    South Bay on Rocky Lake

    Somewhat secluded but Quiet

Picked this location because it was close to several locations we could take day trips to the coast.

Visited Bar Harbor, Eastport and several places in between.

Because of those activities, we spent most of our time here sleeping and preparing 1-2 meals a day.

Evenings here were pretty quiet and not much traffic after dark. Bathroom was good but no water or garbage service.

    Amazing Beauty, Amazing Camping Experience

Stayed for two nights after Labor Day. Only one other camper in the park and we never saw them but occasionally we could hear a voice. Other than that, it was quiet.

There are about 9 campsites, each with a picnic table, a fire ring and a large camping and parking area for each site.

The best feature of this campground is the view. There is a Lake on both east and west sides of the camping area. Three sites are view of both lakes from the camp sites. I woke up to a view of one lake and my wife saw the other lake from our camper.

The campground has three pit toilets. The large size of the camp sites makes it feel more secluded than it is

We did hear something like a lumber mill operating one morning. Not sure what that was all about.

A Ranger stopped by and visited with us. He then offered us a brochure on the camping area we are planning to visit next. Nice customer service right at our camp site!

    Beautiful lake

Despite taking place during the period of social distancing, everyone at the SF-160 campsite strictly followed the clearly posted epidemic prevention regulations. This created a safe and comfortable space for everyone. Experience Traffic Jam 3D right now!

    Cute Area

I stayed in a small site, just me and my vehicle. I asked for a quiet spot with elec and the site was perfect. It is basic, but more like what you would find at national parks, which I prefer MUCH MORE. My spot was shaded and level enough to have a tent, vehicle, chairs and table (not provided at my site), and they have a fire ring.

It isnt the usual RV sites that are sterile and squished in like sardines, so if thats what you looking for, this isnt it.

I paid $36 for my night, on par with national/ state parks, but much cheaper than most commerical camping grounds.  The area is a little overpriced, so it was nice to stay somewhere reasonable, especially at the end of the season.

THere isnt wifi, my car (ATT) got better service than my phone (Tmobile).

The road is decent, maybe a few spots to watch out for, and they ask you to keep the speed down (5mph) so they are trying to take care of it (or not let it get torn up too much)

I didnt use the shower, but the bathroom was plumbed.

    Friendly But Very Close

What others have said is true. The staff were all very friendly and the pool and playground are well maintained. However, the spaces are very close together and there are no scenic views. The other drawback is the number of seemingly full time units. These units had wooden “improvements” over and around the campers indicating the RVs haven’t moved in a while and won’t move any time soon. Overall, it didn’t “feel” like a campground. It felt more like a mobile home park

    Machias Rips Campsite

    River in Maine

Great free off grid camping near Canadian border. The other previous reviewers did a great job explaining the campground. The only exception is that we had 4 bars of LTE service (AT&T) which was nice. Camp sites today are very buggy- bring your repellent and/or netting.

    Clean but popular

Beautiful place. Clean sites. Easy to find and right off rt 9. Seems to be a bathroom pit-stop for travelers on rt 9 due to having the maintained bathroom. So lots of traffic driving in, using the toilet and then driving right back out.

    Machias Rips Campsite

Amazing FREE Camp Site for All Types of Campers!

This campground is one of my favorites in Maine! Sitting only an hour from Ellsworth and Bangor ME this is a nature lovers dream!

The dirt road leading to the camp can be easily missed if not paying attention! But is clearly marked with a blue sign at the head of the road. Your GPS might not give you an “exact” location but i promise I found the place with no problem!

The road has a few pot holes but nothing my stock (Low to the ground) Dodge Caravan couldn’t handle, There is about 4 Sites with river front views and trails leading to the water from each camp. There are also bigger sites for campers and RV’s. There is a site with a wooden protection shelter for tent campers as well!

New style out houses are on site but other than that it’s completely off grid!

Most Cell phone carriers won’t have service back at the camp, I myself had to drive 20 Minutes up the road for signal, A cell signal booster may work here. Radio signal is fine tho.

