What to do
Feed the bison: Visitors at Terry Bison Ranch can take a unique train ride to feed these massive animals. "The train to view and feed the Buffalo was really cool. Restaurant was also excellent. Friendly staff!" reports Barbara F.
Explore Poudre Canyon: Located within driving distance of Fort Collins North-Wellington KOA, this scenic area offers multiple trails accessible for equestrian use. "We spent 2 nights in our RV and a full day driving Poudre Canyon and it was perfect just for that," shares Angie G.
Attend live events: Evening entertainment options create a community atmosphere for horse campers. "Wednesday night they had open lic with live music. Bar had good selections of alcohol including some expensive wines. Great service," notes James R.
What campers like
On-site dining options: The steakhouse at Terry Bison Ranch receives positive mentions for its bison specialty items. "Ate at Senators Steakhouse and had buffet, including beef prime rib, bison ribs and bison burgers," says James R., while another camper notes it was "absolutely fresh and delicious."
Clean facilities: Despite proximity to livestock areas, maintenance standards remain high at some locations. "The office, laundry and bathrooms were absolutely spotless! The staff was very accommodating!" notes Angie G. about her experience at the Wellington KOA.
Outdoor amenities: Family-friendly features enhance the camping experience. "Clean, well-kept campground with full outdoor kitchen, pool and play areas. The staff were extremely kind. One of the best KOA's we have stayed at," shares Megan E.
What you should know
Agricultural environment: Horse campers should expect typical farm conditions. "It's near a ranch, so there are some animal smells and quite a few flies. We also had a lot of earwig bugs at our site," mentions Ben H. about the Wellington location.
Site maintenance varies: Quality can differ within the same campground. "Neat idea behind the campground. Was VERY dirty - trash all over the place. Did get a good walk around the campground. Staff was nice, area was nice. Sites are tight and again, very trashy," reports Ashley I.
Weather adaptations: Water systems at Terry Bison Ranch are designed for cold weather camping. "Full hookups, pull-ins, picnic tables, and the water pipes are protected against low temperatures. They offer air for your tires and have propane available for purchase," notes Penélope F.
Tips for camping with families
Multiple activities: Families traveling with horses will find other diversions available. "Lots to do here. Pet friendly. Laundry room, showers, market available. A steakhouse right next door. It's definitely gorgeous here," shares Anna C.
Playground access: Some areas offer dedicated children's facilities alongside horse-friendly amenities. "New playground equipment was nice, and the store was well stocked. Try to get one of the spots closer to the playground side as they seem better maintained," advises Ben H.
Site selection strategy: Request specific locations when making reservations for equestrian camping. "Dusty but that was pretty much only bad thing, campsite close to each other but thanks goodness for friendly neighbors," reports Victoria G.
Tips from RVers
Overnight conveniences: Short-stay equestrian campers appreciate efficient services. "We dry camped in our rv, and used our generator. They allowed us to use a dump station on the way out at no charge, and we topped off our potable water as well," shares Josh R.
Site leveling challenges: Some locations require additional preparation for horse trailers and RVs. "RV site not level at all. Picnic table covered in bird poop, tree branches hanging low our TT barely fit under them," warns Chris M.
Last-minute availability: During peak seasons, some equestrian camping options may still have openings. "We were extremely happy to find a site on Labor Day wkend with full hookups. The workers are very helpful. The laundry was excellent," notes Steve G.
