Equestrian camping opportunities near Dalton Gardens, Idaho extend beyond the established facilities at Farragut and Riverside State Parks. Located in Idaho's northern panhandle at approximately 2,100 feet elevation, this region offers abundant options for horse owners through both dedicated equestrian sites and multi-use campgrounds. Trail networks through ponderosa pine forests provide seasonal riding from spring through fall, with summer temperatures typically ranging from 75-85°F.
What to do
Trail riding at Riverside State Park: The park features wide, well-maintained bridle trails suitable for various riding skill levels. According to Gary M., "This area accesses many miles of hiking/biking/horseback trails along the scenic Spokane River, but the campground itself is reserved for equestrians. There is also an arena, round pen, and trail training course a quarter mile up the road from the campground."
Lake activities near Liberty Lake Regional Park: Located 25 miles from Dalton Gardens, this park offers swimming and fishing opportunities after trail rides. Steve M. notes, "It runs between 35 to 75 a night to stay there ranging from camping to full RV hookup. However, it is very close to Spokane and has beautiful hiking trails, a beach where you can swim and kayak and canoe and fish, birds and wildlife around singing beautifully day and night."
Mountain biking from Breakwater Campground: This primitive camping area serves as an entry point to regional dirt trails. One camper states, "Great tent camping. Also, it's a great starting point to some really good dirt bike trails. Be prepared for no cell service. 0 amenities. It's just a place to pitch a tent and have a fire. And it costs nothing."
What campers like
Private sites at Liberty Lake: While close to urban areas, campers appreciate the park's natural setting. Joel R. reports, "We spent 3 weeks at Liberty Lake Regional Park while visiting our son and grandkids in Spokane. The road in is a little narrow, but once in, it's a great little campground... There were deer in the campground every day, we saw moose, owls, pilated woodpecker, and hawks."
Clean facilities at Bonner County Fairgrounds: Located north of Dalton Gardens in Sandpoint, this campground maintains well-kept amenities. Carol J. mentions, "Great place to stay. Nice back in sites with picnic table. Electric and water at site. Dump station close. Easy bike ride to Sandpoint with lots of bike paths. Bathhouse and showers clean. Price great at $25 a night."
Horse training facilities at Riverside Equestrian Campground: Riders value the dedicated equestrian amenities. As Keila C. describes, "This place is such a well put together establishment, it has the most beautiful breath taking sceneries. It also seems like the perfect atmosphere to really be able to bond with your horse, so you both can be comfortable while being trained together."
What you should know
Limited amenities at Breakwater: This campground offers primitive camping without services. Lane P. explains, "This campground stretches along a tributary of the CdA river, and there is great tent camping and fly fishing. Downside is that there is limited vehicle access to most spots."
Site size considerations at Kootenai County Fairgrounds: When making reservations, check site dimensions carefully. Joseph advises, "When checking online, and that's where you must reserve your site, there is a very good map with the site lengths listed. Our number 1 site was over 60 feet long and large for our 34 foot long 5th wheel and our Chevy truck."
Summer conditions at Liberty Lake: Summer heat can be intense without natural cooling. Adam B. reports, "Nice cozy camp site. Can be a bit crowded but is nice here. Cell service is solid att and Verizon. Nice hiking and cycling trails. Lake looks pretty but didn't go in. Was very hot here in July with no wind."
Tips for camping with families
Educational activities at Round Lake State Park: This park offers educational programs for children. According to Heather M., "The camp visitor center has a cool place for kids to learn about the wildlife in the area with foot prints in sand, bird calls, samples of the different types of trees and more. They also have boards to rent and games as well."
Swimming options at Round Lake: The beach area provides family-friendly water access. Jason S. notes, "The swimming area is nice with kind of sandy beach, but there is a bit of seaweed in the swimming area. There are also two docks perfect for fishing. I had a great time casting off from them and even caught a couple of crappies and trout which was a nice bonus."
Spacing at Liberty Lake: Sites vary in privacy and size. Annika W. advises, "I stayed in the tent part of the campground, and the sites (especially the first few) are awfully close. This is a great campground for camping with friends but I don't recommend it for a quiet getaway."
Tips from RVers
Hookup reliability at Kootenai Fairgrounds: The campground offers full services with stable connections. Rick Shannon P. shares, "This place was very well kept and very friendly campground host. This place is big rig friendly. I stayed in a 45 class A motorhome with a tow vehicle. I had no problem with the access to the rv park. If you are coming off of interstate 90, don't use exit 13. The round about is way too small to handle big rig or any camper. The best route is exit 12 big rig friendly."
Site length considerations at Liberty Lake: Roads and sites have size limitations for larger rigs. Angel A. cautions, "It has paved/gravel roads. The road in was kinda sketchy if you are pulling a large RV. It is surrounded by a heavily wooded area that is very beautiful and well kept up."
Dump station location: When planning departure at Liberty Lake, factor in the dump station distance. Joel R. mentions, "The dump station is quite a drive, back out, up the hill."