Great spot to fish and swim! I’ve caught smallmouth bass, chubs and trout in the river so far! (Black and silver Jerk baits work great) The mosquitoes can get bad in the area but fire pits and fires are permitted in the camp and they helped keep me comfortable from bugs!

There is also a marked trail in the camp that leads deep into the woods, I followed it for about a mile before it got too thick for my interest. Could be the trail that connects to the large pools of water up the river with ADDITIONAL camping there as well.

    Houlton/Canandian Border KOA

Great getaway, cannot wait to go back.

This was a great two day tent camping trip. KOA’s are not always known for their tent sites but this one has a decent amount of them and the DMZ area between the RV’s and the tents is adequate so your not pitching your tent right next to an RV: our campsite was slightly off the beaten path which was exactly what we wanted. Good quite relaxing weekend . They have recently installed a new pool here so if it gets hot you have that great amenity. They also have the mining for gems activity that you see at some KOA’s and all my kids enjoyed that. The bathrooms were super clean. Kids enjoyed finding frogs in all their ponds. They have also added two “glamping tents” which look nice. The family enjoyed this so much we plan on making this an annual trip to this specific campground. This used to be “my brother place” campground and from what I gather significant upgrades have been made. Disclaimer : I know one of the owners but my review is honest.

Third Machias Lake - Machias River Cooridor

    Third lake machias

I have gone camping here a handful of times and it is so beautiful! Definitely far out there and can be difficult to find if you don’t know the area well. Little to no service as well. We canoe to the island and camp on that but there are spots you can get to without a boat we just prefer it there. Make sure to bring everything you need! There are fire rings but the ranges can be sticklers about having a fire permit. This has only happened once that we’ve been there though they usually just leave you alone. These are also free spots that are first come first serve. The bugs can be really bad here especially in the earlier summer months so definitely keep that in mind and bring bug nets. We have caught a ton of fish here as well. Super beautiful lake and remote spot perfect to get away and unplug for a bit.

    Sleeping Bear Camping

    A Hidden Gem!

All in all a fantastic site. The owners are super nice and the campground is immaculate! The bathhouse is a glamping version of what you would normally expect. They have an event site that is well kept. I highly recommend this campground. I contacted them through email and they were very quick about responding.

    South Bay on Rocky Lake

    Solid remote camping

Wasn't sure what to expect, but went anyway. After turning off the highway you take a dirt road for about a mile until you see a sign for the campsites. (My sedan easily made it down the road)

There's a site immediately when you turn in, but about 2 minutes further you'll find a parking lot with what looked to me like 4 more campsites and a boat ramp.

2 sites were on the lake and the other 2 were behind the parking lot. The lot also had a porta-potty in it. 3 of those sites were taken, and none of the sites had much privacy so I took the one right off the road (I could see the road easily from the fire pit/table).

It was a little noisy from the other campers and lacked privacy, but it's a great spot for someone who just needs to pullover and crash.

    Machias Rips Campsite

    Not bad for free camping!

Situated right off of Route 9 between Amherst and Wesley Maine, you can access the Machias River Corridor Public Lands. At this particular location, there are 2 RV sites, 3 tent sites and a lean-to shelter, all situated right on the bank of the river.

We spent one night here in the lean-to on our way to the Cutler Coast. The lean-to was in decent shape but it's definitely been marked by its visitors and has quite the slope to it. It was large enough for us to pitch our 3 person tent in and it was pretty great to fall asleep to the sounds of the Machias River a stone's throw from our tent.

There was a massive fire pit at the lean-to that we didn't utilize. There was also a fair amount of trash in the site, and oddly enough a lot of chewed bubble gum. The sites are spaced out nicely and there's a fair amount of shade to be had. There is also a relatively new and quite clean pit toilet available for use.

All in all, it was a great stopping point that set us up well for our early morning departure to get to the Cutler Coast. I would certainly stay here again if I were in the area.

