Usal Beach Campsites — Sinkyone Wilderness State Park

    Soggy but passable

At least in Dec, very muddy. Would not advise without 4x4 and some experience.

We got here in an unmodified 2000 ford explorer with traction tires, but it was near that rig’s limit.

Would be a lot more comfortable with some recovery gear

    Close to downtown

Plus side is that it’s very close to downtown & camp host was great. Lots of old rundown RVs and junk lying around. Good for an overnight stop but would not stay long term.

    Safe and quiet

We were there at first with just a couple rvs there. By the end of the four days - it was filling up and was still quiet. The showers were nice. Ferndale is a gorgeous old Victorian town and you are still close to eureka and don’t underestimate the safety factor.

    Awesome Spot

Definitely an underdog beach campground! It is very hard to find anything online. But this spot is amazing. Its as close to a dispersed spot as you can find with just a few amenities. I guess I was the first one who wanted to share the spot, I added it to the app for you all!

    Beautiful location with excellent staff

Located in the city limits mere minutes from just about anything you may need and very centrally located for many sea shore and forest park locations.  Some nearby attractions include Eureka Historic District with many beautifully maintained Victorian Homes. You can Journey through forest, dairy land and Elk country to other beautiful locations like Ferndale and Crescent City.

    Samoa Boat Ramp County Park

Basic and little expensive for what you don’t get

First experience wasn’t to good. Tried it one more time for the benefit of the doubt. But The place is just a big parking lot, with some fire pits and a few tables at some of the sites. It’s super loud there late into the night and absolutely nothing secluded about your site. People were walking through our area the whole night.

Great secluded beach - 4WD needed!

Campsite is about 40 mins off rt 1 - rock/dirt roads up and down the hills until you get to the beach. Once you’re there though, PARADISE!! Totally worth it - camp in the little forest before the beach or right on the sand, shack toilets available but other than that pack in and pack out!

    Hidden Gem

Beautiful little campground bordering a secluded beach. Its about an hour and a half to drive through some pretty windy roads through the mountains once you get off the highway, but very pretty. The road can be pretty intense/unpaved at times so would recommend 4WD or AWD vehicle

    Beautiful area - terrible crowd

Really beautiful campground. I've now visited a few times, and every time I've gotten little sleep because of the partying. Keep coming back because of the scenery and the great mtb trails, but be prepared for people blasting terrible music all hours of the day and night. Plus the fireworks, loud trucks, and guns going off at all hours of the night. Feels like camping in the movie Mad Max...

    Its a pretty parking lot

The samoa dunes is a beautiful spot and they do have bathrooms and showers available. $25 per night. Price isn’t bad but for not having hookups of any kind it’s just alright.

Great free dispersed camping, sheltered but by the beach

Great camping with quite a few spots both in the aspens and in the grasslands by the beach. It was pretty buggy, and a long dirt road getting in, but as long as it's dry and you've got 4x4 you should be fine. Sites have quite a bit of trash, remember to pack out what you pack in.

    Richardson Grove RV and Campground

Our annual 4th of July campsite

Been camping at Richardson Grove RV Park for the past 20+ years. It’s a large campground and great for large groups our group is usually about 60+ people :). Having the gas station right next to the campground is great since you ca. Go buy anything you need / run out of such as sodas and beer oh and ice also. During the July hot days we like to cross HWY 101 and go take a dip in the eel river. The campground has bathrooms and showers but over the years the maintenance have dropped

Nothing fancy, but convenient to Ferndale, and quiet

I stayed here twice for a total of eight days. Many long-term Residents give the place a seedy feeling. Ultimately it is safe and secure. And well managed. The bathroom is clean, heated, free showers and the combination is changed weekly. Large grassy area with good spacing between most RVs. I was in the middle of the campground for short term parking. Because of recent rains and some soggy areas I had to overnight campers close to me. 30 amp and 50 amp power and water at each side. The largest downside to this place is the RV dump station inside the fairgrounds. It’s the worst one that I’ve ever used. It needs to be completely rebuilt. No ultimately it did work. Great location to the picturesque town of Ferndale California. Also a convenient location for exploring the Lost Coast area. 12 miles away from Eureka California which has a Costco and Patriot gas station on the south end of town has a car wash that can accommodate RVs.

