Reaching Loon Lake requires a 4.4-mile hike from Chinook Campground, which serves as the last water and restroom stop before the trailhead. No amenities exist at the lake itself. The site draws hikers curious about the wreckage of a B-23 Dragon Bomber that crashed on the far side of the lake in 1943, though locating it involves bushwhacking and creek crossings. Campers willing to pack in everything they need for free camping near Payette National Forest will find solitude here most nights.
