What to do
Trail riding opportunities: Explore the West River Trail that runs through the park alongside the 17-Mile River. "This little jewel has everything you need for a great time. Plenty of good walking trails and a great petting zoo. I love the old houses, it gives you a feeling of what it was like 100 years ago," notes Jennifer H. about General Coffee State Park Campground.
Heritage farm visits: Purchase animal feed at the visitor center to interact with farm animals. "We have gone to this campground a couple of times now and every time we go it has been a great visit. We love buying carrots to feed all the farm animals and if you want some good exercise rent one of the pedal boats," shares Kirsten W.
Fishing access: Fish in the small pond near the heritage farm or access the 17-Mile River via a gravel road from the picnic shelter area. "The lake is big enough to boat around in for a little while and there are fish to be caught- carp from what I could tell," explains one camper who visited recently.
What campers like
Spacious campsites: Many sites offer ample room for horse trailers and equipment. "We had site #12 which was gigantic. All the sites are open to your neighbors," reports Rachel G. about her stay at General Coffee State Park Campground.
Clean facilities: Campground maintenance receives consistent praise from visitors. "Bathrooms are always spotless. Nice paved roadway. Gravel sites all of them pull through. Large private sites," says Michael R.
Wildlife interactions: The rural setting provides opportunities to observe and interact with animals. "Humble and super hospitable super friendly people they've got baby goats donkeys horses chicken that roam free during the day and at night the donkey keep predators away so it's super safe and quiet if you don't mind the roosters," explains Theresa B. about her experience at Big Mike's Ranch and RV Camp.
What you should know
Seasonal conditions: Summer months bring heat, humidity, and insects. "Because it's near the swamp, it is hot, humid and buggy. Bring your thermacells," advises one camper about General Coffee State Park.
Facility limitations: Equestrian sites lack shower facilities. "The camp restrooms are adequate but not at all ADA accessible at campground #1. There are 3 toilet stalls, 2 that have working latches, and 2 shower stalls- both with working latches," reports Kayla S. about the facilities at General Coffee State Park.
Access considerations: Road conditions may affect travel to certain horse campgrounds near Adel, Georgia. "There were quite a few potholes on the road, coming back into the campground," notes Lisa M.
Tips for camping with families
Heritage farm activities: Children enjoy feeding and interacting with the farm animals. "The farm is always fun for the kids. Great place for bike rides too," shares one regular visitor to General Coffee State Park.
Rental equipment: Families can rent pedal boats or kayaks at the small lake when facilities are open. "On our visit there were 3 day old lambs!! Can fish in small pond and rent peddle boats or kayaks but this pond is very small. This is a great place for 3/4 days," advises Rachel G.
Extension cords helpful: For tent campers, some sites have electrical hookups positioned far from tent pads. "The electric box is a little further from the tent pad than most sites I've stayed at, so I was happy that I brought an extension cord," notes Kayla S.
Tips from RVers
Site selection cautions: Large rigs should choose sites carefully due to tree placement. "Be careful about some of the pull through spaces as there are trees that might make it difficult for longer RVs to get into. Our space was nice and level, had water and electric," warns Lisa M.
Dump station location: The sanitary dump station is visible from some campsites. "This site is the first site to the right when you pull into the campground. There are trash cans at the campground exit and a direct line of sight view of the dump station," explains one camper about site #1.
Hookup availability: Various levels of hookups are available at equestrian campgrounds near Adel, Georgia. "It's 2 nights free $10 after with no electric or stay primitive for however long and 15 a night electric I believe," shares Theresa B. about pricing options at one local ranch.
