Warning 3 Alerts are In Effect

California State Parks wants to thank our park visitors for helping us keep our parks and environment clean. In 2018, State Parks installed new RV dump station collection systems at ten state park units as part of a pilot program to help us protect the environment and are added amenities for our visitors.

Following the success of the initial pilot program in 2018, an additional eleven park units have been added to the program.  The service is available for campers, day-use or transient visitors for $10-$20 per use, depending on the location. Please note that visitors with current reservations arriving on or after April 13, 2021, who are interested in using the RV dump stations may be required to pay the use fee. The price per campsite for these state parks does not include the use of a dump station.  View the following link:  Camping Information

In an effort to maintain consistency throughout California State Parks’ reserveable camping inventory and due to a limited number of reservable campsites at the park unit, each profile is limited to 2 reservations at the same time.

Thank you for your patience as we finalize the 2026 inventory. Please continue to check back. We will be releasing the inventory as soon as it becomes available.

Description

Vehicle on beach camping

You are driving onto the beach and camping, what more to ask for! The actual camping section of the beach is a little tight even with an empty 160 available sites (vehicles) still available. So weekends or sold out nights pirably too tight for me. Cars may drive by any time of the night. The waves sound and general experience is worth it, especially considering you can move into the more open day use are for the 7am-10pm day time.

I would recommend AWD unless you are able to plan your trip to stay on the firm sand. Don’t go Into The soft sand without awd

Solid Beach Camping

Great spot to pull up and get some beach time in. Busy during the day - folks riding ATVs till sunset, little less busy in the evening/night - still people parking rigs. You can also park and pitch a tent!

I saw multiple people get stuck, mostly 2WD cars and trucks with toy haulers/trailers. Lots of people down to help get people unstuck! Big fan of this spot!

4 x 4 recommended

We love being able to camp directly on the beach, and have done so many times in Texas and in Louisiana, but wouldn't recommend it here unless you are in a 4wd. We did see 2 skoolies on the beach, but then we also saw a pickup truck stuck in the sand in the parking lot outside of the beach, so there's that.

Camping overnight is only $10, and the beach is wide open for camping. It was very busy during the day on a weekday in August, so I can imagine the weekends are packed.

This is a fun beach in a fun, low key beach town, and we love coming here.

Fun place!

Great place to rv camp. Pretty cheap considering your camping right by the water. Can get windy at times and weekends/ holidays get super crowded. The dunes are fun if you have a motor vehicle/ATV. Downfall there’s no dump station but you can call a company to empty your tanks( for a cost)

Dunes

This is one of the few beaches you can drive on in CA. Come prepared with 4WD. Ride ATVs on the dunes and camp on the beach. Lots of trash and always windy.

The soft sand can be challenging to navigate, and vehicles frequently get stuck, especially two-wheel drive cars and trucks pulling trailers or toy haulers. Be prepared for beach driving conditions and consider lowering tire pressure for better traction if your vehicle is suitable for such adjustments.

Is Oceano Dunes SVRA currently open for camping?

The camping area allows dogs and provides a unique opportunity to camp directly on the beach. Always check with California State Parks for any temporary closures or restrictions before planning your trip.

Is camping allowed directly on the beach at Oceano Dunes?

Yes, camping is allowed directly on the beach at Oceano Dunes SVRA, making it one of the few places in California where you can camp right on the shoreline. You can drive your RV, vehicle, or pitch a tent on the beach itself. The camping area provides a unique experience with ocean views and the sound of waves all night long. Keep in mind that the beach environment can be windy, and the camping section can feel somewhat tight even when spaces are available. Weekends and holidays tend to get particularly crowded.

How do I make camping reservations at Oceano Dunes SVRA?

Reservations for camping at Oceano Dunes SVRA can be made through the California State Parks reservation system. The campground offers approximately 160 vehicle sites on the beach. How do I access the camping areas at Oceano Dunes?

To access the camping areas at Oceano Dunes, you'll need to drive onto the beach through the designated entrance. The beach access point allows vehicles to drive directly onto the sand and proceed to the camping section. Be prepared for potentially challenging driving conditions, as the soft sand requires careful navigation. The actual camping section is located a distance down the beach from the entrance. Vehicles may drive by throughout the day and night, so position your campsite strategically if you prefer more privacy and less traffic noise.
