Best Glamping near Garden Valley, CA

Coloma Resort and American River Resort offer luxury canvas accommodations and glamping options along the beautiful American River in California's historic Gold Country. Just a short distance from Garden Valley, these resorts provide upscale outdoor stays with amenities far beyond traditional camping. The riverside glamping sites at Coloma Resort feature comfortable bedding, electricity, and private outdoor spaces. American River Resort complements its glamping accommodations with hot showers and well-maintained facilities. Both locations offer easy access to the river, with some glamping sites providing direct waterfront views. As one guest noted, "We loved the Coloma Campground. There were lots of amenities, group areas, large grass area by the river, lots of trails, cabins, a short walk across the bridge to the gold rush park and a great little restaurant for coffee and small plates."

The South Fork of the American River creates a scenic backdrop for these eco-friendly glamping destinations, with Trouble Maker rapids visible from American River Resort. Glamping guests can enjoy gold panning experiences at nearby Sutter's Mill, where California's Gold Rush began. The historic town of Coloma is within walking distance, offering dining options at the Argonaut for breakfast and lunch. Seasonal activities include whitewater rafting directly from the resorts during summer months, with OARS offering guided trips for glamping guests. According to a camper, "This place is north east of Sacramento. Coloma resort is what some friends call 'Glamping', but it's so much more than that. You can pan for gold, relax, or bike, hike along the river, and kids can play along several playgrounds for kids of different ages." Winter visitors appreciate the heated accommodations while still enjoying riverside trails and Gold Country exploration.

    Lake Francis Resort

    Fun cabin rental

Some of my family has camped here in the past at one of the tent sites. We decided this time around to reserve one of their cabins. We stayed at the Diamond P cabin which has the best view of the lake within this group of cabins. You can walk to the lake (it’s about 100 yards) from this location. Though it does fill up fast (by 11am it was pretty full). They have a large portable toilet there for use. We spent our time at the pool which is near the flushable toilets and the ice cream parlor, restaurant, and camp store. The pool goes from 3.5’ ft to 5’ back to 3.5’ ft.

The cabin was great. Two bedrooms, each with twin bunk beds and a full bottom bunk and twin above. Small bathroom with shower, mini fridge, hot plates, microwave, and dishes. Dining table and futon in the living area. Nice wide front porch to sit on and enjoy the view, communal tables and bbq for all the cabins. This unit also had a swamp cooler to help manage the heat.

Check in is 4pm and check out is 11am. There is also a small game room with a pool table, a baseball field, paddle boats, and kayaks to rent.

The down side is how quickly the easiest access to the lake fills up. Everyone has to drive over from the tent RV site to access the water. There are other places you can drive and park to get to the water, but there it a drop off into the water from there vs a gradual walk in.

    Acorn Campground

    Decent but concretized camping area

Not expensive and has bathrooms, garbage, fire pits and picnic tables but no privacy and unfriendly camping ground covered with gravel and few level places to comfortably pitch a tent. Many families here but some partiers till midnight and an idiot who ran his generator all night during quiet hours

    Inn Town Campground

    Unlike Any Other!

The Inn Town Campground is unlike any other campground I’ve ever been to. We have stayed in one of the glampinig tents, and have also brought our RV. The common house has a fully stocked kitchen so you can camp without having to bring supplies! The campground is exceptionally clean and meticulously maintained. We even had a heated mattress pad in our glamping tent to keep warm 😁 The owners, Dan and Erin Thiem, really have thought of everything. Staying with them is a must!

    Inn Town Campground

    In a word, excellent!

This campground has it all. It’s clean, has great amenities (pool, showers, kitchen, bathrooms), and it’s a nice walk away from town. It has a spot for everyone - RVs, glamping tents, and the standard tent sites (my style).

    Highly recommend!

    Inn Town Campground

    Great getaway!

We spent two nights doing a family and friends reunion. We loved our rv spot, the rest of the group had great tent site and glamping tents. Facilities were super clean and nice. Pool was small but the pool area was really nice. Great location for swimming in the Yuba river!

    Coyote Group Campground

    Coyote Group Camp

    • Large croup camp site with lots of flat places to pitch a tent. • Clean pit toilets. • 3x Bear food and 4x trash/recycling bins. • 2 (or 3?) water spigots • 4 big picnic tables • Some shade • Uneven terrain around sites and lots of fallen trees • Lots of parking, including triller/RV parking. Parking is paved and flat.

    • Walking distance to the river • Big fire pit

We enjoyed this site! Excellent for a big group. I think we had 18 people. There could an additional bear bin to support as much food/scented items as a group of 25 would need. We ended up using the extra bear-proof trash bins as overflow scented item/food storage. Worked well.

    Thousand Trails Snowflower

    SUP and kayak friendly

we found there to be a lot of rules at this campground such as no fires, however there is a community fire pit. No driving over 5 MPH, no charcoal grills or smokers, only electric and propane grills. They are also very serious about the 11pm quiet time.

Aside from all the rules this was a very clean, family and pet friendly campground. Very clean bathrooms with showers!! There are a few lakes that are very nice for fishing and kayaking. Nice calm water for a leisurely SUP experience.

