Mutual Mine Campground — Withlacoochee State Forest

Loud engine noises but otherwise secluded

This is an excellent place to camp because it is secluded with large private campsites surrounding a clear swimming hole. It is a short drive from the Chaz, and affordable. The hosts were extra friendly. Downside is no pets or alcohol, and weird gloomy roar of airboats or some other loud engine after dark nearby. We also camped next to someone who was blasting country music and speaking loudly well past midnight, but that is a risk of campground camping, bring earplugs.

    The Griffin Ranch

    Old-Florida Charm Meets Ranch-Life Calm

Arriving to Griffin Ranch just outside Fort McCoy feels like stepping into a page of classic Florida history, where 30+ acres of shaded woods, ponds, pastures and trails invite you to slow down long before you ever unpack your bags. The ranch’s cabins, Airstream camper and cottage rentals, each with antique-inspired interiors, set the tone for a timeless, unhurried stay. The accommodations are rustic in the very best way: solidly built, thoughtfully equipped spaces that feel cozy rather than pretentious, and the hosts are genuinely welcoming, making you feel like part of the ranch family rather than just a guest. During our visit, we watched the kids wander out toward the pasture at sunset, chasing fireflies and laughing at the horses’ gentle nickers, while the sun dipped behind the trees in that golden light only old pastures seem to have. While this isn’t a ‘back-to-barebones’ campground in the primitive sense, it is more of a cabin-centric ranch stay than a full-service campground, so if you’re coming with a big RV or tent setup in mind, you’ll want to book one of the on-site cabins instead of relying on typical campsites. The best lodging options are the cabins tucked deeper into the woods or near the ponds, which offer the most serenity and EZ access to the ranch trails and wildlife watching. Nearby you can easily stock up on supplies in Fort McCoy or make short drives to local eats like Rocco’s Italian or a long list of options in nearby Gainesville.  Also, the closeness to Ocala National Forest and Silver Springs makes this a great base for exploration. We’d recommend Griffin Ranch for families who appreciate quiet evenings under ancient oaks, authentic old-Florida ranch character, space for kids and pets to run wild and host hospitality that turns a simple stay into lasting memories. This place is one part history, one part nature retreat and entirely welcoming.

    Pine Island RV & Marina

    Waterfront Bliss on Lake George

If your idea of a magnificent campsite includes the opportunity of waking up to an endless blue horizon eclipsed by the sinking sun at dusk, then look no further than this very quaint, out-of-the-way boutique lakeside gem. Located on the outskirts of the Ocala National Forest, Pine Island RV & Marina offers up 9… that’s right, count‘em up, just 9… lakefront RV slots. IMHO, the best spots are #1 and #2 or #7… but hey, EVERY SINGLE SLOT faces an unobstructed view of blue bliss, so you’d be lucky to get any one of these waterfront vistas. Let’s just say, book your slot early as the pickins’ are slim here.

Jennifer, the on-site manager, who has served this wonderful little outpost for the past 3 years was nothing short of sweet, helpful and very informational. She informed me when we visited that the entire place is in ‘upgrade mode,’ but I was quick to inform her that the views needed no improvement. Look for an expanded general store, where today you’ll simply find a billiards table, stand-up bar in one corner, while the rest of the store is lined with camping gear, basic groceries, toiletries, sundries, snacks, cold beverages, games, books, fishing gear, etc.

Amenities: Waterfront RV Sites, RV Rentals (they have 3-4 to choose from), Marina, Boat Slips, Boat Ramp, Camp Store, Bait Shop, Wine & Beer Bar, Kayak Rentals, Recently Remodeled Bathrooms & Shower Facilities, On-Site Laundry, Ethanol-Free Fuel, Firewood and Camping Supplies, Billiards, Corn Hole, Outdoor Area w/ Picnic Tables, Grill, Fire Pit. Individual Sites include Fire Rings, Picnic Tables and 30 / 50 electric Amp.

Insider’s tips? Here’s a few: (1) With only 9 waterfront slots to choose from, you want to book as early as possible; (2) While there is a proper boat launch, you will note that while Lake George is the second largest lake in all of Florida, it is also one of the most shallow, meaning that if you’d like to launch right in front of any one of the camping spots, you can, but you definitely want to be wearing some aqua socks or something as the rocks here are both slippery and sharp; (3) When you get tired of trying to figure out what the next meal is and don’t want to turn to your cooler or on-board mini-fridge for the solution, then you are going to be hard-pressed as there really isn’t too much in the way of ‘foodie paradise’ out in these parts – the nearest restaurants include: El Amigo Mexican Restaurant, Mystic Bistro, La Esperanza Mexican and Palmeras, but all of these are just mediocre (at best) – the only place we did find that was definitely worth it, albeit a 30 minute drive from Pine Island RV & Marina, is Drifters Riverfront Bar & Grill, which has typical glorified bar food (think burgers, wings, sandwiches, fried everything, etc.), but their seafood offering was actually pretty dang nice; and (4) If you are on the lookout for decent trail hiking, then head back from whence you came to discover Lake George Conservation Area, where there’s some decent, albeit non-descript trail hiking to be had.

    Happy Camping!

    Idlewild Lodge and RV Park

    Amazing little gem!

Found this beautiful quiet little resort while taking an airboat tour. The owners are simply amazing. They went the extra mile to make sure everything was perfect for our stay. The cabins are some of the nicest and cleanest we have  ever staid in. High quality furniture, beds/bedding, and amenities. They have multiple fire pits, a beautiful pool, and great food truck on site. Also they have a boat to rent and great fishing all over the lake.  Literally can’t say anything negative about this place. Food was terrific, hospitality was on another level, and over all just perfect!

