Hikers and waterfall enthusiasts will find extensive trail networks radiating directly from Cloudland Canyon State Park Campground, with connector paths leading to the park's signature 600-step descent to Cherokee and Hemlock Falls. The campground divides into two distinct areas: the East Rim loop sits along the main park road with 24 sites offering direct canyon views but limited privacy, while the West Rim features 48 more secluded sites nestled among mature trees.
The West Rim emerges as the preferred choice for many campers seeking a woodsy atmosphere. Steve V. notes the sites here are "in a wooded setting, shaded, and slightly separated," with some offering personal connector trails to the main hiking network. Sites range from spacious family-friendly spots like sites 4-9 to unique features such as site 37's impressive climbing tree. All sites include water and electric hookups up to 50 amps, gravel pads, picnic tables, and fire rings.
The bathhouse facilities, while functional and cleaned daily according to multiple reviews, show their age. jessica O. found them "tidy, stocked, and heated" but noted they "could use a deep cleaning." Laundry facilities are available, though some machines may be temporarily out of service. The park office sells firewood bundles, though several campers report better success purchasing from local suppliers who deliver directly to sites.
Access requires navigating winding mountain roads that can become challenging in wet conditions. The campground stays busy year-round, with Lee D. arriving on a Tuesday in November to find only four sites available among the 72 total spots. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially for the more private West Rim sites. Train whistles provide occasional nighttime ambiance, though most campers find the sound less intrusive than at other regional campgrounds.
This campground works best for active campers who prioritize trail access and don't mind older facilities, with the West Rim suiting those wanting more seclusion and the East Rim serving visitors focused primarily on canyon exploration.
Description
Resting on the western edge of northwest Georgia’s Lookout Mountain, Cloudland Canyon State Park is more than 3,000 acres—one of the state’s largest parks—of rugged geology, and offers visitors hiking, camping, rock climbing and more along the park’s most iconic feature: the deep gorge cut through the mountain (elevation varies from 800 to more than 1,800 feet!) by the Sitton Gulch Creek. Multiple waterfalls and cascades, including the uber-popular Hemlock Falls, can be found throughout the gorge, making this park feel like a hidden gem around Lookout Mountain.
Staring at the geographic anomaly isn’t the only thing to do at this park, however. Beyond the countless miles of hiking, biking and horse riding trails, geology fanatics can find rock climbing, rappelling and spelunking across the park—cave tours are even offered for beginning cave explorers at Sitton’s Cave.
The park holds a massive variety of camping options, including 72 spots suitable for both tent and RV campers, 30 walk-in sites, 13 dispersed sites, 16 cottages and 10 yurts, each in a different area of the park. With this many options, campers can find seclusion all around.
