Best campground in NC

Growing up in Asheville, I have been going to Davidson river campground since I was a little girl. It was my family’s weekend getaway. This campground is where I learned to ride a bike without training wheels, conquer river rapid while floating on a tube, and ate ice cream every night for dinner. Some of my fondest memories are at this place.

Recently, I traveled back to the campground with a good friend of mine and all of the memories of camping as a child came back. You have the town of brevard so close that you can go grab a beer or a nice meal if need be. You have the start of the Art Leob trail which is in my opinion one of the most beautiful trails In the area. And also the hub bike shop which has awesome food and good for hiking! It was as though I never left and frankly after that weekend, never wanted to leave again. It is the best campground in N.C.!

Great hiking, very scenic, best from May-October

Campsites vary from primitive to group sites with restrooms and pavilions. No showers or services in Pisgah National Forest.

Known for trout fishing and hiking trails for all levels. Mountain streams offer fun for kids and kid-wannabes. There are equestrian trails and a riding stable nearby. Horse camping is popular.

Nicely situated between lots of good outdoor activities

This is a good campground if you are trying to enjoy the Pisgah National Forest. This area has become over run with tourists and the "free" campsites have mostly been comandeered by squatters who rotate from site to site every 14 days. The campground has a great river to swim in and is close to Brevard and Asheville but reservations are recommended. This place is packed most all of the summer now so you don't want to show up without a spot.

Fun at Davidson River

Campsites are shaded and roomy. It is within 2 miles of stores in the Brevard Area. Wood is available at the campground. There is a parking place for cell phone reception but not good reception, This is a bear habitat. There are showers and bathrooms. Reservations are good to have as it fills up quickly. It is very well kept. Fishing, swimming and tubing.

Beautiful and convenient!

Right on the river and on a rec path and bike trail. Restaurants and shops nearby. It rained every afternoon but you just have to plan for it. Great sites with trees and plenary of room. Lots of bath houses. Very few sites have electricity and you need to make sure you are in an area you can use your generator during the day ( if that applies).

white squirrels are famous here!

Bevard is home to 100 waterfalls! Some are roadside and others are a short hike away. Absolutely gorgeous!

Beautiful tranquility on the river. Fun for family. Dog friendly

Davidson River was our first excursion with Ilsa @ilsasadventures. She was just a pup. The grounds were well maintained. Families enjoyed the river with a swimming hole & tubing close by. Love the waterfalls within short distance drive. Brevard, and Asheville not too far away.

Campground is located on the river. Not as private as other campgrounds I've been to. There was an exercise trail between my site and the river that was heavily used. Definitely fills up with families on the weekend. Location in Transylvania County is great because of the proximity to a ton of waterfalls.

Large, private sites in the heart of Pisgah!

Great location!!! Close to downtown Asheville and so many waterfall hikes all around! Our site was large, wooded, private and on the river. The campsite hosts were very helpful and everyone was so friendly! Highly recommend this campground!

Located right inside Pisgah National forest this campground is perfectly set for all adventures. If you’re looking to see the sights of the forest and take a drive the scenic parkway then youve come to the right campground

on the other hand if you’re thinking of riding the mtb trails you’re in luck. They start literally across the davidson river from the campground. Bike shops, coffe and supermarkets all within

Big campground, but convenient

Davisdon campground is very popular so it's near impossible to get a reservation for the weekend unless you plan far ahead. It's popular for good reason. It's within 5 minutes of a grocery and restaurants, but feels like you're pretty remote. You're close to tube rentals and the campground is on the river. You will not find privacy here, the campground is massive. The river is not quite close enough for young kids to play unsupervised, but it is close enough to easily access. It would be a great place for families with older kids as the roads are great for biking around and the swimming holes are close.

Excellent Location but Beware the Crowds

This is a POPULAR spot in the summer, and why not? It's beautiful and close to several incredible destinations. You can take a short hike up John Rock for a wonderful few, head down the road a bit for a horse back trail ride, slide down the popular sliding rock (just a short drive down the road) or spend the day climbing at Looking Glass in the amazing Pisgah ranger district. If you're up for a little bit further of a drive head on up to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

There is a cool fish hatchery with a nice little natural history museum/display and friendly staff to help answer questions. There are flush toilets available at the fish hatchery as well.

If you don't mind the crowds then this is a great spot to spend a few nights!

Popular spot

This place has everything...wireless, showers, bike path, tennis courts and horse stables down the road. Lots to do here on sliding rock, chasing waterfalls, hiking, and fishing. Be prepared for many cyclists on the road. There is a free primitive campground area on the road the horse stables are on if you are into that. This campground does fill up quickly, it's a beautiful area and only a few miles from Brevard.

Rain, Rivers and Waterfalls!!

Last September was a wet one...with record amounts of rainfall and flooding. It was in such a time that we decided it was good to go camping.

It always seems to rain when I camp anyways...so why not go when its raining to avoid crowds and enjoy solitude.

Once again, interested in checking out as many waterfalls and cascades we could locate, the water flow will be so much more dramatic amidst heavy rainfall.

Davidson River Campground is an earshot from Brevard, NC and tucked into the outskirts of Pisgah National Forest. Check out their website for all things interesting: http://cfaia.org/davidson-river-campgrounds-in-north-carolina/

Basically, we had the run of the campgrounds other than a few RV's. So we chose a tent spot where the river curled around us on three sides. Probably not the wisest choice during heavy rains and flooding...but threw all caution to the wind.

You will have a well-drained gravel tent pad...which makes staking your tent out a bit of a pain, but you won't endure puddling. The entire campground is meticulously maintained when we were there...and the staff at check-in were quite personable and fun.

As facilities go...they are nice...and you can enjoy a nice hot shower...a seeming rarity these days.

Davidson River was flowing but appeared unaffected by the heavy rainfall, as it was crystal clear...and gave no indication of rising over its banks. Which was much appreciated being perched 30 feet away. The rhythmic sounds of the river offered sound sleep all night.

Looking Glass falls are just down the round into the forest and always a treat.

Into Brevard, there are some cool shops worth visiting...and plenty of eateries. One such shop was Backcountry Outdoors, which offers all things glorious for the camper/backpacker/hiker/bicyclist.

It is a rare occasion to have such a nice, quiet campground situated so closely to wilderness and civilization...offering the best of both worlds when its a deluge outside.

You can't go wrong with this pick!

Great location

Great camping spot! We were camping close to the large swimming area, so, you could swim, fish, or just put your feet in. You are also close to Brevard. You can scoot into town to grab supplies or whatever you needed to do. Close by is Sliding Rock and for those into beers, Oskar Blues is not too far as well.

Great campground with shady sites that are not too close together. The onsite swimming hole and tubing was a major plus with our 6 yr old son. Great location in the Pisgah Forest and also close to Dupont Forest. We will definitely return.
