      Buena Vista Aquatic Recreational Area

Good spot to camp during a Road Trip

Camped here for a night to break up my drive from LA to SF. It was a nice campground, clean, bathrooms were functioning, but not super clean, had a picnic table, fire ring and you could park right next to your site. It was fairly crowded, but I was there on a Friday night.

      Kern River County Park

      Quiet and lovely

We stayed here just for a night on our way to Death Valley. It’s super convenient from Bakersfield and nice and quiet, by the Kern River. Clean and calm with some nice sites by the river. All have picnic tables and fire rings. The host was so lovely and let us stay for free in a site that had already been paid for (the folks had left early). We couldn’t believe it! So generous and kind.

      Long Meadow Group Campground

YES - Reserved this campsite ASAP!

I really loved this campsite. It's not too big and you get a lot of privacy and shade with the trees. There are bathrooms and a water spigot throughout the site which makes things a lot easier!

There is direct access to the river. We camped right at the riverfront so it was nice to wake up, step outside out tent and have my morning tea while watching the river flow.

There are pull up parking spaces to your designated site, a picnic table and a bear locker.

When it's warm you can go tubing in the river.

I'll be going back here in a couple weeks. Loved it!

Not too far of a drive from the town or Sequoia trees. :)

      Kern River County Park

      Paid vs not paid

For $32, you can get a site off the river and have a little camping pit and picnic table and you’re around other RVs and it’s good. I opted for locating a self created campsite in the area off the beaten path. It might not be allowed, but I was gone by 7 AM and I was super quiet. And I think that’s the thing if you’re super quiet and you’re gone early then probably not a problem. But if you’re planning to bring your camper to one of those secluded spots and making a lot of noise, then you may want to just get a $32 spot.

      Lake Isabella-Kern River KOA

      Very family friendly and unique!

Kern River is a great place in the hot California Desert. This place has everything to make you feel at home. Several large sites for tents or RV's , bathrooms with full showers, a pool, splashpad and water play area. They have these weird Banana bikes which were fun. I was in complete heaven when I saw the coffee bar! There is a big pavilion with cooking areas for everyone!

This is close to several nearby attractions. They offer great wifi services. Great places if you have little ones. so much to do and all of the staff was wonderful.

They have Cabins too! I didnt stay in them but they are pretty cute.

      On the River!

We love these campground. We go every year during the summer! Nice clean small campground. Book way in advance though. You can get a site right on the river with no sewage hook ups or get all hook ups off the river. You can even rent a cabin. Really close to town. Take a ride down the river in your tube and walk back. So much fun!

      Songdog Ranch

Spectacular views. They have stars at night

Stayed here several years ago on a motorcycle trip. Owner guided us to our tent site up on the ridge. Tent was top quality with very comfortable mattress. Brought us an ice chest with dinner and breakfast for us to cook over the fire.  We happened to be there when the Hale-bopp comet was overhead and had a front row seat for that show.  Sounds like they still provide the same great service.  Heading that way in a coupe of weeks and will have to check out the RV sites.

    Guide to Edison

Cabin camping near Edison, California offers varied accommodations throughout the Kern River region where summer temperatures typically reach 90-100°F. The area sits at elevations ranging from 2,500-4,000 feet, creating distinct seasonal access challenges for certain remote cabin sites. Winter visitors should prepare for occasional snow at higher elevation cabins between December and February.

    What to do

River activities: Float down creek channels at KRS RV Resort@Camp James where inner tubes provide family entertainment. "The kids loved tubing down it all day. In front of us was the river. Gorgeous views," reports one visitor who stayed at site 80 alongside a small creek running through the campgrounds.

Fishing opportunities: Cast for trout directly from riverfront cabin sites during summer months. "There is great trout fishing right off the property, and the bathrooms have always been well kept and clean," notes a long-time visitor to Camp James who's been returning for over 10 years.

Wildlife viewing: Watch for birds and wildlife along the river's edge during early morning hours. "Great birds along the river, lots of ducks and egrets, and a bald eagle perched in a tree right above my site with its breakfish!" shared one camper at Kern River County Park.

    What campers like

River access: Direct waterfront sites at Camp Kernville provide immediate water entry points. A camper noted, "The park is right on the river, clean and in wonderful condition. There is a sandy beach with water access."

Walkable amenities: Short distances to town services from select cabin locations. "The park is right near downtown and you can walk to cafe's, bakery, shops and market," explains a visitor about Camp Kernville's convenient location.

Spacious sites: Room between cabin areas for privacy and comfort. "50 huge campsites with lots of trees for shade. Many river side sites," describes a regular visitor at Kern River County Park, adding that it's "only a few miles to town."

    What you should know

Access challenges: Remote cabins require 4WD vehicles in certain locations. At Oak Flat Lookout "you will need a 4-wheel drive to get there. The road is very sketch for the last mile to get to the lookout."

Pest considerations: Bug activity varies by season and location. "Literally thousands of earwigs everywhere. We sprayed with the ultra toxic bug spray left behind, then returned and swept them up," reported one Oak Flat Lookout visitor who faced significant insect issues.

Reservation timing: Book early for summer stays when demand peaks. "Book way in advance though. You can get a site right on the river with no sewage hook ups or get all hook ups off the river," advises a regular visitor to Camp James.

    Tips for camping with families

Water features: Kid-friendly splash areas at Lake Isabella-Kern River KOA provide cooling options during hot days. "They have a wonderful pool and splash pad for the kids. The staff was amazing! They have pizza and a small bar to relax in," notes a summer visitor.

Entertainment options: Check cabin sites offering planned activities for children. "They offer movie nights and pancakes on certain days," explains a KOA visitor who found the amenities particularly suited for families with young children.

Shade considerations: Select sites with natural coverage during summer months. "Most of the sites have shaded trees," reports a visitor to Lake Isabella KOA, highlighting the importance of protection from direct sun when temperatures climb.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Consider hookup locations relative to river proximity at Songdog Ranch. "Lots of campsite choices along the ridge with beautiful expansive views of the plain," notes a spring visitor who booked through Hipcamp.

Site maintenance: Well-kept grounds make for easier cabin and RV stays. "The sites are spacious with potable water and the chemical toilets are actually clean," reports a regular Songdog Ranch visitor who considers it among their favorite camping destinations.

Weather planning: Time visits for moderate temperatures to maximize outdoor enjoyment. "Would recommend visiting during the cooler months as it's an open plain, but there are nice hand built pergolas at the picnic benches for some shade," advises a spring visitor to Songdog Ranch.
