Redwood groves and mixed forest cover this hilltop county park positioned between the Santa Clara Valley and Monterey Bay. Mount Madonna County Park sits at elevation in the hills between Gilroy and Watsonville, offering RV sites with hookups and tent camping across four distinct campground loops.
The forest creates multiple microclimates throughout the park. Morning fog often rolls through the redwood sections, creating what one camper described as the trees "harvesting the fog and making their own rain." Temperatures run significantly cooler than the valley floor—up to 40 degrees difference according to reviews—so extra layers prove essential even during warm weather. Sites on the outside edges of each loop provide more privacy, while inner loop positions place campers back-to-back with neighbors.
Miles of hiking trails wind through the property, connecting different forest types and offering views toward both the Santa Clara Valley and Monterey Bay. Dogs accompany hikers on all trails within the park, a feature that distinguishes it from many other regional destinations. An archery trail with 28 targets threads through the woods for those seeking a different outdoor challenge. Near the ranger station, visitors can view white fallow deer, descendants from William Randolph Hearst's former exotic collection.
April N. notes that facilities stay well-maintained: "Bathrooms have soap & TP and kept clean." Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and food storage locker. RV sites accommodate rigs up to 31 feet with water and electric hookups. A free dump station sits conveniently near the park entrance. Cell service remains limited throughout most areas, though some signal reaches the dump station area.
The park gates close at 8 PM, eliminating through traffic noise during evening hours. Reservations book well in advance for summer weekends, while off-season visits often provide more solitude among the towering trees. For additional camping options in the region, see camping near Gilroy.
