    QUIET AND PEACEFUL

Driving up to this campground, I almost turned around. But, getting here, I am so glad we didn't! Our site, #34 on the Catoma side, was perfectly level, easy to back in, and a lot of personal space between campers. The view is amazing! The water is right behind us! We have full hookups here, which makes it so easy. There is a small playground area for the kids and a bath house within walking distance.

    Not what we hoped for

We stayed in the Antioch loop on site 93. The site was super close to 92 and 94. We felt we had no personal space. A couple kept walking through our campsite to get to a boat they had parked at our site. I love rustic but Antioch was not rustic, it was over grown and did not look maintained. We think they are letting the Antioch loop go. If that something you like, over grown and close, Antioch loop is for you. We do plan to come back and will try out the Catoma Loop. Catoma Loop looks more like what we enjoy; spaced out, maintained and welcoming.

    Montgomery South RV Park

    Great Little Campground

I stayed here for 8 weeks while travel nursing at a local hospital. I had previously moved from another campground I did not feel safe at. Boy was this place a breath of fresh air! The staff was very nice and accommodating! They patrolled the grounds on golf carts frequently. There are only two single serve bathrooms with showers on site, but they were well maintained and also had heat lamps for the wintertime. The laundry room was small with only two slightly dated washers and dryers, but they got the job done. You just had to time it to get in the queue. Each site had a picnic table, but sadly not all of them had fire pit rings. Mine was one that did not. All of the sites were gravel paved, but they were very level. The staff works hard to upkeep the sites by delivering fresh gravel to sites with a tractor when campers leave. The staff was very kind to come by and warn us when we were expecting freezing temps to help prevent our pipes from freezing. They even carried my trash bag up to the dumpster once on their golf cart so I wouldn’t have to! My biggest complaint here was the spotty WiFi, but that’s to be expected at most parks. This park is right up the street from Alabama Safari Park, and there are a few restaurants up the road near the interstate. Overall, I highly recommend this park! Loved staying here, and would definitely return again! It’s a quick hop on the interstate to get to Montgomery or Prattville.

Nice sites but noisy on race days

Stayed in the Antioch Loop (older section). The sites are a nice size with gravel. Water and electric. Lots of trees and shade. Nice playground and air conditioned shower house. Saw laundry was available but didn’t use. Lots of Spanish moss. The downside, Saturday night race nearby was really loud. I wasn’t terribly bothered but some people might be. Check the raceway schedule before you book.

    Wonderful experience!

The campground was wonderful! So many amenities. Air conditioned bathrooms. Shower pressure and temperatures spot on and clean. Lake beach was wonderful everyone was friendly. Hiking, paddle boats, canoeing, boat rentals, fishing pier, archery, putt putt, and a snow cone truck that came around in the evenings. What a treat. Will do again.

    Oak Mountain State Park Campground

I’m a new camping Mom, so far starters it is clean and safe and lots of fun!

My 3 kids and I pitched a tent at the camp ground and then took a dip in the lake. Lake was a short walk from our tent, we stayed an hour and all enjoyed the refreshing water. Beach area was not crowded but me most enjoyed the doc where my kids could jump off. I swam as well and loved it. View of the mountains was very nice.

We cooked dinner at our tent and scored a spot very close to the bath house which included a utility closet with a sink for cleaning dishes, etc. Tent site was well marked and orderly. Including a fire pit with grill attachment. Beautiful canopy of trees making for great shade. Beautiful evening, very quiet and orderly.

Enjoyed cooking breakfast the next morning followed by hiking and a trip to Peavine Falls. Very nice and highly recommended.

Staffing at Oak Mtn was great. Plenty of folks patrolling and looking after the camping community ☀️⛺️

    Chewacla State Park Campground

    Close to Buc-ees and I-85!

I called on Sunday afternoon and immediately connected to a young lady who assured me that a site was available. The loop is nicely designed, full hookups, passing your target on the left (better visibility). There are glamping tents for rent. Several hiking trails, including a waterfall trail are inside the gate checkpoint. The park is close to town, meaning abundance of food options and cheap gas (2.499) on June 6, 2025.