    Houlton/Canandian Border KOA

    Quaint but adorable

The hosts, who just recently bought this campground are very kind and accommodating. It will eventually be a KOA.

We came in the fall, and the foliage was beautiful. There are many little areas to walk and explore in the campground.

We have a TT and our campsite had wifi, a fire ring, and full hookups. We have kids so we opted for a site close enough to watch them play on the playground.

The pull-through sites are long and have trees in between and around so still gives a feeling of privacy.

    Keenes Lake Family Campground

    Beautiful lake

Camped during Covid restrictions. Everyone seemed to be following the guidelines that were clearly posted by the campsite. The snack bar in the office/shop area was a great fallback plan if we were too lazy to cook, but wasn’t needed. People who ran the place were very accommodating. For some reason our fire ring and table were missing when we arrived, and they had replacements at the site within 30 minutes. They also delivered our wood to our campsite when I asked about where to purchase it while they delivered the missing items. Campsites were roomy enough, but set a bit close together.

    Pull-through sites are a joke!

I had hoped this campground would be amazing. It was our first camping trip of 2020 (amid COVID19). Sadly, we found it to be horrendously inadequate.

We traveled with family to this campground. We had two "pull-through" sites. These sites are a joke! There are six sites per road. There is literally no where to pull off of the camp road to set up your RV site. The RVs must be set up in the road! The tow vehicle can park off to the side once unhooked but the RVs in the middle sites of the camp road are pinned in. This could potentially be dangerous if there ever was an emergency!

If that's not bad enough, the sites are SUPER unlevel. Notice the photo in my review. We had to use so many leveling blocks to assist our auto-leveling system!!

The "pull-through" sites are literally on a hill. The sites small and there is no privacy from your neighbors.

When we arrived our sites were not clean at all. There was trash on the ground, as well as dog feces, and the grass was very tall.

Lastly, the dump station for the campground is on the side of the public roadway, at the entrance of the park….which is on the top of a huge hill.

The surrounding area is beautiful! We will certainly go back to the area but we will find a better campground the next time.

We will not return to this campground.

    Gassabias Lake campsites

    Remote and private

3 secluded spots on a dead-end road. Wooded, path to the lake. Each site includes fire ring and picnic table, and share a pit toilet. Strictly carry-in, carry-out. Road into camp is dirt and some of it can be rough. Cars can make it just go slow. Atv trail access from camp - can ride to Lincoln, Ellsworth, Grand Lake Stream, Machias and all points downeast from here.

No fee, first-come first served. I have never seen all 3 sites in use at one time.

Over 20 miles from paved road. Designated cell reception about few miles away. Accessible to Jack’s Snack Shack (seasonal food and firewood).

This cluster is a well-kept secret. It’s a great backup plan if the Unknown Lake sites are full. Being wooded, it’s a tad cooler here, but the bugs are still obnoxious. If you enjoy listening to Loons, they put on quite a symphony. The lake would be great for kayaking or SUPs and fishing.

    Unknown Lakes campsites

    Remote and scenic

Handful of spots, directly on the beach of a quiet lake. The road runs between middle and lower Unknowns and the scenery is wonderful. There is a pit toilet, shared by 8-10 spots. Strictly pack-in/pack-out. About 20 miles from paved road and 10 miles from spotty cell service.

No fee, first-come first served. These fill up FAST in the summer. Don’t worry - if it’s full when you arrive head to Duck Lake or Gassabias Lake camp sites. They don’t fill up (in my experience).

Bugs here can be THICK so be prepared.

Sites include picnic table and fire ring. Some are private and others are more exposed. There are also “group sites” on both sides of the road driving in, and they’re more wooded than the beach sites.

Our first viewing of Northern Lights was on the beach here. Super quiet, amazing sunsets and lots of wildlife.

    Duck Lake Public Reserved Land

4-5 campsites off the main logging road.

Awesome spot if you like being out in the middle of the woods. Roughly 16 miles from last paved road. No sound or light pollution. You really wanna see stars, go here! Only out houses available.
