Not private for tent camping

I have been to Raccoon Creek many times as it is one of the closest camping places to the Pittsburgh metro area.  The park it self is large, has over 40 miles of trails, a fantastic backpacking loop setup for beginners, and a nice lake for swimming, fishing, ect.  I would give the park as a whole a 5/5 but for tent camping the campground is mediocre.  It is a really large campground with lots of adjoining loops.  We stayed in the tent loop at the back of the campground.  The area is not wooded at all and most sites look right into the sites next to them.  If you are like me and crave privacy, avoid.  The bathroom was rather dirty also.  There is a trail that leads down from the tent loop to the beach which is cool but very very steep (not for too young or old).  Overall, if you are looking to stay in a camp in this park I'd suggest doing the backpacking loop instead.  Grab your permit at the park office, park at the heritage trail lot in the southern end of the park and hike to the Pioneer shelter.  Sites 4 and 5 are amazing.  Note though that the Pioneer site does not have water so you will need to filter water from a stream on the way, though there are many opportunities.  The Sioux site is overgrown and is not worth backpacking to, though it does have a water pump and is close to the park office.

Wilderness getaway

Very nice park with secluded sites. Clean restrooms and showers. Best fishing around. We visit this place often.

Great for families

We stayed at a site that was right next to the playground. The kids meet a few new friends and we enjoyed them laughing and playing. The site itself was great big enough for what we needed. Water was close and so was the bathroom. It’s close to the airport so planes would fly over head (pretty high). If that’s not your thing then you might not like the noise but me and the kids loved it. We will definitely go back.

Not really RV friendly

They have some spots for small trailers, but we’ve only ever been able to tent there. Nice clean facilities, plenty of hiking, fishing and swimming.

First time camping on a tent

I had the most wonderful time on my first tent camping at Racoon Creek. We made a fire, hiked by the moonlight and swam at the warm lake at night. There were other campers around but we rarely noticed them and only when walking to restrooms at the daylight. I will be back soon

Wildlife and lake views

We stayed at Raccoon Creek State Park while attending a wedding near Pittsburgh, as it was one of the closest campgrounds. We really enjoyed our stay. There were water spigots very near the campsite, as well as a very nice camp host who was great to have conversation with. The showers might scald you, though, so be careful! We had a great time exploring the trails and biking around the park, but be prepared for plenty of hills. We stayed here for a week and really enjoyed our stay.

Great outdoor getaway from the city life!

I started camping at Raccoon back in the 60's as a little person with my family. Hadn't been for several decades, but finally got back with my husband and cats the past couple of years. Great park ony a 1/2 hour outside of Pittsburgh. The campground has something for everyone - RV sites with electric (although I wouldn't recommend bringing your 40' rig...sites can be a tad on the smaller side) or secluded sites just for tenting. Restrooms are clean and well maintained. Two loops allow pets F and B, but only some sites in F have electric, so be sure to check if that is what you need. There are many hiking trails that are not too strenuous or you can take a 10 mile trip around the lake. Lots of birds for viewing, particularly near the beach. You can put in your kayak or fish on the shore at the fairly large lake. Boats do require a launch pass which you can obtain from the park office. And don't miss the Wildflower Preserve if you are there in May or late summer! Great place to take the family and relax in nature!

Nice Plan B...when You Can't Get to Ohiopyle...

Raccoon Creek is half an hour from Pittsburgh, and it's a big park with lots to discover. In addition to 7,000+ acres of woods, Raccoon has pretty much anything a camper could want: good scenery; a nice little lake with a beach and concession stand (in summer); more than 20 miles of trails; a backpacking loop with primitive camping and Adirondack shelters; picnic areas; cabins; fishing; hunting in the late fall; a canoe rental shop… The campground is enormous and has all different kinds of campsites--sunny, wooded, solitary, tightly packed, dog-friendly, dog-free. It's even got a few dismal little sites that are open year-round, except that the road to them may be snowed over in winter. Make sure you check out the online map and reserve a good campsite in advance, because a lot of them are crowded too close together. Raccoon is great, a fun, woodsy place. It gets really crowded and doesn't exactly have the wilderness feel that I like. Hiking here is more like "taking a walk in the woods," which is better than no walk in the woods. Raccoon is the # 1 "go-to" for Pittsburghers who don't pre-book at Ohiopyle or some wilder place in time for Memorial Day or Labor Day weekend.

Great camp- no firewood

The campground was great- plenty of room, bathrooms close by, dog friendly areas, staff present etc. The one problem we had was that there was no firewood for sale in the campground or the park for that matter. It had been listed as an "amenity" online so we had planned to buy some when we set up camp. We had to go out of the park and drive about 20 minutes to the closest store.

Other than that it was a great weekend!

Decent state park, close to Pittsburgh

We lived close to Raccoon Creek State Park for several years and spent a significant amount of time at the park, campground, and lake / beach area through the years. We have stayed in both the main campground area as well as the group camping area (for Girl Scouts), and both are well maintained - the main campground offers more facilities including bathrooms with showers (group camping area when I stayed in it just had portable outhouses). Trails in the area are well known for wildflowers and have some nice ecology, but there are definitely better hiking trails in the greater Pittsburgh area. The small lake in the park can be fun for families, and the kids enjoy the beach with concession stand and small playground.
