What to do
Trail riding opportunities: Riders at Wilderness Landing can explore interconnected forest paths within Blackwater River State Forest. "It's located right on the Blackwater River and has a boat launch and two pavilions with tables and barbeque grills right on the beach. The river is sand bottom and fairly clear," notes Stealie F.
Fishing access: Multiple fishing spots available at Geneva State Lake with dedicated structures for anglers. "Beautiful park to camp next to the lake with 2 fishing docks. No bathrooms just port a potty. The camping price is $2 per night, no reservation is needed, and is online payment," reports Vand H.
Explore hiking routes: The forest offers both equestrian and foot-traffic trails throughout the region. "There are 2 hiking trails - more like atv trails that go to either side of the lake from the campground. You can go further into the forest but it was deer hunting season so I didn't explore," shares SJ W.
What campers like
Budget-friendly options: Free camping available at certain horse campgrounds near Crestview, Florida. "Good spot for free. Clean showers/toilet building. Pavilions and grills by the river," mentions Salvador G. about his experience at Wilderness Landing.
Peaceful environment: The remote nature of these equestrian facilities provides quiet camping conditions. "Want to be away from it all - this is the place. Grass sites, some shade," explains Ken R. about his stay at Peaceful Camping in the Woods.
Wildlife viewing: The natural setting offers opportunities to observe local fauna. "Level ground, dry, lots of deer. We will return!!" Christopher M. notes about his experience camping in the wooded areas.
What you should know
Limited connectivity: Remote forest locations mean limited telecommunications access. "So well maintained, it is way back in the woods. Cell service was on the struggle bus the whole time, but overall this is a great little place," reports Terran B. about Coldwater Equestrian Campground.
Variable ground conditions: Terrain can affect camping setup and comfort. "The site was extra super sandy (beach sand) and would be a lot better if they removed some of it," explains Jennifer P. about site #56.
Access road challenges: Some locations require navigating unpaved routes. "Beautiful views, clean restrooms, and free. Other campers were very friendly. The only reason for a 3 is the rough drive getting there," shares Donna G.
Tips for camping with families
Ranger interactions: Children can benefit from staff interactions at equestrian facilities. "Very friendly staff especially the Rangers. Faye (one of the rangers) is great. We had our 3 year old granddaughter with us and she came by at least twice a day to give her a ride on the golf cart and printed of pages she could color on rainy days," Jennifer P. reports.
Water recreation: River access provides swimming opportunities for family members including pets. "My big ol' malamute 'Stealie' loves the river! The best part is it's FREE! For up to 14 days," shares Stealie F.
Primitive campsite selection: When choosing non-developed sites with children, look for level areas. "Parked in a clearing with 2 5th wheel renters on it...walked back into the woods along a trail and chose one of several camp clearings. Level ground, dry, lots of deer," notes Christopher M.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at some equestrian campgrounds. "Note - I drive a 20' van - so non level is ok for me but these sites were not level - but I spent 2 nights sat/sun - and it was gorgeous especially for sunrise," explains SJ W. about Hidden Lake Resort.
Weather considerations: Monitor forecasts when camping at locations with dirt access roads. "Wish I could have stayed longer but I didn't want to get stuck there in the rain - it was about 5 miles of dirt roads to get in there and they were well maintained but I didn't want to risk it," cautions SJ W.
Hookup availability: Campgrounds offer varying levels of services for recreational vehicles. "The best part is it's FREE! For up to 14 days," notes Stealie F., adding "It's not on the big side of campgrounds but still has some of the amenities. No hookups at the campsites but there is running water (hot and cold) in the bath house with flushing toilets."
