-12 of us, reserve a buddy site, so we can all be on one campsite (big enough to fit 5 tents and an RV). If you have a small group and want to get a small site, there are plenty of those. Some even with lake views. The campground is really big, with tons of different sites. Some are closer to each other, but still very private. Nestled in trees. Equipped in fire pits, and lantern posts. Gravel surfaces, with grass around. The site we always get, is situated along the camp road, but once we are set up, it becomes very private. there is no one in a close proximity, just the road traffic. Which is not bad at all. Good overflow parking, perfectly hidden in the trees. Showers and toilets are in great condition, and usually very clean. Well maintained campground. Illinois is pretty boring, and I know this web site is for more remote camping, but all facts considered, if you're looking for a camping getaway, in Chicago area, only about 4 hours drive (south on I-57) - this is a perfect place for you. Lithia Springs Marina offers boat rentals, we usually get a 12 person pontoon boat for few days, to cruise the 26 mile long lake, or chill in one of many, many beautiful coves. Coon Creek is not too far from town of Shelbyville, where you can stock up on camping food, and beverages. Also few quick-bite restaurants in town. There might be some hiking and biking trails, visit the website for more information. You can book on reserveamerica.com.

This place is really shady and is not exposed to the sun. The sites here are really clean and well maintained. Its about 12 dollars for a campsite and is well worth it. They include restrooms and tap water. There is the usual fire ring and picnic tables

    Sangchris Lake State Park Campground

    Was a nice stay

Have camped here a few times and have walked the trails for years. I camped at the primitive sites my first time. The sites were clean and fairly well maintained for primitive. Picnic table and fire pit were in good shape. Plenty of shade! Camp host were very nice and helpful. Non flushable restrooms were clean and stocked. It stormed pretty bad the second night there. Woke up to find my tent wasnt so waterproof. But made most of it that morning because I was also leaving that day. On my second most recent trip we stayed in the loop on an electrical site. Once again the sites were clean and the fireplace was clean and ready. Camp host were once again very helpful and polite. The kids had a great time even though due to covid-19 the playground was closed. The only reason I am giving 4 stars is the fact that the trails and bridges were in horrible condition. It was heartbreaking to see them in this condition as I've walked them since a child.

Robin Hood Woods Campground & Cottage Resort

Fun, Clean, safe for the family

Just finished our second trip/vacation here. We stayed in the rental cabins, but are in the waiting list for a seasonal site. Right next to the lake. Plenty of room for everyone, from tents to the massive RVs. The pool very clean and never gets over crowded. Staff are knowledgeable and polite. Friendly/quiet dogs allowed. Wonderful pirate ship playground. Weekend activities for the kids. Electric golf carts allowed. Very inexpensive compared to campgrounds closer to me.

    Coon Creek (IL)

    Beautiful campground with amenities

Great campground. We really enjoyed it here. We got a pull thru 100ft site with full hookups and it was so nice. Gravel looked brand new, and brand new concrete pad for the fire pit. The picnic table was in great condition and xtra large too. My table cloth was too small. Not really any area of the campground to shore fish, but bring a boat and this site is for you. Plenty of room for your rig, vehicles and a boat. The beach for swimming was the kids favorite part.

    One of our favorites!

This is one of our favorites. It’s close to home for us but also, very clean with nice staff and a fun environment. The pool is a huge plus, it’s so incredibly nice. There’s a small game room and little camp store with firewood and ice. The sites are kind of close together but they’re clean and have nice fire pits and tables. The campground is well cared for. We went 4th of July weekend and they even had a golf cart parade and through candy which was so fun for our son. We’ll always visit here.

    Coon Creek (IL)

Big Campground with great lake access

I have camped here in a motorhome with full hookups and tent camped as well.

The camp sites are divided into many loops and have side pullin sites and backin sites. The RV and tent sites are grouped in the same loops and there are many that have trails from the site right to the lake and people leave the boat near the campsite but still on the water. The restrooms and shower houses are clean as all the Lake Shelbyville campgrounds are maintained by the Corps of Engineers. This campground is very busy in the prime camping season, but if you are camping with a group and have a boat this is the place to go. There are several buddy sites here that are set up very well for groups of RV's and tents camping together. There are a few isolated sites on corners of loops, but most are fairly close together. There is a swimming beach here and lots of boat traffic, but quiet hours are observed, so you can get a good night's sleep before an action packed day on the lake. The fishing is good if you have a boat, but there is very little bank fishing areas available. Part of the campground is open after Labor Day, but the main season is Memorial day to Labor day.