    Humboldt County Fairgrounds

Good place for a few days

Plenty of room for all RV’s large to small. 30 & 50 amp power and water. Clean restrooms, heated and free. Many long term residents. The spots are level, it felt safe enough. Quiet. Close to Ferndale, which is Must See. Access from Fernbridge of of 101 as the other roads are very twisty for all but the smallest RVs. Camp host was great! Short drive into Eureka. Patriot Gas has a car wash for big rigs. Not really a photogenic campground. Very open area surrounded by fields with cows, farms and trees in the distance. Used the RV dump as I left. It’s by far the worst RV dump that I’ve used. It works, but needs a complete rebuild. I suggest requesting a spot with full hookups.

    “Rustic”

If you aren’t looking for anything fancy, and by that I mean lots of mud and ruts and sketchy broken down rv neighbors, you’ll be fine. Another reason this might ok for you is if there’s an event and lots of other folks are there, like during the fair. We came here in November 2021 with an A class. My recommendation is “don’t do it” unless you have a beater, it won’t handle the pot holes in this teenie park, you might be allowed to stay in the paved fair parking lot though. If it’s a late model RV, you’ll stick out like a sore thumb, at least when we were there in winter.

    Water 360 degrees

For a boat ramp camping site near town, this place is special. Remote from town but water 360 degrees. You can hear the ocean while looking at the towns across the water. I didn't use the facilities but location is awesome.

    Worth the white knuckling

One of the coolest campgrounds I’ve ever visited (once my stomach settled from the steep, narrow, rocky, nerve-wracking 50-minute ride in). We stayed up top, apart from the actual campground, where the view was spectacular. The fog was magical.

Off the beaten path, yet crowded

On a weekend in august it was packed. Most camped on the beach, which was the reason I came, yet we ended up finding a spot inland with no neighbors. The road coming in is no joke, it took about 30-45 minutes on a bumpy dirt road. Even with 4x4 I would be hesitant to drive during heavy rain but when dry it’s passable by car. During a week day I think this place would be fantastic, but during a busy weekend it wasn’t a quiet get away by any means. 90% of the campers were fine but the other 10% are usually who gets a whole campground a bad name. Its what’s to be expected when you combine free state park camping with no policing. If you’re into “overlanding” this would be a great place to take a pic for instagram and pitch your roof top tent. I enjoyed myself a lot but I may be more relaxed about the riffraff than others. I have no good pictures but it was truly a beautiful place.

    Mattole Campground

    Stunning

The campgrounds are pretty open, with little privacy, but that’s not what you’re there for.

The drive is intense, but manageable in good weather in a fwd Mazda 3. Mattole Rd from Weott is far better in terms of the road condition, but Mattole Rd to Ferndale is absolutely breathtaking. I wouldn’t attempt either with a large rig or trailer.

The lost coast is absolutely breathtaking. You’ll get 4 seasons of weather in a day, so plan accordingly. A short walk outside of the campground reveals incredible scenes.

The campgrounds are first come first serve. We snagged the last spot around 3PM on a Tuesday afternoon.

THERE IS NO WATER. Pack in what you need.

Five star place , One star nieghbors

This place is absolutely beautiful. But… lots people( this place has so many site we couldn’t even count them all, loud( bad ) music , loud trucks driving recklessly, Children crying, drunk folks whooping and hollerin into the wee hour of the night, dogs barkin and fighting, poop all around the camp site conveniently left unburied with the paper, trees used for ax throwing practice, tent stakes driven into trees, unattended fire pits smoldering , fire pits filled with garbage, fireworks, chainsaws running at all hours. Oh and let’s not forget the Gun fire on Saturday night then this is the place for you! Awakened Friday morning at 8 am to Nas x at volume 11 echoing the length of the valley was not in our plan but … we got very adept at setting up and breaking down camp as one is left with the impression your stuff might not still be there if you left it out and went for a hike Every night it was pack it all up and lock the car before bed

Basically this trip was a lesson in how crappy people can be in the forest

The few good parts Chorus of frogs in the evening Elk sleeping twenty feet from our camp site And meeting Jackie and Brea the world traveling dogs ( seriously these two pups have been to like six different countries) Jackie is maybe ten pounds and fearless, she saw the elk and was ready to chase it down as she had never seen one before

    Beautiful Beach Camping

Easy to find and easy to drive into.

It was windy when we arrived, but that died down in the early evening through the night. We were able to take several walks down to the beach with our dogs, you have to be careful near the sites because there are foxtails.

The campground became full pretty quickly, but it didn’t feel crowded. I think many people backpack from the campground.

    Bathroom was clean enough.

There were bunnies and quails near the berry bushes.
