What to do
Gold panning history lessons: Visitors can try gold panning at Coloma Resort, where you'll experience a taste of California history. "If you ever want to experience the thrill of gold panning, and California history go here! You will not strike it rich, but with a couple hours of effort you can get a nice little bottle of gold flakes to take home with you," reports one camper.
Waterfall hikes: At Sly Park Recreation Area, campers can access several scenic trails. "Nice beaches to hang out at! Kayak and paddle board rentals make exploring the lake relaxing and fun! And the hike to the waterfall is fun and easy for all ages," notes a visitor. The waterfall trail is approximately one mile along the lakeshore from the Hazel Creek day use area.
Water recreation: The American River provides multiple swimming and boating options. At Peninsula Campground, campers appreciate the lake access. "Folsom lake is a great place to take the boat, beals point has a snack bar, life guards and equipment rentals, there are plenty of places you can drive or boat to get away from crowds if you prefer."
What campers like
Private riverside sites: At American River Resort, visitors enjoy watching rafters navigate the rapids. "Campground was clean and well taken care of. It is right on the American River and next to a class 3 rapid called Trouble Maker. It was awesome watching rafters and kayakers go through it," shares one reviewer.
Seasonal variety: Spring visitors to Garden Valley enjoy different experiences than summer campers. "We visited this camp ground last year for a pre-spring getaway and really liked it. About 3 weeks later in March than last year so there were a few more people. The grass is green, and the leaves are out on all the oak trees which makes it more beautiful."
Fully-equipped glamping options: Glamping in Garden Valley, California provides various luxury accommodation choices. "This place was amazing. It was our first trip in our new RV and it couldn't of been more beautiful. There were super cute cabins available as well as tent sites. River was stunning and it was neat to walk across the bridge and check out the old historic mining town."
What you should know
Site spacing and selection: American River Resort campsites vary significantly in privacy and spacing. "Nearly all of the tent sites are tiny and crowded very closely together with no privacy breaks at all. To make it even more claustrophobic, many of the near-river sites are terraced into the hillside so you stand at the bottom and look up into a wall of tents stacked 3 high."
Campground maintenance: Facility upkeep varies between locations. At Finnon Lake Recreation Area, campers note spacious sites but environmental factors to consider. "Very nice area beautiful lake definitely recommend bringing ear plugs as the nature in the morning is a very early alarm clock over all a great site."
Weekend crowds: Summer weekends attract significantly more visitors than weekdays. "We loved the Pinecone Strip in the 30+ numbered sites. They have several water view sites and many others deeper into the area. Weekends book up quickly, but weekday camping is easy to find."
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly activities: Camp Nauvoo provides extensive recreation options for children. "The owners of this campground have made it their mission that you have a wonderful experience if you are a newbie or seasoned camper. Great sites for families and romantic sites for couples. Hiking, swimming, fishing and places for quiet time."
Water safety planning: The American River presents varying conditions through seasons. "It was fairly empty so that made it really nice as well. River was stunning and it was neat to walk across the bridge and check out the old historic mining town. We are going back in August and can't wait. Looking forward to rafting in the river!"
Plan for noise levels: Some Garden Valley glamping locations have active social scenes. "It's highly stimulating environment but everyone was very friendly. Quiet hours weren't enforced as people played music or loudly chatted until 1am the first night we were there. However, there's after hours staff you can contact if you have any concerns."
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: RV spots at some campgrounds require significant leveling. "The terrain is steep with mostly smaller sites. Water pressure is excellent. Our site had 30 amp only and I doubt any of them have 50 amp. I would be very cautious about coming here with a larger RV. Ours is 30' bumper to bumper. I think 32 would be ok."
Road access limitations: Some campgrounds have restricted access for larger vehicles. "Be aware that the road (Mosquito) going here is narrow and too winding. The old bridge can only accommodate one vehicle at a time and RVs and trailers are advised to take the Rock Creek Road instead."
Dump station protocols: RVers should understand facilities before booking. "Had a standard Hookup-RV-Spot. Was very uneven, couldn't get the RV level. If you don't have the premium hookup spots, you got to pay 20$ 'Service Fee' for dumping. The rest is nice, quiet (except for the geese) and clean."
