    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Loafer Creek Horse Campground at Lake Oroville State Recreation Area features horse corrals specifically designed for equestrian campers. The campground provides year-round access for horse owners looking to explore the park's extensive trail system. Located near Oroville, approximately 30 miles from Paradise, this campground combines equestrian facilities with standard amenities including drinking water, trash disposal, toilets, showers, and a sanitary dump station. The campground remains relatively quiet, with users reporting only a few occupied sites even during peak seasons. Campgrounds are clean and include picnic tables, fire pits and plenty of shade with water pumps located near the sites.

Trail access from the campground connects riders to paths surrounding Lake Oroville, though water levels can vary seasonally. Most campsites aren't perfectly level, so proper trailer positioning may require some adjustment. The lake is accessible via a mile-long walk to the boat ramp, with beach areas located approximately two miles from the campground. Recent construction improvements have enhanced some facilities, though the distance to water access remains unchanged. Riders should be prepared for hot conditions during summer months, as the area offers limited natural shade on many trails. The campground's location provides good access to surrounding wilderness areas while maintaining basic amenities necessary for horses and their owners.

Plumas National Forest Snake Lake Campground

      Rustic clean free

Forest Service campground in Plumas NF I’ve stayed at several times when exploring the area. About 9 miles from Quincy and 2-3 off highway. Free. Fire rings (need annual campfire permit, free at park offices) and bear boxes. Outhouses. No water apart from lake (generally overgrown). Large clear sites with plenty of space between them. Forested area, dirt roads. Equestrian sites available.

      Soldier Meadows Campground

Sleep amongst the pines, not the tourists!

Just a short drive down a forest service dirt road and you'll find yourself at Soldier Meadows---a gem of a campground! Located just 15 minutes from the oh so popular Lake Almanor, Soldier Meadows is a peaceful campground nestled among towering pines and a babbling brook. The campsites are huge, with lots of room to spread out. There is no water at this campsite, but if you bring your filtration system you can get water just steps away from your campsite. One pit toilet is located at the front of the campground. My mom and I camped here for a couple of nights as we were doing so day hikes on the PCT, great base camp. You are only 20 minutes from the town of Chester if you need to run in for a milkshake or more beer, you know the essentials! This is not a fancy campground by any means, but with no camp host there, it all seems a bit more peaceful ;)

      Black Rock Campground

      Really poor condition

Despite the beautiful Joshua trees this campground is not a great to stay. The roads are in terrible condition, trash is strewn throughout, and staff is less than friendly or helpful. Roads are terribly narrow and sites are small and very uneven. Not a great place for a trailer nor class A. No direct access to park via road. Is next to neighborhood

Bidwell Canyon Campground — Lake Oroville State Recreation Area

      Campground on Lake Oroville

If you are looking for a small campground with full hookups, on the lake, close to Table Mountain and Feather Falls, this is for you. We picked this campground for its location, but got so much more. The campsites aren’t huge or very level, but the fact that it has full hookups for $45/night, is small, and on the lake made up for that fact. We don’t have small children, but think it would be a great place since there wasn’t a lot of traffic driving through the campground. A couple of downsides were that the water in the lake was very low and the showers are token operated. Tokens can be purchased from a machine outside the shower house, but it only takes bills (no coins), so have your ones and fives ready. Table mountain was in n full bloom in April and we enjoyed Kayaking on Thermaliro Forbay. Feather Falls was closed due to fire damage.

      Rolling Hills Casino Truck Lot

Easy access, clean facilities, level 75' pull through spots

We enjoyed an overnight stay here. Clean facilities, well maintained grounds and friendly neighbors. Conveniently located just off I-5, far enough away from the noise. Casino, restaurants, doggy daycare and golf just next door. Sites are level 75 ft pull through sites. We will stay again. Lower numbered sites are closest to amenities.

Loafer Creek Horse Campground — Lake Oroville State Recreation Area

Most of the sites were not very level

There were several groups partying loudly well after midnight , and the water was nearly a mile walk to the boat ramp and almost 2 mikes to a “beach” that was closed. New construction might make some of this better, but unless something drastic changes I’m scratching this one off my list.