Upper Improved Campground — Cheaha State Park

Great Campground with Lots of Nature and Things to do

On our trip to Cheaha State Park we stayed in the lower campground, which features very roomy RV sites, some with really nice views, and all with full hookups including power, water, and sewer.  There is no cable or wifi available however, and cell service is pretty spotty.  There is also an upper campground with RV sites in the park and separate tent and primitive camping sites available.

The lower campground is right next to Cheaha Lake, which is a small lake, but large enough for some kayaking and features a sandy beach swimming area and a nice playground (see video).  There are also pavilions and picnic areas around the lake.  There is a nature center by the lake that has some interesting nature exhibits and a few live animals to check out.

There are lots of great hiking trails, mostly toward the top of Mount Cheaha in the park itself, and there are several different overlooks with spectacular views.  The main overlook has an easy boardwalk trail that leads to it from the parking area and is wheelchair accessible.  There's also a pool, lodge, cabins, and a restaurant on the mountain in the park.

The main road that leads to the park and campgrounds has some pretty steep and long uphill and downhill sections.  Nothing too crazy, but I would suggest that you make sure your tow vehicle can handle it without overheating the engine or transmission, especially in the heat of the summer.

Upper Improved Campground — Cheaha State Park

Great for one, friends and family

My best friend and I camped for Mother's Day in 2017. We loved it. We were in the semi primitive area. Some sites were smaller than others and not all sites had flat spots to set up the tent but they are within walking distance to the bathroom and the pavilions. It was quiet and the staff were helpful. The only real downside are the showers. You have to buy tokens to use the showers and they're only open until (I believe) 6 p.m. The showers were pricey considering most places offer them for free. The pavilions are great! They're huge, have plenty of picnic tables, a fireplace on both sides and outlets. We set up our coffee pot and ate breakfast then rode around to explore. A few minutes drive from the park is a great hiking spot with 3 waterfalls. I'm looking forward to visiting again with my family.

What campers like

Waterfront sites: Many campers specifically request lakeside sites for easy water access. "We stayed at site 100 it was an excellent site right on the water next to us was like a private beach. This is the only public access to Lake Martin. Large lake for swimming, boating, fishing."

Clean facilities: Oak Mountain State Park Campground receives praise for its upgraded amenities. A recent visitor reported, "They put a massive amount of money into updating this place. This is the #1 best state park campground I have ever been at. Some of the non-5star reviews are people before the updates or people that really should just be at a KOA resort."

Seasonal variations: Winter camping offers a different experience with fewer crowds. One camper at Wind Creek noted, "We were the only trailer in loop D. It was quiet and very enjoyable! Being right on the lake and having the ducks swim up really thrilled our dogs. The bathrooms were very clean. I imagine that summer is a very different experience, but we enjoyed it!"

Flexible camping options: Bohamia offers multiple accommodation styles for glamping near Rockford, Alabama. A visitor shared, "Services are great some cabins and tents having ACs, but primitive camping allowed as well. Great showers and bathhouse with filtered drinking water option that I used daily."

What you should know

Seasonal facilities: Some amenities operate on limited schedules. "This campground is a better place for the summer not much to do in the winter. It's a place for swimming, fishing, and boat riding. Nice bath houses and nice camp store."

Licensing requirements: Gunter Hill and other waterfront campgrounds may require permits for certain activities. "If you're renting one of their boats then you need a vessel license. If you don't have a vessel licenses then you can take the test at the marina."

Check-in logistics: Understanding campground layouts prevents confusion. "Check in is at 4 pm and check out is at 2 pm. Spots are close together but I've seen worse. Campground is clean and wasn't noisy."

The hike was easy and not very long. The trail loops around a lake and brings you to a waterfall on the back side of the lake."

Geocaching adventures: Several parks offer geocaching opportunities for tech-savvy explorers. "We hiked, fished, hiked and the kids geocached, biked and scootered."

Tips from RVers

Off-season advantages: Winter camping provides more solitude. "We were the only trailer in loop D. It was quiet and very enjoyable! Being right on the lake and having the ducks swim up really thrilled our dogs."

Connectivity options: For those needing to stay connected, signal quality varies by location. "We got 2 bars on Verizon, and their WiFi was better than most CGs this size."
