The Best Camping Near Monticello, Utah

Big open lot at the end of CR 0083 near Monticello, UT in Monti La Sal national forest. Good a flat with a nice view. Also high elevation so it’s good and cool at night.

I was looking for a dispersed area to camp for the night. I drove down CR 0086 into the end. Very little option to camp on the side of the road. Ended up at the end of the road when was at the bottom of an old ski hill (Blue Mountain Ski Area). 

The hill was teeming with life. When I pulled up there were two mule deer drinking from a small runoff. They stayed within 50 ft of us for over an hour. Also saw several turkeys wander through the same water. There must have been a well used game trail near by. 

My mixed feelings come from the fact there was no privacy. I set up a small camp before dusk on the far side of the lot. About an hour later another group set up camp about 100 ft away. I wouldn't camp here again but would spend the day exploring. 

Mixed Feelings

As one of the earlier reviews mentioned, this is a nice, flat spot with room for several parties. We have a small RV and it made it up the dirt road with no problems. There would be plenty of room for any sized RV to park and turn around. Gorgeous mountain views, and lots of wildlife. We saw probably 30 deer, multiple cows, a whole group of wild turkeys, and lots of different kinds of birds. Our dogs were thrilled to run around the large site and up and down the hill adjacent. The only drawback was there were A LOT of cow patties, so if you have dogs with you and they are anything like ours, they will be attracted to them like magnets. Ick. Probably would not return because of that, but would otherwise. Coordinates were very accurate. Just be very careful on the drive up as we encountered several deer jumping into our path for the full four miles up from town, one time dramatically enough that we had to slam on our brakes quite suddenly and very narrowly missed an accident. Would not recommend arriving after dark because of all the free roaming wildlife.

Beautiful spot, easy to find

We hadn’t camped where The Dyrt directions take you, although that was a nice spot, more so for an RV though. We camped a little down the road at a turn off. It had a fire ring but because of the ban, we couldn’t start a fire. There were several spots for a tent, maybe big enough for an RV. 
The campsite was against a fence, and on the other side of it were cows. It was quite close to the road but it wasn’t busy enough for it to be a problem. There were also deer and cows grazing outside of the perimeter of the fence. I’m a farmer so I loved the sound of the cows at night and in the morning, some may not like it as much.

We pulled into this spot at 10 pm and there were only 2 other campers on site. There was plenty of parking and we got right at the base of the old ski run. We watched two separate flocks of turkeys and a large head of deer with our morning coffee and breakfast.  

Remember there are no amenities but if you're self contained it's good. I think the best way to describe in a nutshell is a large circular parking lot at the end of the road and base of a ski run. Well away from town but not too far out of the way.   

Absolutely zero noise, beautiful scenery and milkyway clear skies.   Yes, there are cow patties but only off the road. 

Great Boondock Spot

That’s what we like about BLM when we find gem spots like this. Spacious room to park, nice to see wild deer close by.

Easy spot to get to, paved road most of the way. Watch out for deer if you’re driving in the evening, we saw lots of them. The pull in spot had one other truck and trailer when we arrived and we had room to turn our rig and towed vehicle around to get the mountainside view. Little muddy in spots. Very quiet.
