    Overview

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge guarantees breathtaking scenery and an unforgettable experience for visitors staying in one of the 14 rustic cabins located in Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. Getting to the cabin can be a thrilling adventure in itself, as most of them require the use of boats, aircraft, hiking or skiing. The grudging withdrawal of the Harding Ice Field has helped to make the lands of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge a "miniature Alaska." Today, the refuge includes examples of every major Alaska habitat type. The refuge is an Alaska in miniature in its diversity of wildlife, as well.

    Recreation

Eager anglers can pursue chinook, sockeye, coho and pink salmon; as well as Dolly Varden char, rainbow trout, and arctic grayling. The refuge is also home to brown and black bears, caribou, Dall sheep, mountain goats, wolves, lynx, wolverines, eagles and thousands of shorebirds and waterfowl, not to mention the mighty Alaska-Yukon moose that the refuge was originally established (as the Kenai National Moose Range) to protect.

    Natural Features

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge spans 1.9 million acres along the western Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. The region includes the western slopes of the Kenai Mountains, forested lowlands along Cook Inlet, rivers, lakes and wetlands. To the east is Chugach National Forest and southeast is Kenai Fjords National Park.

    Cabin rental no camping

This is actually a cabin rental facility and they do not offer RV parking or camping. It is on a nice set of land and the owners are very friendly and would make a good rental if you’re tired of camping.

    Right in the city

I don’t hate this RV Park which is saying a lot. There are 60 sites and this RV park is open from May 15 until Labor Day. You can reserve RV and tent sites online but you must call for cabin rentals.. This is right in the heart of Soldotna and close to anything you might have forgotten.

Kelly Lake Cabin was the perfect getaway

I can't say enough about my stay at Kelly Lake Cabin of the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Cabin. It was late Feb./ early March, and we were tired from our previous two days of camping and hiking, so when we arrived at the lake, we decided to drive the short distance on the lake instead of hiking out to the cabin with all our stuff. We parked on the lake in front of the cabin and were pleasantly surprised to see someone had left an igloo! The cabin was neat, the newest we'd ever stayed in, and had a wonderful view of the trees and lake. Even the outhouse had great views! The woodstove in the cabin was extremely effective at warming the space (we woke up sweating!), and the fact that the cabin came with an outdoor fire ring and boat made us want to come back with friends in the summer even more! Absolutely loved the space and our time there.

Anything you could ever want to rent

This is a campground in Gear rental. You can rent everything from fishing poles and nuts to tent camping equipment and anything you might need for watercraft her. They weren’t sleeping bags and dry bags. 10 sites will run you $25 RVs 40 and cabins start at $175. This is right off the Sterling highway and impossible to mess it’s worth checking out if you’re looking at hooking up your RV.

Juneau is a campers wonderland. Honestly, you can't go wrong - especially if you're utilizing the Forest Service cabins sprinkled all over Alaska. This particular cabin was in amazing condition, and very clean. We loved every second of the Alaskan atmosphere here - complete with wildlife.

    Gorgeous Trout Lake Cabin

We hiked in 7.5 miles from the Resurrection Pass South trailhead to enjoy this spacious, primitive cabin with amazing views of Trout Lake. Fish for trout in the provided row boat, or off the dock. Wildlife seen here: moose and beavers and various birds.

Hike: 7 miles to spur off to cabin, .5 miles to cabin from spur.

Note: The cabin can be accessed by floatplane, hiking, biking, skiing, horseback and snowmobile.

Note: Primitive cabin, must pack in/pack out own gear and trash

    Backpacking to a USFS Cabin

The US Forest Service owns little cabins all over AK and each varies in amenities, age, distance, etc. This one is almost 10 miles of moderate hiking from the trailhead, so is serious backpacking (not a drive-up campground). The view from the cabin is exceptional, as is the whole trail. There’s wildlife galore and a canoe at the lake to use for free. We weren’t there when it was cold enough to use the wood stove, but it gave the cabin so much character. Make sure to bring everything you need (just like normal backpacking). You can do cabin-to-cabin hiking using a number of USFS cabins in this area, but the hiking is not easy.

We hiked in from the Russan River campground, about 9 miles to the cabin. The hike was very easy, but long. Lots of overgrown foliage and bear scat on the trail so be aware. The cabin slept 6 comfortably with two sharing each of the bottom bunks.

    Russian Lake

The Barber Cabin is just one of many forest service cabins available for rent around the state. All are in outstanding locations, and this is one of my favorites. There are lots of bear in the area, and for those wanting the security of 4 walls, this is a great option. The camping at the lower mouth, is spectacular as well. The area can get lots of traffic with folks hiking in to see the salmon climb the falls.

    Worth the hike

This is an awesome location, certainly worth the hike. You should plan to stay a couple nights if possible. Typical forest service cabin, right on the river, with very likely nobody else around for miles. Great Alaskan experience.

Great little cabin on the lake!

Some nice trout to be caught in the lake, if you ride horses into this cabin and abide by the rules, you will have very little grass for them to eat and you will not be able to watch or protect them from the Bears.

    Great views and amenities

Our second time staying here. There is an amazing ocean and volcano view off a common ground area with a picnic table and fire pit. Eagles soar overhead. Sites are close together but have water, electricity, a small table and fire pit. We didn’t stay in the cabins but they look nice and the property, general store, and washing facilities seem well maintained. Recommend for a night or two when visiting Homer.

    Farmyard camping

For starters my children love this campground. It is fun filled with animals, bicycle rentals, basketball court, playground, seasonal berry picking, eagles nest close by, caribou viewing, balcony viewing area, fire rings and fishing is nearby in the Kenai River. The campsites are well groomed with clean bathrooms/shower rooms. The hosts are more than welcoming and make your visit pleasant. There isn’t much to privacy at this campground but it has a nice homey atmosphere. This was nicely located with a fun twist to camping with the animals! We’ve stayed once in the paddock area another in the grass area on the other side. I preferred the open grass area for the children to run around in without animals. I would recommend this campground to families.

    Campground right on the pond.

    Johnson Lake: Family Camping

Following the shoreline of Johnson Lake, this tidy little campground makes for a fun summer stop with the family. A boat launch provides water access to anyone looking to play with jet skis, motor boats, or canoes and kayaks. shallow warmer waters provide for good swimming as well.

Stocked by fish and game; the later summer months can provide good fishing for Rainbow Trout. Both shore and boat fishing can provide success to the right angler. Just gotta bring the right set up!

A nicely set up day use area is avaIlable nearby as well. Large awnings cover anywhere from 2 to 4 picnic tables providing dry areas. Fire pits and built in BBQ‘s are close by each awning.

Late June and July finds this campground very busy, especially during hot days when locals are looking to escape the sun. noise levels and lake activity can get pretty high at these times. The rest of the year these issues are less likely.

One of my favorIte campgrounds growing up, I could be found here most summer days with a lIne in the water or swimmIng. Now a days I use the day use area occasionally for gatherIngs wIth friends and some BBQin. I tend to avoid the campgrounds durring the summer months because of the overcrowding, but late season camping and fishing can be peaceful and quiet.

    Need to knows

    • 51 total spaces.
    • Good for both tent and motor home camping.
    • Well water and dumpsters are provided.
    • Bathrooms are available.
    • Excellent Trout fishing in later summer months.
    • Camp hosts can be intrusive.
