Village Creek State Park Campground offers one of Arkansas' most distinctive camping experiences, situated along Crowley's Ridge in Wynne. This unique geological formation creates an environment unlike any other in the state, with unusual plant species and terrain features. The park spans 7,000 acres with elevations ranging from 230 to 380 feet above sea level, providing a variety of camping environments from waterfront sites to ridge-top accommodations.
What to do
Explore unique hiking trails: Village Creek features multiple nature paths including preserved sections of the Trail of Tears. "The roads leading to this campground are fantastic for bikers, and the lakes have produced state record fish. It's well maintained, and has a lot of options," notes Jonathan C. from Village Creek State Park Campground.
Fishing at two lakes: Both Lake Dunn and Lake Austell offer excellent fishing opportunities. "Only an hour from Memphis, this campground is VERY nice - three camping areas, two lakes with boat rentals, six cabins, and a gorgeous 27 hole golf course," reports Linda A. Anglers should bring basic tackle for bass, crappie and bream.
Horse trails for equestrians: The equestrian camping area provides specialized facilities for those traveling with horses. "Bring your horse, bring your bike, bring your yak and pole, decisions, decisions. Horse camping complete with covered stall area and trail," mentions Shelly S.
What campers like
Spacious, well-maintained sites: The camping areas provide ample room between sites, particularly in the newer sections. "The sites there are large, and spaced out pretty well. Bathrooms were clean, park staff was great," shares Bob M. from Memphis KOA.
Peaceful atmosphere: The layout of the park creates a sense of seclusion even when the campground has numerous visitors. "This place is very beautiful and DEEP into to woods. The sites are very spread out with privacy though and we loved that!" writes Brittany R.
Equestrian facilities: For horse owners, the specialized camping area offers premium amenities. "Camp sites are spacious and bath houses co located. Well maintained areas and friendly helpful staff," according to one reviewer who appreciated the dedicated equestrian infrastructure.
What you should know
Variable site conditions: Not all camping areas offer the same amenities or environment. "We camped at Village Creek State Park in the Crowley's Ridge region of Arkansas over Labor Day weekend. We booked two class B RV sites... While all of that made for really cool atmosphere, the sites themselves left a lot to be desired," reports Laura G.
Seasonal weather considerations: The region experiences distinct seasons with hot, humid summers and mild winters. "Lots of trails and activities to do around the area. Wish we weren't staying in a tent and would have come at a cooler part of the year. Was too hot to do anything at the beginning of July," shares Kali D. from Delta Ridge RV Park.
Cell service limitations: Connectivity can be unreliable throughout the park. "We lost service about 5/10 minutes out from the park with Verizon so if there are things you need to search before do that!" warns a recent visitor.
Park maintenance schedule: Facilities may close for seasonal maintenance or after weather events. "More than half the trails and park were closed due to flooding. Lots of construction in progress," notes Holly C.
Tips for camping with families
Choose timing carefully: Summer temperatures can limit outdoor activities. "Wish we weren't staying in a tent and would have come at a cooler part of the year. Was too hot to do anything at the beginning of July. Ended up leaving early," advises one camper.
Bring bicycles for kids: The paved campground roads provide safe riding areas. "My kids brought there bikes and enjoyed the one bike trail," mentions Holly C.
Consider educational opportunities: The park offers natural history education suitable for children. "The Big Ben Nature Trail offers a great opportunity to identify these unusual plant species and is a short, easy hike," explains one visitor to EZ Daze RV Park.
Tips from RVers
Site selection matters: The newer camping loops offer more modern amenities. "We stayed 4 nights in the B loop FHU area. The sites there are large, and spaced out pretty well," reports Bob M.
Distance to amenities: Different camping loops have varying proximity to trails and facilities. "If you stay in the B loop, you're about a two mile hike to the hiking trails fyi. The A loop is much closer to that," notes a frequent camper at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Memphis.
Leveling considerations: Some sites require minimal setup due to excellent site preparation. "The site was very leveled!" shares Brittany R.
Drainage quality: The campground design includes effective water management. "It rained briefly and our spot was down a slight hill so there was a bit of concern with puddling, but there was proper drainage and the site didn't puddle as much as we would've thought!"