    Highland Park Fish Camp

    Fantastic Family Destination!

I have been visiting Highland Park Fish Camp for over 8 years. I was sold the first time I went. This family run location has bee in operation for over 50 years and is working on their 4th generation! They offer 50 sites with full hookups (some 50 amp), tent sites and hot showers. They also just added to the number of cabins they have. There are fire pits and picnic tables at tent site and outside of cabin area there is a nice community fire pit area. Bathrooms are kept clean.

There is a free catch and release pond that is kept well stocked and a great place for the kids or beginners to learn how to fish. You will often see yellow labs strolling or lounging by the office Ruger and Copper - they are super mellow and love getting a scratch or pet.

You can rent a pontoon boat, bass boat for a half or full day and explore the rivers and lakes connected to the camp. Freshwater fishing anywhere along here is just amazing! Lots of wildlife including manatee, shorebirds, bears and more can be seen. You can hire a guide to take your out or you can go on your own. It is only $5 to launch your kayak or canoe here.

Camp store has nearly all the equipment you would need for a fishing trip including live bait (crickets, shiners, worms, etc) There is a huge, covered cleaning station for preparing your catch of the day. You will also find frozen treats, soda, water and other snacks. Ice can also be purchased.

recently they have expanded their "Hammock" special event area. There is a stage, lots of seating, tables, & outdoor lighting making this a great place for group or special events. There is an outdoor wedding chapel area and many folks from all over the state come here for a rustic wedding.

They really make you feel welcome here and right at home. I hope you get a chance to check out this wonderful location!

Guide to Anthony

Silver Springs State Park and the surrounding Anthony area offer yurt camping and cabin options amid natural Florida landscapes and freshwater springs. Located in Central Florida at approximately 70 feet above sea level, this region features year-round warm temperatures with summer highs averaging 90°F and winter lows rarely dropping below 50°F. The area's limestone foundation creates crystal-clear spring systems that maintain a constant 72°F temperature.

What to do

Kayaking Crystal River: Only 90 minutes from Anthony, Crystal River allows close wildlife encounters. "Nearby there is an awesome rock beach, Manatees, and a walking path through wetlands," notes a visitor at Encore Crystal Isles, highlighting the natural attractions beyond the immediate Anthony area.

Hiking prairie trails: Paynes Prairie Preserve offers multiple trail systems with wildlife viewing opportunities. "This park has 8 trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. We were able to see wild horses, bisons, snakes and gators," reports one camper at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park Campground.

Birding Orange Lake: The wetlands around Orange Lake provide excellent bird watching opportunities. "A perfect place to enjoy fishing, wildlife and the Florida Birding Trail," mentions one visitor to Sportsman's Cove Resort, noting the area's inclusion on official birding routes.

What campers like

Large, private sites: The spacious campsites at Silver Springs State Park provide ample room between neighbors. "Wonderful large private sites. Showers, laundry, store, restaurants and glass bottom boats and canoe, kayak rentals. Equestrian section also," says John R. about Silver Springs State Park Campground.

Free water activities: Several resorts include complimentary water equipment. "The boats & kayaks are free for campers. You just have to sign one out at the office," reports a visitor to Lake Waldena Resort, adding that they have "a large pavilion & 2 wooden docks- one with a covered seating area."

Outdoor creative space: Yurt camping near Anthony provides unique gathering environments. "Artists and musicians are highly encouraged to visit. You'll wish you came sooner," notes a camper at Grateful Hammock, which offers yurts and cabin accommodations with artistic elements.

What you should know

Seasonal occupancy patterns: Many campgrounds fill with long-term residents during winter. "This is a 55+ RV park. But we saw families with children here. They have sites for the camper to stay a few nights or sites for staying here permanently," explains a visitor to Silver Springs RV Park.

Bug preparation: Florida's climate means insect activity year-round. "Hot with skeeters the majority of the year, cold overnight in the winter," warns a Paynes Prairie visitor, suggesting bug spray as an essential item.

Pet restrictions: Not all trails allow dogs. "The biggest disappointment for this state park is that all of the things they advertise (and I was looking forward to) - bison, horses, wildlife - are all on trails where pets are not allowed," cautions one Paynes Prairie visitor.

Tips for camping with families

Glass-bottom boat tours: Children enjoy seeing underwater life without getting wet. "The glass bottom boat tour is an absolute must, we had such a wonderful time and the boat captain had lots of interesting information. We have a 4 year old and a 10 year old and they both really enjoyed the boat tour also," shares a visitor from Silver Springs State Park.

Kid-friendly campgrounds: Look for resorts with dedicated children's areas. "They have a great pool, hot tub, clubhouse area... Kids play area, Ice Cream Stand, Food trucks sometimes, Volleyball," mentions a camper at Encore Crystal Isles.

Educational opportunities: Ranger-led activities provide learning experiences. "We did the Ranger led hike which was really nice, my 5 year old struggled to keep up with the Ranger and there are decent elevation changes," notes a visitor to Paynes Prairie.

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: Choose sites based on size and location preferences. "Some RV sites are a challenge to get into, some are larger. They prioritize based on the size of your rig mostly," advises an RV camper at Encore Crystal Isles.

Full hookup availability: Most parks near Anthony offer complete services. "We had a really nice extended stay here. The lots are very spacious and well kept," reports an RVer staying at Grand Lake RV & Golf Resort, noting the quality of the facilities.

Arrival timing: Early check-in may require planning. "We were able to get 2 nights in a pull thru site w full hook up. Large sites with ample separation from your neighbors," shares an RV camper who made reservations just days before arrival at Silver Springs State Park.
