Inaccurate Coordinates

Arrived at the coordinates and had no place to turn off the road. Also, the area was hit by wildfires (maybe 2 years ago) so it's all pretty barren. Camped at Holey Meadows campground a few miles away.

Definitely beautiful

Does take about 45 mins to wind up there and i got there at 1:15am. Didn't find the campgrounds but had large side areas with forest machinery. Next to stream. Then if you continue on you will hit a 4 mile off road (my Corolla/any sedan OK) and see great views and waterfall! Nice!

Secluded

This place was beautiful! We found a spot right next to the water and fell asleep to the sound of it.

Where we found was a very large pull off, minimal road traffic. It was perfect for the night before we continued our road trip.

Quiet and comfortable

Parked next to the road (didn’t want to mess with any critters) and barely noticed any road the whole night. Stayed from 5 until around 7 the next day.

Great spot in the Sequoia Forest

It’s a really nice spot. The meadow is nice but you need to hike in. We saw two bears every night so take precaution. They were Cubs, they’re not scared of you but also won’t mess with you if you lock up all your food.

Best place to go during COVID

This place is amazing, we went on a Thursday night and left on a Sunday afternoon. The area is secluded and away from kern campgrounds where you will see a lot of people. You will have some people checking out the area or driving in but for us they all left. We had this huge place for ourselves for 3 days which was amazing. It is a huge area enough for other campgrounds but during this pandemic you definitely want to be away from people. Anyways, I really enjoyed this camp because you have a running creek and a beautiful meadow which you will have some cows visiting every morning. This place has lots of trees great to hang a hammock like I did. What I like is that all you hear is the birds singing and the creek running, it is so relaxing. You will come across some wildlife, this is the path of a bear and a mountain lion so be careful. You will see many tracks of them and also deer. But they never bothered us and also what do you expect you are in the middle of no where.

There is a market in johnsondale about 10-15 minutes Incase you forgot something but it is very pricey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the best areas for dispersed camping in Sequoia National Forest?

Sequoia National Forest offers excellent dispersed camping along secluded areas away from the busy Kern campgrounds. Look for spots near streams and meadows where you can enjoy the sounds of water. Many visitors find large pull-offs from the main roads that accommodate vehicles well. The area approximately 45 minutes up the winding road provides access to beautiful scenery, including streams and waterfalls. Some areas require a short hike to reach meadows, offering more privacy but requiring additional preparation.

What's the difference between dispersed camping in Sequoia National Forest versus Sequoia National Park?

Sequoia National Park does not permit dispersed camping - all camping must be in designated campgrounds with proper facilities. In contrast, Sequoia National Forest allows dispersed camping with fewer restrictions, giving you the freedom to find secluded spots next to streams and meadows. The Forest area provides more self-sufficient camping opportunities where you can enjoy natural features like waterfalls without the crowds and regulations of the National Park. Remember that National Forest lands require proper food storage due to wildlife activity, particularly bears.

What regulations should I know about for dispersed camping in Giant Sequoia National Monument?

When dispersed camping in Giant Sequoia National Monument, proper food storage is mandatory due to active bear populations - even cubs aren't afraid of humans. Camp at least 100 feet from water sources and use existing fire rings if fires are permitted (check current restrictions as they change seasonally). Practice Leave No Trace principles and pack out all trash. Some areas have been affected by wildfires, limiting camping options. Vehicle access may be restricted in certain locations, so check road conditions before traveling. Camping is limited to 14 days within a 30-day period.

Is there free dispersed camping near Sequoia National Park entrances?

Yes, free dispersed camping is available in Sequoia National Forest areas not far from park entrances. Many campers find accessible spots by looking for large pull-offs from forest roads. These free sites often feature scenic settings near streams and natural features. Keep in mind that reaching some of these areas requires driving approximately 45 minutes on winding roads, and while some sections may seem rugged, they're generally accessible with standard vehicles. Always be prepared for limited facilities since these are undeveloped sites.

What dispersed camping options exist near Three Rivers, CA?

Near Three Rivers, you'll find dispersed camping options in the Sequoia National Forest areas. These sites typically feature spots near water sources, providing peaceful natural soundscapes. Look for large pull-offs from forest roads that can accommodate vehicles easily. While reaching these areas requires navigating winding roads (approximately 45 minutes from main highways), they offer seclusion from crowds. Some locations feature streams and even waterfalls within hiking distance. Note that recent wildfire activity has affected some areas, so conditions vary by specific location.

What is boondocking like near Sequoia and where are the best spots?

Boondocking near Sequoia offers a secluded experience with beautiful natural surroundings. The best spots are found along forest roads with large pull-offs, particularly those next to streams where you can fall asleep to the sound of running water. Some excellent locations include areas about 45 minutes up the winding forest roads, where you'll find spaces with minimal traffic and maximum privacy. Some spots have accessible 4-mile off-road sections leading to waterfalls (navigable even with sedans). Be prepared for wildlife encounters, including bears, and bring all necessary supplies as there are no facilities.
