Nice Campground
I have been to Red Top Mountain countless times, but haven’t ever camped here until today. The campground is nice, signs are easy to follow, camp sites are in nice shape and the bathrooms are clean. Over all great campsite

Red Top Mountain State Park is an incredible spot for a camping getaway. I love campgrounds that offer both nature and comfort, good hiking trails, a peaceful lake, and hot showers are definitely a win. The fact that they have rental cottages and yurts makes it a great choice for people who want a more relaxed camping experience too. The only thing I’d be cautious about is those narrow roads, but once you're set up, it seems totally worth it. If anyone needs to sort out travel plans to get there, you can always call Avianca customer service for flights.
This isnt for backpackers but for camping with your family, its good. They have water and outlets and very very clean bathrooms. Like cleaner than a Publix bathroom. Kid friendly.
Red Top Mountain State Park is beautiful and Lake Allatoona is large. Campsite 50 is a premium tent only walk-in site (a few dollars more). It sits on a point that sticks out in the lake. There is no shade or tree cover, so it's not "private". There are 3 other sites near by on the walk-in area and there are no boundaries or barriers between so your neighbors are in full view. There is no electric near the tent pad, the electric pole is 150+ feet away near the parking area. You probably could run 175 feet of electric extension cord... but it would have to run past the three other sites... so don't plan for electric. There is water right by the pad with a ton of pressure. The tent pad was large but extremely hard to drive tent stakes into... smaller stakes worked better. The bathhouse was an uphill hike probably 300 ft away but was modern and clean with hot showers and good water pressure. The park is clean and scenic. The staff is very courteous, friendly and helpful. There are plenty of opportunities to hike, fish and boat.
This park is about 30-40 minutes outside of Atlanta right off of I-75. If you are in a tent... you will hear I-75 traffic all night so keep in mind, that while it looks like country, you are not deep in nature... the drone of the highway will remind you. There is a train that blows its whistle that will wake you up 3 times each night and also remind you that you are not deep in the woods. The winding roads through the park outside the campground also seemed to be very popular with motorcyclists who like loud pipes.
The name Red Top Mountain is derived from the red soil in the area that was popular for the mining of abundant iron ore. But don't look for "mountains" here... you have to travel further north for more dramatic elevation.
Overall, a nice park, pretty scenery but not as secluded, quiet and relaxing as expected for tent camping.
Recently stayed a couple of nights and was mostly impressed with the state park. I’m a tent camper but if I had an RV or trailer, I would definitely have trouble getting into my site (78). Many of the other sites I saw would have similar problems for trailer campers, as well. The park is in close proximity to I-75, so I could hear the distant sound of big rigs and the occasional police sirens. There is also railroad tracks somewhere that are close enough to hear train whistles in the wee hours of the morning. But the scenery of Lake Alatoona was beautiful and the staff I dealt with were all friendly and helpful. The bathroom facilities I used were very clean.
The campground is quiet with well laid out sites. I stayed in site 02, which is a pull through site with full hookups. Everything was clean and well maintained. I camped at Red Top regularly when I lived in Georgia 28 years ago. I’ll definitely be returning.
Be careful about arriving on time. There is a gate with a code, if you don’t arrive when the camp office is open, you’ll be stuck outside. Signage is highly confusing, it took two competent adults a lot of back and forth to figure out where our campsite was. But once you get here, it is absolutely gorgeous. Scenery is amazing. It has modern facilities and a beautiful lake to explore. Highly recommended.
I loved this park. Beautiful, we’ll maintained. The best shower of my camping experience so far! Hot water and great water pressure- what a treat! The only con is the roads are a little confusing and tight and the sights are pretty unlevel. But the sights had plenty of room. I already planning to come back!
Friendly staff and hosts. Lovely tree’d and peaceful campground. Visible had about 12 dwn and 16 up. Roads: narrow pavement with trees - challenging towing-and we’re only 30 ft fifth wheel. Getting into site 77 was seriously challenging. Would return if I could get site 1 thru 12
My husband and I camped here in our tent, husbands 1st camping trip. We absolutely loved this camp ground. We're already reserving for our next trip. This place is AMAZING.
Wow. No need to wonder which is the “best site” here. Gorgeous setting, new bathrooms, and so much to do!
We went here to meet up with family from out of state. Great affordable and updated cabins with close by parking for campers. Beautiful hiking loops with beach access for swimming. They are doing lots of construction on the camping loops so sites are limited but what was completed looks amazing! New yurts looked close to being ready.
It was excellent. The waterfront sites are prime. We had site 51 and if we went back (which we hope to) we would get site 51 again. Great water access directly from the campsite with a small beach. Surprising amount of space between this site and the neighboring sites. The only downside to this site is the walk to the bathroom is up a steep stretch of road. Said bathroom was Airbnb status clean.
I've camped here a bunch of times and have always enjoyed it. The sites are spread out and there are a lot of areas to explore.
We came during a snowstorm once and it was a great time!
This place is beautiful! They are doing a ton of construction right now and updating a lot of the campground. The first several spots are full hook ups and huge campsites. Be cautious coming into the park, the bridge is very narrow! I lost a driver's side mirror on the drive in because a truck coming at me in the opposite direction hit mine with his.
