Cabin options near Bankhead National Forest range from rustic to modern, with most properties offering water access. Sites are situated at various elevations throughout the region, with some cabins located at 800-1,100 feet above sea level. Lake access cabins typically experience peak occupancy during summer months when water temperatures reach 80-85°F.
What to do
Watercraft activities at Smith Lake: Smith Lake Park provides direct lake access for fishing and boating. "GPS took us in a very rural way with lots of twisty roads. One there we found an open spot on our own since it was a holiday the office was closed. Full hook ups and a fairly level grass pad. Not bad for an overnight. There are tons of thing to do here especially if you like to fish!" notes a Smith Lake Park visitor.
Trail hiking in Bankhead Forest: Cabins at Bama Campground offer convenient access to waterfall trails. "This is a great little campground... The location of the campground makes it an excellent location to enjoy the numerous waterfall hikes in the area. The campground was laid out well with spacious gravel sites and full hookups," reports a Bama Campground & RV Park camper.
Swimming at lake beaches: Several properties offer swimming areas during warm months. "Stayed in spot 12. Beautiful lakefront location! Electric/water hookup only. Workers were wonderful and place all together is clean and well maintained," says a visitor at Decatur / Wheeler Lake KOA Holiday.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Spacing between cabins varies by location. "Spot are very bigs and a good distance between them. Full hookup sites. Amenitied are very cleans, kids play grounds. Park for walking, biking, use your boat and kayak, boat ramp access," mentions a camper at Thousand Trails Hidden Cove.
Clean facilities: Many cabin properties maintain well-kept bath houses and common areas. "Nice clean laundry and baths. Nice location on Smith lake. Sites were roomy. Well managed," reports a Hidden Cove visitor.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: The forested settings create habitat for various species. "We have a great time and fun time. For sure we will stay again," notes a Hidden Cove reviewer who enjoyed the natural surroundings.
What you should know
Limited cell service: Several cabin locations have connectivity challenges. "We loved this place, a little off the heating path but well worth it. You must check out the nature bridge nearby as well as the Houston jail. Sites were large and bathrooms were very clean. Cell service is spotty so either have a mobile data setup or by the local connection for your stay," explains a visitor at Hidden Cove.
Distance to supplies: Most cabin locations require driving for groceries. "Great campground & people! Only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is the lack of things to do. No fenced in dog park but plenty of space to have one. Right on the lake but unaware of any kind of rentals available nearby— closest rentals are 40 mins away on the opposite side of the lake. Nearest Walmart is Cullman which is 45 mins away."
Seasonal availability: Water access becomes limited in colder months. "We were here during winter, so there wasn't a lot going on. This is a nice campground that is adding a lot of new sites. The older sites seem to be mostly 30 amp, FHU. They do have some 50 amp, and it looks like all the new sites are 50 amp. You are right on the lake with a good view."
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several properties offer play equipment for children. "We stayed in spot 12. Beautiful lakefront location! Electric/water hookup only. Workers were wonderful and place all together is clean and well maintained," reports a Joe Wheeler State Park Campground visitor.
Water safety precautions: Lake properties require supervision for children. "My husband and I went on our first camper trip here. It was breathtakingly beautiful! They have a rope course, water activities/rentals, cabins, rv/camper/tent sites waterside, and more. We fished feet from our camper off of the bank."
Hiking difficulty levels: Trail systems vary in challenge level. "Very clean, well kept campground. Bath houses kept very clean. Small general store at check in with necessities. Beautiful location with several hiking trails and places to kayak," notes a Joe Wheeler State Park visitor.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling requirements: Some cabin areas have uneven terrain. "Very nice quiet campground. 4 shower rooms open during business hours. 4 washers and 4 dryers. $2 per load. They have recently added a lot of new slots. Once the grass grows in, they will be very nice. Only concern is there is no shade on these new spots, so they will be warm in the summer," explains a Cullman Campground visitor.
Hookup variability: Electrical service differs between properties. "This is a nice campground that is adding a lot of new sites. The older sites seem to be mostly 30 amp, FHU. They do have some 50 amp, and it looks like all the new sites are 50 amp. You are right on the lake with a good view."
Booking flexibility: Reservation policies vary by season. "Our site was rather low, as we asked for a lake site. Since it just rained, there was a lot of standing water around. But, overall campground had a nice boat launch and beach parking. Our site was level gravel. Ladies at the front desk were nice."
