Village Creek State Park provides direct access to over 30 miles of trails on Crowley's Ridge, a unique geological formation in eastern Arkansas. Located near Wynne, Arkansas, this equestrian-focused campground sits at approximately 300 feet elevation, offering a higher vantage point than surrounding Mississippi Delta lowlands. The park contains three separate camping areas that can accommodate various camping styles, with both lakeside sites and forest campsites available.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Bear Creek Lake Recreation Area offers excellent fishing access. "Absolutely a hidden Gem! Amazing views and everything is so clean and beautiful! We were even able to spot an Eagle!!" reports Fasteagle.
Golf course access: Village Creek State Park Campground features a 27-hole golf course for campers wanting to mix outdoor recreation with camping. "The golf course here is really nice, hiking trails good as well," notes Bob M., who also mentions that "town of Wynne not too far away for groceries, supplies."
Swimming and boating: Mississippi River State Park Campground includes lake access with sandy beach areas. "It was set back on its own point out into the lake, so our tents were surrounded on three sides by water. The campground was right across from the swimming area which had a sandy wade-in," shares Sean F.
What campers like
Private bathroom facilities: The restroom setup at Mississippi River State Park receives consistent praise. "The bath house had 4 separate rooms, each with shower. Very very clean!" explains Gary P., who adds that the park has "17 sites, all level with full hook ups."
Spacious campsites: Campers appreciate the room between sites, especially at Bear Creek Lake Recreation Area. "There are 14 full hookup sites that all have a water view, some actually by the water. Very small campground but up to date," describes Kathy E.
Wildlife viewing: The natural setting provides opportunities to see native animals. "We saw a few snakes but they were just king snakes," mentions Ryan S. about Mississippi River State Park, while also noting its "serenity and peace" and that "there is a 1.5 mile trail which was fun."
What you should know
Limited cell service: Connectivity varies significantly between horse campgrounds near Wynne, Arkansas. "We lost service about 5/10 minutes out from the park with Verizon so if there are things you need to search before do that!" warns Brittany R. about Village Creek State Park.
Weather considerations: Summer heat affects camping comfort. "Wish we weren't staying in a tent and would have come at a cooler part of the year. Was too hot to do anything at the beginning of July. Ended up leaving early," shares Kali D. about her experience at Village Creek State Park Campground.
Limited amenities at some sites: Not all campgrounds offer full amenities. "We didn't see a camp store on-site (just a gift shop with a few scattered camp supplies) but the visitor center had very helpful rangers. The only real lack for facilities in the camp was a dish-washing station," explains Sean F. about Mississippi River State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Visitor center activities: Educational programs benefit younger visitors. "The park office has a large room for exhibits. The Rangers also keep a very full schedule of activities to keep locals and campers busy," explains Shana D. about Mississippi River State Park.
Kid-friendly water activities: Several locations offer water recreation. "They rent out kayaks for those looking to explore the lake!" adds Shana D., while Lindsey P. mentions "We stayed in a small tent camping area beside one of the lakes. The hiking trail was beautiful and we saw several woodpeckers!"
Bike-friendly areas: Some campgrounds accommodate cycling. "Bring your horse, bring your bike, bring your yak and pole, decisions, decisions," suggests Shelly S. about Village Creek State Park, noting that "Camp sites are spacious and bath houses co located. Well maintained areas and friendly helpful staff."
Tips from RVers
Full hookup availability: Several parks offer complete connections. "We stayed in the B loop FHU area. The sites there are large, and spaced out pretty well," notes Bob M. about Cook's Lake RV Resort and Campground, who also advises that "if you stay in the B loop, you're about a two mile hike to the hiking trails."
Site reservations: Popular equestrian campgrounds near Wynne fill quickly. "The sites stayed booked, so if you want to give it a try, you need to book well in advance of your desired date of travel," advises Kathy E. about Mississippi River State Park.
Site selection considerations: Not all sites are created equal. "My favorite sites are 12, 13, and 14. My least favorite were 9, 10, and 11, but they are pull through sites," recommends elizabeth L. about Mississippi River State Park.
