Best Tent Camping near Wishek, ND

Several small city parks in the surrounding communities offer basic tent sites, including Streeter City Park approximately 30 miles northwest of Wishek and Zeeland City Park about 35 miles southwest. Langeliers Bay, situated roughly 50 miles southwest of Wishek along the Missouri River, provides more remote tent camping opportunities with drive-in access.

    Beaver Creek

    Lovely waterfront campground

Stayed 3 days, due to not wanting to drive in the storm the last day. First 2 days were lovely and just the right amount of shade from the trees. Only 2 vault toilets, 1 in each of the RV and Tent areas. Could have done with a regular clean, but there were only 2 sites taken when we stayed. An extra 2 toilets and shower block by the boat ramp. Also a playground. (Note: Drinking water and showers are seasonal, so check the website if you need these to be operational) Each of the RV sites had their own grill and picnic table. Looked like the tent sites may share these facilities. Lots of locals visit to fish, and seemed to be quite lucky as well with Catfish and Walleye. Lovely place to visit for a few days. Also note, if you have an annual parks pass, you may get up to a 50% discount when booking.

    Beaver Lake State Park Campground

    Very well maintained park

Beaver Lake also known as Red Lake is an older North Dakota State Park and it's very well done. The bathrooms are closed so I can't see in and all of the modern camping is on the same loop but there's also group camping and tent camping and cabins. They're genuinely is a lot of trails to hike and well they may seem uninteresting from a distance because they're North Dakota prairie We saw everything from prairie chickens to turkeys to deer on our walk. The lake is bigger than you think doesn't seem to have a whole lot of use We came on a Saturday we're probably going to stay and work for a week and have only seen a handful of people come in the meantime. I needed to use my Tesla Rome network I don't have good enough cell reception to work from here so keep that in mind if you're a traveler who's working.

    Streeter City Park

    Tight spaces in a row

I was looking for an offbeat place to spend a free night during the Memorial Day weekend so we stopped. It would be fine if there was some space between the campers but it's tight and full and I don't particularly want to camp on top of one another. But if you're in the area I think it might be fine and actually kind of fun and the weather is great it's fun to explore the small North Dakota cities but not this time we'll find a different place to stay.

    Lakeside City Park - Eureka

    Nice overnighter.

This campground has 18 sites. 1 - 13 are 30 - 20 amp service. Sites 14 - 18 are 50 - 30 -20 amp service. Located centrally in the park is a tornado shelter, kind of a nice touch. There are 4 fire pits to share between 18 sites. There is no sewer at locations. No water at locations, but they do have a hydrant located near the garbage dumpster. Bathrooms are OK clean. Showers are free. Campground is located next to high school athletic fields, so was very busy on Friday night. There is a beautiful Veterans Memorial across the street that was nice to walk through. Also across the street is a boat ramp and parking for a nice little lake. Grounds were mowed nicely and fairly clean of litter.

    West Pollock Recreation Area

    Pleasant overnight

The grounds here are extremely well manicured. Flush bathrooms were clean and fresh, smelling. Pit toilets were clean. Picnic tables are in near new condition. Back in sites are fairly level. It rained while we were there, and the sites drained quickly. Views of the Missouri River (Lake Powell) extraordinary. Power as you would expect, 50, 30, 15 amp service. EMS showed no faults in electrical connections. $20.00 a night. Potable water at shower house and dump station.

    Whitestone Hill Historic Site

This is a campground you can stay at across from the battlefield

There are no services here there's a bathroom a couple of picnic tables but it's a big wide open space that I'm sure you can park anywhere you want. The attraction of course is the Whitestone battlefield across the small lake from here which is walkable distance and has a memorial to what happened on that site.

    Medina City Park

    Nice, quiet, clean and cheap

Stopped at this campground on our way across the state.  It was a great place to be for the night.  It was just far enough away from the I-94 and the railroad tracks that we got a quiet night sleep.  Bathrooms were clean, lots of picnic tables although they are in the park, not right next to the campsite.  Hookups available and a great playground for the kids.  Only $15 for the night which includes water and electric.

Guide to Wishek

Tent camping near Wishek, North Dakota offers primarily dispersed options in a prairie landscape characterized by rolling hills and occasional wetlands. The region experiences distinct seasons with hot summers and cold winters, making late spring through early fall the optimal camping period. Most camping areas sit at elevations between 1,800-2,100 feet above sea level with limited tree cover for shade.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Langeliers Bay provides basic access to fishing on the Missouri River system. A visitor noted, "Stayed 1 night on a fishing trip. We had fun caught a couple fish" at Langeliers Bay, though facilities remain minimal.

Explore small towns: The region contains several small agricultural communities with local events during summer months. When camping at Streeter City Park, campers can walk to the town's small business district for supplies and local interaction.

Wildlife viewing: The prairie landscape supports various bird species and small mammals. Areas near water bodies offer better wildlife spotting opportunities, particularly at dawn and dusk when animals are most active.

What campers like

Basic amenities access: Streeter City Park provides drinking water and toilet facilities, making it suitable for campers who prefer some conveniences. A reviewer mentioned the park can work for those "in the area" though they noted the tight spacing.

Off-grid experience: Lake Pocasse offers a more remote camping experience from May to September. The lack of developed facilities appeals to campers seeking minimal infrastructure and fewer restrictions.

Affordability: Most tent sites in the region have minimal or no fees. This makes the Wishek area accessible for budget-conscious campers looking for economical outdoor accommodations without reservation requirements.

What you should know

Limited facilities: Most campgrounds near Wishek lack showers, electrical hookups, and dump stations. Zeeland City Park offers tent camping but provides no drinking water or toilet facilities, requiring complete self-sufficiency.

Weather considerations: The area experiences strong winds due to the open prairie landscape. Summer temperatures regularly reach the 80s and 90s°F, while thunderstorms can develop quickly. Bring appropriate shelter and secure tent stakes.

Spacing challenges: Site proximity can affect the camping experience. One camper at Streeter City Park observed it has "tight spaces in a row" and noted, "I don't particularly want to camp on top of one another."

Tips for camping with families

Bring entertainment: The undeveloped nature of most sites means no playground equipment or recreational facilities. Pack games, books, and activities appropriate for prairie environments.

Water safety: For camping near Prairie Knights Marina, supervise children near water at all times. The Missouri River system has currents and drop-offs that present safety hazards.

Supply planning: Most tent camping areas near Wishek require bringing all necessary supplies. Stock up in larger towns before arrival, as small local stores have limited inventory and operating hours.

Tips from RVers

Size restrictions: Most camping areas near Wishek cannot accommodate large RVs. The primitive nature of sites like Langeliers Bay supports smaller vehicles, with one camper noting it's "small and only off grid tent camping."

Level ground scarcity: The rolling terrain creates challenges for finding perfectly level parking. Bring leveling blocks and stabilizers when visiting areas without designated pads.
