Ponderosa Campground

River access draws anglers and paddlers to this forested campground along the Secesh River in Payette National Forest. Ponderosa Campground features ten sites accessible by vehicle, with boat-in access also available for those arriving by water. The facility provides drinking water and pit toilets, though one reviewer notes inconsistent water availability and recommends bringing a filter as backup.

Sites sit within a mixed conifer forest where campers can spot fir and other native trees. A trail across the road follows the river, offering opportunities to forage for wild huckleberries and strawberries in early July. The campground operates year-round with fees ranging from free to $10 per night. Reviews consistently highlight the clean facilities and lack of aggressive wildlife attempting to raid food supplies.

Dennis A. describes it as a "beautiful campground with hot showers and flush toilets," though this appears to reference a different facility with the same name. The actual Ponderosa Campground near Yellow Pine offers more basic amenities but provides direct river access. Nearby options include Secesh Campground just 0.2 miles northwest.

Campers should note this differs from Ponderosa State Park near McCall, which offers more extensive amenities but requires a two-hour drive from this location.

Right on the river!

This is a beautiful campground right on the Secesh River and right across the road from a trail that takes you on a hike along the river. I found wild huckleberries and strawberries on this hike in early July. This is a newer campground than the Secesh horse camp which is across the road. However, don't mistake it for Ponderosa State Park which is 2 hours away in McCall and has way more amenities. This site has water, a pit toilet, and ten sites.

Great place for families and dogs

What a great place to spend time with your family! Clean bathrooms, easy hook ups, and a warm Visitor’s Center all made our cold, damp camping trip a success. This place has easy to access bike paths, beach/lake access, and is only a few minutes from town.

nice clean cg

I stayed here one night. It was a weeknight and very quiet - only one other site was occupied. The pit toilets were clean. There were no squirrels or other critters to try to steal my food! There is no water available there, so either bring your own or a filter.