    Guide to Paradise

Loafer Creek Horse Campground provides equestrian facilities in the scenic foothills of Northern California, approximately 30 miles from Paradise. The campground features horse corrals within the Lake Oroville State Recreation Area at an elevation of about 900 feet. The Mediterranean climate creates mild winters and hot summers, with temperatures often exceeding 90°F during peak camping months.

    What to do

Trail riding near the lake: At Loafer Creek Horse Campground, trails connect to paths surrounding Lake Oroville. "Sparse campground and hot. But good sites and great location," notes Ethan T., who appreciated the "great walk to the lake."

Fishing opportunities: Whitehorse Campground at Bucks Lake Recreation Area offers good fishing access. "Clean campground, great fishing, and nice trail around lake. Kids love camping here," shares Erin C., who found the campground well-maintained despite its remote location.

Kayaking on reservoirs: Water activities are popular at several campgrounds near Paradise. At Sly Creek Campground, camper Renee A. reports: "We enjoyed our camping trip immensely and enjoyed getting into our kayaks and on to the water. We took some video footage as well. There was a great fishing but we didn't catch anything."

    What campers like

Spacious sites with shade: Horse campgrounds near Paradise, California often feature well-spaced sites. "The campsites are clean and include picnic table, firepit and plenty of shade. Water pumps near the sites," explains Bonnie M. about her stay at Loafer Creek.

Wildlife viewing: The area provides opportunities to observe local fauna. At Black Rock Campground in Lassen National Forest, camper Alissa C. shared: "We saw some salmon, deer, quail, and frogs. There was evidence of bears around our site but we didn't have any issues."

Quiet, uncrowded atmosphere: Many equestrian camping options near Paradise remain relatively uncrowded. At Bidwell Canyon Campground, Jessica P. found it "nice and quite! There wasn't many people at this site. It was very relaxing. And the views are nice. Rangers were friendly as well!"

    What you should know

Bear safety is essential: The Paradise region is bear country, requiring proper food storage. Sarah J. advises at Whitehorse Campground: "Just do what they say- and keep your food stuffed locked up. Head the warnings- right? The bear, after speaking to the host, is well known locally. They have watched it grow up."

Water access varies seasonally: Lake levels fluctuate throughout the year. Amy at Bidwell Canyon notes: "Clean campground, efficient check in. Lake is not walking distance, no internet. Great place for a quick stop over."

Site levelness challenges: Many equestrian camping areas have uneven terrain. As Chris M. observed at Loafer Creek: "Most of the sites were not very level," which can require adjustments when positioning trailers and setting up camp.

    Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly fishing spots: Several horse campgrounds near Paradise offer accessible fishing for children. "There are some nice places to fish that are just a short walk from the campsites," notes Alissa C. about Black Rock Campground in Lassen National Forest.

Consider seasonal timing: Summer heat can be intense in this region. Sean J. advises about Bidwell Canyon: "The campground would likely be better in late September/October," after experiencing 108°F temperatures during a summer visit.

Look for educational opportunities: The area offers learning experiences for children. Patricia O. shares about Bidwell Canyon: "The Lake Oroville Visitor Center has a small museum and exhibits. Staff there were wonderful too."

    Tips from RVers

Accessibility considerations: Rolling Hills Casino Truck Lot offers convenient RV facilities near Paradise. Gary R. notes: "Sites are level 75 ft pull through sites. We will stay again. Lower numbered sites are closest to amenities."

Road conditions for larger vehicles: Some forest roads require high-clearance vehicles. Kaye S. warns about Black Rock access: "The road in took about an hour and a half and I would not recommend attempting it without 4WD and high clearance. There is one stream crossing but it is minor."

Hookup availability: Full hookups are limited near Paradise. At Rolling Hills, Katrina C. shares: "Only $55 for a full hookup that's a pull through. $50 for Good Sam Members," making it a practical option for RVers needing utilities.
