    Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground

    Birch Trees Everywhere!

This campground tucked away in the turtle mountains next to Lake Metigoshie is definitely worth the visit! The campground is located in a state park so rules do apply. Tents, rvs, cars are are easy to maneuver in and out with a pump station located in the park. The 4 season playground is home to a ski park near by with a brand new chalet and updated runs with a terrain park( depending on snow conditions) public beach access, hiking trails, snowmobile trails, and the International Peace Gardens located not to far away either! I recommend camping in the fall with tree colors! WOW!

    Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground

    Beautiful State Park

This State Park is in North Dakota near the Canadian border. With a very large body of water that has many amenities from fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding. There are bike & canoe/kayak rentals right outside the park and a couple different campgrounds to choose from inside the park, ours was just a few feet from the lake and fishing dock. Depending on which campground you choose you will either have a vault toilet or a more convenient bathroom with toilets & showers! Staff was very nice and accommodating. There was even an Ice cream truck that rolled thru everyday for the kiddos!

The backup campsites are tight. But once setup it feels very private. The bathroom are decent. Great swimming lake.

    Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground

    Need to return!

We got there at dark, staff was super helpful with the park pass and buying wood. We camped in the North Star primitive sites, water spigot available, vault toilet not to far. We really enjoyed riding bikes on all the trails, only one we didnt get to ride was the Deer loop. Looking forward to returning to do some canoeing/kayaking , looks like there's a good loop set up with portages.

    Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground

    Better than I expected.

Did not disappoint in anyway. Camp sites are close but had trees and natural grasses so it feels like you are in your own private woods. Well kept hicking trails, beautiful lake with docks and nice beach. Offered kyak rentals, water and electric sites. A must see.

Guide to Bottineau

Lake Metigoshe State Park Campground sits within the Turtle Mountains, a geological region that rises 800 feet above surrounding plains. The campground offers multiple accommodation options near the Canadian border, with several loops providing varying degrees of privacy and lake access. Yurt camping in Bottineau, North Dakota experiences temperature extremes with winter lows reaching -40°F and summer highs regularly exceeding 80°F, requiring campers to prepare for seasonal conditions.

What to do

Hiking network trails: The park maintains several interpretive trails that showcase the region's unique ecology. The Old Oak trail features educational signage and diverse plant species. "I walked the full Old Oak interpretive trail and the pamphlet that you pick up on the way in to camp was nice to have. There is poison ivy here. There was some on my campsite and some on the interpretive trail," notes Jennie S.

Water recreation options: The park provides access to multiple lakes suitable for fishing, swimming, and paddling. "With a very large body of water that has many amenities from fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding. There are bike & canoe/kayak rentals right outside the park and a couple different campgrounds to choose from inside the park," explains Brandi M.

Gardens exploration: The International Peace Garden offers extensive grounds for walking and cultural appreciation alongside camping. "The Gardens themselves are so beautiful to explore and there are lots of picnic areas that are super pretty! The gift shop is wonderful and has a great mix of Canadian and local North Dakotan products and goodies," recommends carrie H.

What campers like

Privacy between sites: Many campsites feature natural vegetation that creates separation between neighbors. "Camp sites are close but had trees and natural grasses so it feels like you are in your own private woods. Well kept hiking trails, beautiful lake with docks and nice beach," reports Patti E.

Tent platform construction: The raised platforms at International Peace Garden enhance the yurt camping experience in Bottineau, North Dakota by providing stable, dry surfaces. "My husband and I have stayed at this campground twice now and both visits were amazing! We like to choose sites surrounded by trees and this place does not disappoint. Plus, the raised tent platforms are a huge benefit," shares Elizabeth S.

Clean facilities: The washrooms and shower buildings receive regular maintenance. "Full hookups, clean sites and facilities—nicest public showers we have ever seen! Went fishing, swimming, explored the hiking and bike trails and did some geocaching," states J S.

What you should know

Entry documentation required: When staying at the International Peace Garden, bring proper identification for border crossing. "Definitely expensive. 25 to get in and then 25 to camp but full hook ups and nice spots. Quiet with few other campers and remember to bring ID to get back into the US," advises Teresa T.

Seasonal insect concerns: Ticks can be prevalent in forested areas during warmer months. "I do not recommend coming to this spot. I am not sure when tick season ends but if you are going to go go in the ticks are dead. It was hard for me to dock this place a star, but because of the ticks that is why I did so," warns Emily S.

Navigation challenges: Finding certain campgrounds may require persistence as signage can be limited. "Signage isn't super clear when coming into the park to find the campgrounds: it's verrrrry far away and will make you question if you took the right road or not," mentions carrie H.

Tips for camping with families

Dedicated recreation areas: The park offers designated swimming areas and playgrounds. "Swim beach was a bit of a walk, but totally worth it!! Great sandy beach & nice water!! Activities set up for families/kids each weekend. Nice playground between loops too," describes Ason S.

Convenient facility placement: Family-friendly campgrounds position amenities with children in mind. "The playground is located next to picnic and bbq areas, all near the water and restrooms close by. Fishing docks are plentiful. Brought my kids and my dogs for a great time and wasn't disappointed," shares Nikki M.

Seasonal treats: During summer months, mobile vendors visit the campground. "There was even an Ice cream truck that rolled thru everyday for the kiddos!" notes Brandi M.

Tips from RVers

Concrete pads for leveling: Several campgrounds offer paved surfaces that simplify setup. "Each site has a concrete pad (some tent sites have wooden platforms) so leveling is super easy! Mature aspen and oak trees make up the majority of the grounds and this makes each site feel super isolated and private," explains carrie H.

Quieter camping loops: For RVers seeking peaceful yurt camping near Bottineau, North Dakota, certain areas offer more seclusion. "This is a very nice place with clean bathrooms. The spaces are a good size, some with water and power," notes Mayra V.

Generator restrictions: Some campgrounds limit generator use, which affects non-hookup sites. "We were in a tent campground and a camper came and parked and ran a generator for hours," mentions Jackie R.
