What to do
Visit nearby attractions: The campground provides access to several regional points of interest. "Stayed here mostly to visit Rigby's and the aviation museum. My girlfriend loved the horses - different ones are coming and going frequently. My 6 year old had a great time with the other kids and pond and playground," notes Luke A. about Fair Harbor RV Park.
Explore forest trails: Camp in proximity to Oconee National Forest for hiking opportunities. "48 acres of camping surrounded by Oconee National Forest! There are also 2 full hook up RV sites available. Ten miles from Jackson Lake and canoeing opportunities along Ocmulgee River," explains a review from Big Country Camping.
Fish without a license: Some parks offer private fishing opportunities. "A private [stocked] lake that toured welcome to fish, without needing a license," notes Desiree R. describing the amenities available for guests seeking recreational activities during their stay.
What campers like
Clean, accessible facilities: Campers consistently mention the well-maintained bathrooms and shower facilities. "These people do it all right from clean convenient bathrooms to a lovely park atmosphere even though RV slots are fairly close together... Did i mention the bathrooms were sooo nice & clean with all the helpful details like nice tile seat in each shower and more?" shares Cassandra A. from Fair Harbor RV Park.
Quiet rural settings: Many appreciate the peaceful environment at smaller campgrounds. "Very nice owners. Very quiet and peaceful location. I had a full hookup site. Owners helped me get situated. Loaned me a water hose. Felt very safe here. Beautiful sunrise. Excellent cell signal which is important since I work remotely from my camper," reports James from Big Country Camping.
Farm animal experiences: Camping alongside farm animals provides a unique experience. "The RV Park is located just outside from Dexter Georgia and about 7 min from I-16. Surrounded by goats, horses, Cows and Peacocks makes this an ideal family camping experience or for someone who wants to escape from the daily stress," writes Andre E. about Two Horse Wagon RV Park.
What you should know
Weather conditions: The region maintains relatively warm temperatures throughout most seasons. "It was nice and warm even in December! Almost 70 degrees! Spot with a nice horse trail to hike - saw some deer and a mystery black animal, maybe a boar or a bear - unsure," reports SJ W. from Ocmulgee River Camp.
WiFi limitations: Internet access varies significantly between campgrounds. "WiFi here is so-so and you often get booted off. On there website they say WiFi is free with stay. But once we got there we learned we were capped at 1 GB per day. You can buy more for $15," notes Kelsey G. describing connectivity challenges.
Road conditions: Access roads to some campgrounds may require caution. "Very bumpy on the drive in but no major holes. Quiet and peaceful 2 neighbors great amount of space to find a nice spot," explains J A. about navigating to camping areas.
Tips for camping with families
Playground amenities: Look for campgrounds with recreational facilities for children. "This place is HUGE!! As others have said, the sites are a little close together and there's some traffic noise, but neither bothered me very much. They have a little convenience store with camping gear you may have forgotten (or didn't know you needed!), souvenirs, food, and other essentials. The bathrooms are nice and there are some on-site fun to be had with a basketball hoop and playground," explains Danna D.
Swimming options: Some campgrounds offer swimming areas for family recreation. "Lake Sinclair was nice to view, but there are only a small handful of sites right next to the water. Overall it's a nice view, the beach area is small and wasn't the best swimming because the water was muddy due to recent storms," notes Moe B. from Lake Sinclair Campground.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Kids can enjoy observing local wildlife during their stay. "Beautiful campsite, just a few neighbors, tons of flat space and a few fire pits. There are hunters around and we heard a good deal of shots. Saw some deer on a walk. It was quite hot but surprisingly not that buggy," shares Julie H.
Tips from RVers
Level sites: Many campgrounds provide well-prepared RV parking areas. "This has to be the easiest check in and set up ever! The site was both long enough for our rig AND level..a rarity in our experience," reports C.G.T. appreciating the convenience of properly leveled sites.
Full hookup amenities: Look for campgrounds offering comprehensive services. "We stayed here for one night on our way to Savannah. The grounds were well kept and it felt very comfortable. The FHU pull throughs are spacious and easy to manage. This is country camping; with goats and cows right next to you," shares andrew from Two Horse Wagon RV Park.
Storage options: Some facilities provide additional services for extended stays. "Absolutely love Fair harbor! The staff is great, they have a little store that sells amenities and lots of basic camping gear. Have 24 hour laundry, multiple showers with amazing water pressure... Also horse stables and storage if you stay longer!" notes Desiree R.
