## Overview

 Reuter Campground, located on a hillside of Ponderosa pine and grassy understory, offering a peaceful setting for guests seeking recreation and relaxation in northeastern Wyoming's Black Hills National Forest. The campground is named after Emil Reuter, a German immigrant who made his way into the canyon in 1893 and spent the rest of his life prospecting in the area. 
## Recreation

 Black Hills National Forest offers a multitude of recreational opportunites throughout all seasons. Hiking, fishing, horseback riding, mountain biking, and riding off-highway vehicles are popular in summer and early autumn. Winter landscapes are ideal for snowshoeing, skiing and snowmobiling. From this campground, visitors can access the Sundance Trail System from Reuter Trailhead. The secluded trails of this system weave through a network of densely forested canyons and open ridges that form the Bearlodge Mountains. Some ridge tops look out to the Custer Expedition Route, Devils Tower, and the Twin Missouri Buttes. Elk, deer and turkey are some of the more common wildlife seen along the trail. Parts of the trail system have existed since the 1800s. As routes to reliable water and the only access to some parts of the Bearlodge Mountains, they played a key role in the rich mining history of the area. The trail system is maintained for hiking, horseback riding, bicycling and cross-country skiing. Motorized vehicle traffic is not allowed; however, some portions of trails follow existing Forest Service roads open for motorized use.

 Stretching across northeastern Wyoming and western South Dakota, Black Hills National Forest encompasses nearly 1.25 million acres of rugged rock formations, canyons and gulches, open grassland parks, tumbling streams, deep blue lakes, and unique caves. Derived from the Lakota language, the words \"Paha Sapa,\" meaning \"hills that are black,\" honor the dark, pine-covered hills rising several thousand feet above the surrounding prairie. Bighorn sheep navigate mountainous terrain, while elk, deer and pronghorn gather in forests and prairies. Bald eagles, hawks, osprey, peregrine falcon, and hundreds of other bird species can be found in the forest, especially along streams, lakes and rivers. Mountain lions, although rarely seen, also call this area home.

The Best Camping Near Sundance, Wyoming

Today's goal was to visit Devils Tower. We wanted a low cost campground in the trees and Reuters fit the bill perfect. It's about 20 miles from Devils Tower, just outside of Sundance, WY. Direction to campground well marked and access easy in our 26' travel trailer. This no-frills campground has 24 sites mostly for smaller rigs or tents, but a few were perfect for our size. Looked like staff had just finished painting tables and buildings and vault toilet facilities were very clean. Water spigots were already on for the season, but no host was there yet. Beautiful pines shaded all sites. Had 3 bars of cell signal and picked up 10 TV stations with our antenna. Would definitely recommend. Cost $10.

Nothing Like a Campground All to Yourself

Stayed 2 nights, very quiet, had water, trash and pit toilets, site 13 is first come first serve PULL THRU big enough for 5th wheel, good Verizon cell service, 30 minutes from devils tower and 5 minutes from Sundance, which Sundance rest area has free water and dump station,,

nice little campground at the bottom of the bearlodge mountains...we look for rocks in these hills so it's a perfect place to camp

The first feel of this camp was a bit off. We waved to a couple sitting beside their camper and they just stared. However the campground winds around in some fun loops with many sites to choose from. The host has firewood available for purchase but it’s too warm for a fire for us. Several clean vault toilets are in different places- garbage cans too. 

  

Reuter is close to Sundance if you need supplies. It’s also on the way to Devils Tower. There are some other draws here too. A nice hiking trail has a couple options. There is a parking area at the trailhead or just leave from camp. I love that they have a trail map at the check in sign. If you want to be taller, continue driving down the road to the end of the pavement- about 10 or so miles. Warren Peak sits at 6656 feet and has a fire tower you can climb up. Spectacular views of the Black Hills and beyond. Along the drive you pass a few spots for dispersed camping giving you the option to camp for free. 

  

This was another nice stay in the Black Hills National Forest.

Peaceful campground with the friendliest, most helpful host. He came over when he saw us taking awhile to start a fire and chopped kindling from our firewood, even leaving us his axe for the night. 

Quiet, pretty campground

Camped at near this campsite May 2020. The campground is not currently open, likely due to COVID** We have a Tacoma and RTT - we headed a little further down the road and there were a few camping spots in the forest land. We saw a couple other campers and weren't bothered at all. Most cars could make it easily, but we witnessed a handful of big RV rigs who had to back out and it didn't look easy! There is a lake a ways down the road, Cook Lake, that isn't open yet. It cannot be accessed due to snow banks.

We were noticing all the campgrounds around seemed to NOT have trees. We are tent camping, so shade is of utmost importance. Reuter did not let us down! Surrounded by big pines and aspen trees, it was a diamond in the rough for sure. Big pines all over. Our campsite had a good level spot for the tent. IT was DEAD quiet at night. We got an amazing night sleep. Bathrooms were clean. No running water because it’s technically the off season...but no complaints from us!