    Tahoe Valley Campground

    Overall an ok experience

I’ll start by saying this campsite is huge , there’s like 400 sites so you got to keep that in mind when booking . We got a couple of the sites with electricity which were nice . No fire pits included because those are rented additional , lucky we had one from home . Firewood is $10 a bundle at the store so keep that in mind . The campground advertises WiFi but it’s ran from an separate company and service is extremely poor and slow so your better of using your cellphone data . This is a very active bear area with no bear boxes so keep in mind . We saw bears every single night roaming around and eating from the picnic tables . Some small , medium and extra large size . I recommend the tent sites better than the RV sites because they have a nice location and more private . The RV sites are just packed like sardines , some barely fit or stick out a few inches . Restrooms are clean and showers too . Funny detail the shower head is positioned for ADA handicap specs so you got to kneel down or seat to shower . The campground is located on the Main Street so it’s walking distance to stores or restaurants , I would go back but choose a better site on an outside loop more secluded instead of being in the middle of hundreds of rv’s

Guide to Garden Valley

Camping in Garden Valley, California sits at around 1,800 feet elevation in the Sierra Nevada foothills, placing it within driving distance of multiple water recreation areas. The summer climate features hot days reaching 90°F while nighttime temperatures typically drop to the 60s. Many sites throughout the area offer restrooms and picnic tables, with access to hiking trails along waterways.

What to do

Gold panning history lessons: Visitors can try gold panning at Coloma Resort, where you'll experience a taste of California history. "If you ever want to experience the thrill of gold panning, and California history go here! You will not strike it rich, but with a couple hours of effort you can get a nice little bottle of gold flakes to take home with you," reports one camper.

Waterfall hikes: At Sly Park Recreation Area, campers can access several scenic trails. "Nice beaches to hang out at! Kayak and paddle board rentals make exploring the lake relaxing and fun! And the hike to the waterfall is fun and easy for all ages," notes a visitor. The waterfall trail is approximately one mile along the lakeshore from the Hazel Creek day use area.

Water recreation: The American River provides multiple swimming and boating options. At Peninsula Campground, campers appreciate the lake access. "Folsom lake is a great place to take the boat, beals point has a snack bar, life guards and equipment rentals, there are plenty of places you can drive or boat to get away from crowds if you prefer."

What campers like

Private riverside sites: At American River Resort, visitors enjoy watching rafters navigate the rapids. "Campground was clean and well taken care of. It is right on the American River and next to a class 3 rapid called Trouble Maker. It was awesome watching rafters and kayakers go through it," shares one reviewer.

Seasonal variety: Spring visitors to Garden Valley enjoy different experiences than summer campers. "We visited this camp ground last year for a pre-spring getaway and really liked it. About 3 weeks later in March than last year so there were a few more people. The grass is green, and the leaves are out on all the oak trees which makes it more beautiful."

Fully-equipped glamping options: Glamping in Garden Valley, California provides various luxury accommodation choices. "This place was amazing. It was our first trip in our new RV and it couldn't of been more beautiful. There were super cute cabins available as well as tent sites. River was stunning and it was neat to walk across the bridge and check out the old historic mining town."

What you should know

Site spacing and selection: American River Resort campsites vary significantly in privacy and spacing. "Nearly all of the tent sites are tiny and crowded very closely together with no privacy breaks at all. To make it even more claustrophobic, many of the near-river sites are terraced into the hillside so you stand at the bottom and look up into a wall of tents stacked 3 high."

Campground maintenance: Facility upkeep varies between locations. At Finnon Lake Recreation Area, campers note spacious sites but environmental factors to consider. "Very nice area beautiful lake definitely recommend bringing ear plugs as the nature in the morning is a very early alarm clock over all a great site."

Weekend crowds: Summer weekends attract significantly more visitors than weekdays. "We loved the Pinecone Strip in the 30+ numbered sites. They have several water view sites and many others deeper into the area. Weekends book up quickly, but weekday camping is easy to find."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Camp Nauvoo provides extensive recreation options for children. "The owners of this campground have made it their mission that you have a wonderful experience if you are a newbie or seasoned camper. Great sites for families and romantic sites for couples. Hiking, swimming, fishing and places for quiet time."

Water safety planning: The American River presents varying conditions through seasons. "It was fairly empty so that made it really nice as well. River was stunning and it was neat to walk across the bridge and check out the old historic mining town. We are going back in August and can't wait. Looking forward to rafting in the river!"

Plan for noise levels: Some Garden Valley glamping locations have active social scenes. "It's highly stimulating environment but everyone was very friendly. Quiet hours weren't enforced as people played music or loudly chatted until 1am the first night we were there. However, there's after hours staff you can contact if you have any concerns."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: RV spots at some campgrounds require significant leveling. "The terrain is steep with mostly smaller sites. Water pressure is excellent. Our site had 30 amp only and I doubt any of them have 50 amp. I would be very cautious about coming here with a larger RV. Ours is 30' bumper to bumper. I think 32 would be ok."

Road access limitations: Some campgrounds have restricted access for larger vehicles. "Be aware that the road (Mosquito) going here is narrow and too winding. The old bridge can only accommodate one vehicle at a time and RVs and trailers are advised to take the Rock Creek Road instead."

Dump station protocols: RVers should understand facilities before booking. "Had a standard Hookup-RV-Spot. Was very uneven, couldn't get the RV level. If you don't have the premium hookup spots, you got to pay 20$ 'Service Fee' for dumping. The rest is nice, quiet (except for the geese) and clean."
