Wind Creek State Park, the largest state-operated campground in Alabama, encompasses over 1,445 acres along the shores of Lake Martin near Equality. The park sits at approximately 490 feet above sea level, with distinct seasonal variations in water levels due to dam controls. Camping facilities spread across multiple loops with over 600 individual sites, making it one of the most extensive campground systems in the region.
What to do
Watercraft exploration: Lake Martin provides extensive boating opportunities at Wind Creek State Park Campground. The marina rents motorized jon boats and pontoon boats for periods from 4 to 48 hours, while the Creem Shop offers pedal boats and canoes. As camper Romeo M. notes, "The marina for motorized jon boats and pontoon boats. You can rent these for 4-48 hours. If you're renting one of their boats then you need a vessel license. If you don't have a vessel licenses then you can take the test at the marina."
Trail riding: The trail systems around Equality provide options for equestrians. Chilton County Minooka Park offers dedicated trails for riders bringing their own horses, with no on-site horse corrals available. According to Chris B., "Lots of trails to hit on the dirt bikes or ATVs. We go for day riding trips once a month or so."
Winter camping: While summer attracts crowds for water activities, off-season camping offers a different experience. Visitor Erin L. shares about winter camping at Wind Creek: "We were the only trailer in loop D. It was quiet and very enjoyable! Being right on the lake and having the ducks swim up really thrilled our dogs. The bathrooms were very clean. I imagine that summer is a very different experience, but we enjoyed it!"
What campers like
Lake access: Premium waterfront sites at Wind Creek State Park provide direct lake entry. Rachel G. describes, "We stayed at site 100 it was an excellent site right on the water next to us was like a private beach. This is the only public access to Lake Martin. Large lake for swimming, boating, fishing."
Variety of recreation: Beyond standard camping amenities, Wind Creek State Park offers diverse activities. Matthew M. spent an extended stay: "Zip line, boat rentals, restaurant, beaches on the lake, boat ramp. Places were a little tight but was worth it. Little bit noisy at night but not unbearable. Also understandable bc there are over 500 spots. I spent 2 months there and loved everyday."
Family-friendly environment: The campground design includes facilities for children. Romeo M. explains, "They have playgrounds throughout the campground, trails from 1 mile long to 15 miles long that can be utilized by horse, bike, or on foot... They have a zip line and tree line adventure course, mini-golf, a beach area for swimming, and plenty of fishing spots."
What you should know
Connectivity considerations: Cellular and Wi-Fi service vary by location within the campgrounds. At Wind Creek, Matthew K. reports, "Great location, water views. Only negative is that the wifi is not strong, but Verizon signal is great."
Varying site privacy: The campground layout at Chilton County Minooka Park offers more separation between sites than Wind Creek. Randal B. observes, "It's more of an RV park than campground. There are spaces for tents, but they don't have picnic tables. The trees are actually behind the sites. So, don't think about a hammock."
Seasonal considerations: Activities and amenities change significantly with the seasons. Ginger S. advises, "This campground is a better place for the summer not much to do in the winter. It's a place for swimming, fishing, and boat riding. Nice bath houses and nice camp store."
Tips for camping with families
Activity planning: Multiple play areas throughout the park accommodate children of various ages. Jessi B. shares her family's experience at Wind Creek State Park: "We love camping at Wind Creek. Lots to do for the kiddos!"
Beach access: The lake shore includes designated swimming areas with sand beaches. Kim T. notes during an emergency stay, "Tent camping with family during Hurricane evacuation. Beautiful park, numerous bath houses, laundry, camp store, playgrounds, mini golf, and so much more. Secluded campground with RV and tent sites right on Lake Martin."
Horse riding opportunities: While designated horse campgrounds near Equality, Alabama are limited, families can trailer horses to nearby trails for day rides. The trail systems connect to camping areas but require bringing horses in for day use rather than overnight corrals.
Tips from RVers
Section selection: For full-service camping at Wind Creek, select specific loops. Romeo M. advises, "If you look at the map you'll see that some sites are full hook-up and some are not. We stayed in C section with full hook-ups... Check in is at 4 pm and check out is at 2 pm. Spots are close together but I've seen worse."
Timing considerations: Waterfront premium sites book quickly during peak season. Anna R. describes Wind Creek as "a great family campground with a boat launch on lake Martin. Good swimming, adequate shade."
Facility access: Bathhouse and amenity locations should factor into site selection. Rachel G. notes, "Bathhouses are large and very well taken care of but I did not have any hot water at the time. Bathhouse was also a bit of a hike from site but had parking area so we drove over there and included a nice laundry facility."