Honesty GREAT

Great stop not too far from the road. There was only one other camper there when we went. Weather was perfect for hammock camping which all the trees made easily possible. Little bit of road noise but if you’re looking for a somewhat primitive spot with the conveniences of a bathroom (along with other basic amenities; table, fire ring, etc.) this is a solid happy medium. This is the kind of off the highway camping spot that gives you that good balance of nature and quick access to get back to ramblin’.

This is a perfect spot close to the highway if you want easy access and to forget how close you are to getting back on the road. Easy access to spots.  There’s something for any tent, RV, travel trailer you wanna bring. 

Peaceful campground just near Devil’s Tower

It’s located not too far from the main highway but far enough to escape the noise. The trees are beautiful and sites are well spaced out. There is water and pit toilets. Picnic tables present. Very peaceful campground. Would return! It’s about an hour or so from Devils Tower.

Favorite of a month long trip!

We came her after visiting The Devils Tower heading to Custer State Park. It is a small campground just of the highway. There are vault toilets, fire rings, and water. Very quite and peaceful. 

Loved it!

Host was kind and funny and sold wood for fire rings. She even drove up to our site and checked us in curbside as we got in just after 8pm and she wasn't there when we arrived. It is priced well for large, nicely wooded sites. Just above basic with pit toilets and water.  5-10 minutes to Sundance for amenities. 30-35 minutes to Devil's Tower. 

Would absolutely stay here again!

This campground is very nice. It is in the woods so plenty of cover. Clean pit toilets and water is available. Just 30 minutes from Devils tower. Would stay again.

Nice clean and quiet campground 

We arrived the day before they stopped taking reservations. We were confused as to what was reserved and what wasn’t. No host on site, no payment envelopes…. We picked a spot and unhooked and fortunately had no issues. The second day they brought payment envelopes and posted a sign. It’s $10/night mid September til May and no reservations taken. 
Other than the confusion, it was a really nice campground. Quiet, all the spots were shaded and spread far enough to give you some privacy. We had some visitors the morning we were packing to leave 🐄🐄🐄🐄

Stayed 8/1/2021.
Nice, quiet campground.  Plenty of shade.  Easy drive to Devils Tower/Bear Lodge.  Vault toilet cleanliness was barely okay.  Water spigot available.  Would stay again.

Shaded campsites 

Camped here for over a week for the November whitetail hunt. Easy access to the forest and close enough to town if you need anything. Limited spots if you have a huge camper. It was half full during this time.

Whitetail deer camp

All the sites are attractive and spread out for the most part. It is more cramped near the beginning of the loop. Some sites are reservable and most are FCFS. There are a few vault toilets and no hookups. Some of the sites don’t look to be compatible with large campers. Very quiet and mostly empty in this 3rd week of May. Beware that the cost is actually $22/night, I looked at the forest service website and it said $14 so we only brought enough cash for 1 night it turned out. 

Pretty Sites Among the Ponderosa Pines

We only stayed one night, but was very nice and the campground host was very gracious. No problem maneuvering the 38’ MH into our spot. Hiking and biking trails nearby. No electric, no water, no sewer. Just camping amongst the trees. 

Tucked away near Sundance

Just a few miles, northwest of Sundance, WY.  There might be about 20-25 sites and most of them are not level. I only saw one  pull through site, and it was short and uneven.  Sites are FCFS, or I'm told you can reserve online. I arrived on a Friday (FCFS), and only about 5 or 6 sites were taken. Only 
amenities available were pit toilets and 2 water spigots.  It's very quiet!!! Devils Tower is about 30 miles away.

Tim and Kelly are super nice and keep the grounds very clean. Quiet and peaceful 

Great place

Got here in November only a few sites were taken up, seems pretty clean, bathrooms are decently clean for being in the off-season. Got here at night but there seems to be good hiking in the area. Very low-key, definitely  recommend.

Dispersed Camping

Stayed here for two separate 3 day stays.. nice quiet campground that was never busy. Was here the 2nd week of June and outside of the rain had a pleasant stay. Vault toilets were clean, and grounds well kept. Kelly the campground host was super. Sites are on the small side, but saw some pretty big rigs in there. One loop is reservable, the other first come/first served. Plenty to do in the area, of course Devils tower and the city of Sundance was very nice. Museum, grocery, bars, restaurants too. Lots of hiking nearby.. 

Had a great stay

I stayed in a weeknight in June, and there are about a dozen first come, first served spots. I arrived about 8pm, and the campsite was about 30% full. The price increased to $22, and that was ok for me outhouse was clean, and there is water spigot in each grouping. 

Beautiful and peaceful

We were yhere during shoulder season. Many First come first serve spots open. It was quiet and very wooded and secluded. Saw deer in the morning and cattle roaming in the evening.

Quiet out of the way

Tim and Kelly are great hosts. The sites are spacious and shaded, but not very private. Toilets were very clean. If you are planing on visiting Devils Tower, this is far enough away from the crowds, but close enough to visit. If we come back this way we will camp here again.