Pros - BEAUTIFUL spot. I was on the uppper back loop (standard site) but I still looked down into the lake. The spots are well spaced out. And there is LOTS of work going on - updating the sites, updating the bathrooms.
Cons- It was a little sketch getting in there. The road is pretty narrow. I had a 24' travel trailer and I was sweating driving in. Also, I have no idea how they expected me to make the turn onto my loop. I ended up backing into a spot across from the road and that worked but if someone would have been camped there? no idea. also, back into my site was a challenge. Had to back up a hill and there are quite a few trees on the other side. But I still got it done, and am so glad i did because it was a magical spot.
Also the picnic table and fire ring were on the back side...which was odd.
We stayed at one of the primitive sites here last year. This year they have had areas closed at times for renovations. This year we chose to book one of the pull through sites because we weren’t sure what the weather would be like right after Christmas. We were in site 3. These sites look like they were redone during the reno - nice level gravel sites, nice spacing between sites, and they now have sewer hookups! This was a nice surprise that wasn’t included in the site listing on the reservation site (very useful since we dewinterized here). If you don’t book one of these sites, it’s also good to note that they COMPLETELY redid the dump station! Last year it was barely a hole in the ground right near the entrance/exit. They now have TWO stations with a nice new concrete pad, rinse water and trash cans. So much better than before! Very pretty park - we hope to stay more than just overnight someday.
Beautiful campground!! The bathrooms were very clean and nice!! Would stay again!!
This campground is very pretty, nice hiking. Park is on a man-made lake and there are Corps of Engineer campgrounds just down the road. When we were there much of the park was torn up and under constuction. It is not trailer friendly at all. Roads are very narrow and have steep drop offs on the sides. There is a new area with full hook-up and drive through sites which is adequate for any trailer or RV, but beware of the other parts of the park. We have a 30 foot fifth wheel and pickup.
Upon arrival or site was very well situated on the top of the mountain overlooking the river. Fantastic view. Our camp site was number 54. Picnic table, round fire pit and tall pole with two hooks to hang lantern and or other items like trash. Our site was extremely clean and in fact the entire camp area was clean and very well kept. The sweet gum trail is a lovely quiet and easy trail, very relaxing. I can see why this place has such great reviews, everything you want in a camp site. We camped in late October so the temp was mild to chilly during the day, got a little cold at night with a low of 48, not too bad but our particular spot was on a hill and the winds caught us often so that made for the temperatures feeling colder. If you forgot to pack something there is a easy drive to a Walmart or a Publix. We did not have any neighbors so that made for an even more relaxing and quiet trip. The actual camp sites are a bit close together but I dont really see that as too big of an issue. The people that did camp a few spots down from us were quiet and everyone seemed respectful of others. The comfort stations are clean and also well maintained. I was impressed with the entire site.
Beautiful and quiet camping on the water! Campgrounds are clean and well kept with friendly keepers. We loved our camping trip and thoroughly enjoyed the trails and walking trails that cut through the campground Iron Hill.
Beautiful sites but we gotta there at 5.... Told open till 10. Visitor check in closed and no directions on how you get in. Campground ended up being a few miles from check in. We weren't given coffee to get in gate.... Signs once in were one way but you couldn't tell where they wanted you to go. Lots of vehicles going wrong way and nowhere to pull off.
Most of the spots are distanced a good ways from other sites. They are a little close to the paved path for my taste though. Plenty of restrooms. Fairly clean and quiet park.
Great place with beautiful view of the lake. Clean facilities.
I just stayed one night in May, but the entire area is beautiful. I saw lots of deer and squirrels. The facility was undergoing renovations, so the restroom facility near my campsite was closed. There were plenty more within walking distance. I would definitely recommend
Camp site was easy to pull in , picnic table was on one side and fire ring was on the other, which once you settle down, the view was nice. Two site over, neighbors were loud but the neighbors on the other side were quite.
Red Top is a great local campground on Lake Allatoona. It has plenty of sites although a lot of the water front are tent only. The bath houses are updated and clean. Makes for a great weekend trip.
This campground is easy to access off the I-75. With some shopping close if the case is needed. The grounds are clean and the beach accesses to the lake are very friendly. The security is adequate, many trials for hiking and the boating entrances are several. There are new cabins being built, with other vintage ones also available. A wonderful place to spend a few days to week at.
This is a beautiful campground. As others have mentioned, the roads to get to the sites are narrow and windy. We have a 21’ van and we didn’t have any issues, but I was very glad we got to our site during the daylight. I would not want to drive the roads after dark. We stayed in a primitive site (51) so we could have more privacy and better views. Site 51 does not disappoint! Keep in mind there are no hookups at this site, and anything longer than our van may have trouble backing into the site. This would be an amazing tent site! From a practical standpoint, you will need to buy a parking pass - even though I received an email telling me I could go directly to my site and check in by phone, they wouldn’t let me buy a pass on the phone so I had to head back out to the park store to buy a pass. Other than that, great park.
Red Top Mountain State Park campground was awesome. The sites were fairly large, wooded and private. Many were positioned right on the lake. The trails in the park were great for hiking and running. We enjoyed visiting the Qualusi Winery that was nearby.
