Description
Escape the noise of the city and settle into the quiet beauty of the Sonoran Desert at Colossal Cave Mountain Park. Hidden within the rolling hills and cactus forests of Posta Quemada Canyon, the campground offers a rare chance to experience Southern Arizona the way it once was, open, peaceful, and surrounded by nature. Originally developed in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, these historic grounds now welcome modern campers seeking dark skies, desert scenery, and a slower pace beneath towering saguaros and mesquite trees.
The campground consists of two large camping areas, El Bosquecito and La Selvilla, along with several smaller sites totaling 30 individual campsites spread throughout the canyon landscape. Each area offers its own quiet atmosphere and sense of seclusion while still remaining close to the park’s main attractions and trail systems.
Camping at Colossal Cave Mountain Park is a chance to experience the desert in a way most visitors never do. During the day the canyon is alive with sunlight glowing across rugged hillsides, cactus gardens, and winding desert washes. Gambel’s quail dart between mesquite groves while hawks circle high above the cliffs. As evening settles in, the desert changes character completely. Temperatures cool and the canyon grows quiet except for the distant calls of coyotes and the rustle of the breeze through creosote and ocotillo. The night skies here are truly unforgettable. Far from the harsh glow of city lights, campers are treated to brilliant views of the Milky Way stretching overhead across some of the darkest skies in Southern Arizona.
Whether you are arriving with a tent, camper van, trailer, or RV, the campground offers a rustic and authentic desert camping experience. Sites are primitive by design, allowing the natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert to remain the focus. Picnic tables, fire rings, and nearby water access help make your stay comfortable while preserving the historic character of the canyon. Many campsites are positioned beside native vegetation and rock formations that create a feeling of privacy and immersion in nature.
Beyond the campground itself, visitors can explore everything the park has to offer including guided cave tours, hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, historic ranch buildings, and scenic overlooks filled with desert wildlife. The rich history of the area can still be felt throughout the canyon from the original Civilian Conservation Corps craftsmanship to the stories of ranchers, outlaws, and explorers who once traveled these same desert paths.
Whether you stay for one night or several, camping at Colossal Cave Mountain Park offers something increasingly rare: silence, open skies, desert history, and the feeling of truly stepping away from the noise of modern life.
