Valencia's surrounding areas offer diverse equestrian camping options between 1,500-5,700 feet elevation in the Angeles National Forest and Topanga State Park. Weather varies significantly across seasons, with summer temperatures reaching 90°F during day and dropping to 50°F at night. Several campgrounds accommodate horses with access to extensive trail networks through chaparral and oak woodland terrain.
What to do
Trail riding from Horse Flats: Connect to numerous trails near this campground at 5,700 feet elevation. "There is mostly bouldering in the area, with some trad stuff. Plenty of sites!" mentions Kathleen L. about the surrounding recreational opportunities at Horse Flats Campground.
Explore abandoned sites: Visit the abandoned structures near Reyes Creek Campground. "The abandoned town is a 3 minute walk from camp and really interesting. Some camp spots are right on the creek and the running water is a peaceful background noise for your trip," notes Chelsea B.
Archery practice: Try the archery range at Tapo Canyon Park. "There is archery with lessons for kids on the weekends. Very fun! If you are new to RV camping, it's a good place to practice," says Sam & Amy inc. L. The range operates Saturdays from 9am-1pm for $5.
Creekside hiking: Follow the creek trails at Bear Canyon Campground. "Follow the creek (which is GORGEOUS with waterfalls and shade in the spring) and go all the way to the end," recommends Shannon E., noting that trail conditions can vary seasonally.
What campers like
Solitude and disconnection: Many equestrian campers appreciate the remote feeling at Halfmoon Campground. "We were looking for a more remote place to camp and this site satisfied all our needs. We were the only ones there and the scenery was pleasing," shares Antonio C.
Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness varies across locations. "In fact, every subsequent campground toilet facility I now compared to this one because it was so clean!!" reports Bower about Tapo Canyon Park's well-maintained facilities.
Short hiking distance: The convenient location of Musch Trail Camp appeals to many riders. "Park for $7/night at Trippet Ranch and hike one mile to the campgrounds. It's an easy hike and very quiet," mentions Andrea A., highlighting the accessibility for horse owners.
Family-friendly amenities: Campgrounds with additional activities are popular. "The campground has a lush grass area and nice covered playground. The showers and bathrooms are nice," reports Bri B. about facilities at Tapo Canyon Park.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Connectivity is restricted in most horse camping areas. "No cell service once you're in the campgrounds," warns Cierra M. about Tapo Canyon Park, while April Y. notes at the same location, "DO NOT expect cell service. I could only work from this spot by placing my mobile HomeFi router on top of the camper."
Tent vs. RV considerations: Some sites better accommodate certain camping styles. "For actual tent camping, you will be in either decomposed granite or concrete," warns robherr about Horse Flats Campground, adding "I have camped here in a tent and there is no way to drive a stake into the ground."
