Dispersed camping near Mandan, North Dakota covers three free campsites ranging from primitive boat ramp access to sites with picnic tables and lake views. These free dispersed campsites suit both tent and RV campers, with options from self-sufficient primitive stays to sites offering trash disposal and scenic lake views. Mitchell Lake offers the most favorable conditions, with picnic tables, trash disposal, and permission for both tent and RV camping. The site features two picnic tables, including one under a portico, and maintains a quiet, secluded atmosphere with beautiful lake views. Campers report this as exceptional free camping, particularly during weekday visits in the fall season.

Mckenzie Slough State Game Management Area provides limited dispersed camping with significant restrictions. No alcohol, fires, drinking water, or sanitary facilities are available. The area accommodates only tent camping with drive-in access. Recent visitors note the extremely limited space, describing it as "very small" with room for approximately four RVs adjacent to a dusty gravel road.

Lake Holmes Boat Ramp represents the most primitive option, with minimal documented amenities. This site functions primarily as a boat launch point with incidental camping opportunities. No permit is required, but campers should prepare for self-sufficient stays with no established facilities.

All dispersed camping in this region requires visitors to pack out all trash and practice Leave No Trace principles. Mitchell Lake prohibits leaving items behind to reserve spots. Weather conditions vary significantly by season, with harsh winters and pleasant summer conditions. Campers should bring all necessary supplies, including drinking water, as none is available on site. For overnight stays during hunting seasons, wearing high-visibility clothing is recommended when moving around camp areas.

      Nice quiet stop

It’s a pretty flat square parking lot that does the trick for a quick stop to rest. It’s about 2 miles off the highway and about a mile down gravel road. It was quiet and no one was there but I imagine it may get busier during hunting season as hunting is allowed there. Bigger rigs may have a harder time parking there

      A Pleasant Surprise

Despite the fact this campground had no reviews here, and just looked like a boat dock when we looked at it on Google maps, we took a chance because we needed to be close to McClusky the following morning.

It was beautiful, quiet, there were two picnic tables including one under a portico and even a dumpster. The sign at the entrance only really said they don't like you to leave things behind to hold a spot.

We have a Class B camper so we had our own toilet with us. It was a beautiful place to wake up the following morning. Some of the nicest free camping we've ever done!

To be fair, we were there on a weekday in late September, maybe it's busier during high summer. Still, highly recommend.

Good Overnight Spot - Check for Ticks

Great overnight spot for a quick stop and easy parking. There aren’t many amenities, but it serves its purpose well for an overnight stay. One thing to be aware of is the ticks. It wasn’t a deal breaker for us, but after spending about an hour outside, each of us had several ticks on our clothing, so be sure to check yourself and pets.

The area can accommodate large RVs, but it’s fairly small, so maneuvering is easiest if there aren’t many other vehicles parked there.

      Very Quiet Spot

We stopped here to spend the night and worked well for us. Very quiet spot and saw a beautiful sunset. The gravel road is dusty and a little bumpy, but the spot is nice.

      One night stay over

Lots of room, grills, dumpster and cleanest porta potty I’ve ever seen. Couldn’t have asked for a better over night. Little far from 94. Also, town has a gas station. About 2 miles from site.

Was here on a Monday night and no one else was here but the neighbor cows.