Guide to Decatur

Cabin camping options near Decatur, Illinois range from lakeside to wooded settings. Many campgrounds surrounding Decatur are situated along man-made lakes, with most cabin rental facilities open from April through October. Sites at major recreation areas like Clinton Lake and Sangchris Lake offer varying levels of seclusion, with temperatures typically ranging from 60°F to 85°F during peak season.

What to do

Fishing access: Clinton Lake State Recreation Area provides excellent fishing opportunities with unusually warm waters. "Clinton Lake is a boating destination as the waters are unusually warm due to the discharge from the nearby nuclear plant," notes camper Stacia R. Sites in the J loop offer convenient shore access for families staying in cabins.

Swimming options: Lake Taylorville City Campground offers basic cabin accommodations with marina access. "The marina is small and basic. Actually everything is basic here but it's still great to have 10 minutes from home," reports Jana C. Most cabins are within walking distance of swimming areas.

Trail exploration: Cabins at Wolf Creek State Park Campground provide access to hiking paths that follow the shoreline. "Hiking path all around the shore of the lake. Some hidden fishing areas but we didn't have any luck," writes Melissa B. The park maintains several miles of trails suitable for day hikes from cabin sites.

What campers like

Lake proximity: Many cabin sites at Sangchris Lake State Park offer direct water views. "Hickory Point on the lake and Deerrun in the woods. Both great at different times of the year depending on wind and temperatures," writes Lucas T. Cabins at Hickory Point provide the best lake access with private fishing spots.

Playground facilities: Parents appreciate the family-friendly setups at several cabin campgrounds. "It does have a great play area but nothing else for kids. Good shower houses. Surrounded by nothing but trees and stars," notes Jessica D. about Sangchris Lake. Most cabin sites are within walking distance of playground equipment.

Clean facilities: Coon Creek receives consistent praise for maintenance. "The restrooms and shower houses are clean as all the Lake Shelbyville campgrounds are maintained by the Corps of Engineers," reports Michael M. Cabins typically have access to these shared facilities unless they include private bathrooms.

What you should know

Reservation timing: Peak season cabin rentals fill quickly at popular locations. "Clinton Lake is a large campground that gets booked up most weekends," warns Stacia R. For summer cabin reservations, booking 3-4 months in advance is recommended, especially for lakefront units.

Seasonal closures: Most cabin facilities have limited availability between November and March. "Water was turned off for winter which wasn't entirely clear. The RV fill was shutdown too," notes Matthew I. about off-season stays at Clinton Lake. Always verify available amenities when booking outside peak season.

Site spacing: Cabin density varies significantly between campgrounds. "The sites are divided into many loops and have side pullin sites and backin sites," explains Michael M. about Ramsey Lake State Recreation Area. Some areas offer more privacy than others, with corner sites typically providing the most seclusion.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming beaches: Several parks offer designated swimming areas near cabin sites. "They have a beach and a concession stand, group camping areas and lots of roads to bike around," mentions Stacia R. about Clinton Lake. Most beaches operate from Memorial Day through Labor Day with varying hours.

Activity options: The Kampground (formerly The Last Resort) provides restored cabin facilities in a former church camp setting. "The bathrooms were really clean, property well maintained, staff was extremely nice and hospitable," reports Jay M. The property offers ample space for children to play without disturbing neighbors.

Weather considerations: Summer heat often requires cabin cooling options. "In the dog days of summer the breeze is blocked by the trees so get an electric site even with a tent and bring a fan," advises Marisa A. Most basic cabins have electricity but lack air conditioning, making portable fans essential during July and August.

Tips from RVers

Loop selection: Different camping areas offer varying experiences for visitors. "The different loops have very different feels...some are very shaded in the trees, some more open with a prairie type view," explains Stacia R. about Clinton Lake State Recreation Area. Some loops are designated as alcohol-free zones, creating quieter environments for families.

Shower facilities: Quality varies between campgrounds, with some receiving better maintenance than others. "Bathrooms/showers are very clean & decorated nicely," notes Cynthia K. about Springfield KOA, while another campground received criticism: "The bathrooms were dirty and weren't cleaned until Friday." Always check recent reviews when shower access is important.
