What to do
Hiking trails access: Little Pee Dee State Park Campground offers several walking paths around Lake Norton with varying difficulty levels. "This Park is a really nice place to recharge and enjoy nature. You'll fall asleep to a chorus of frogs every night!" reports Suzanne B.
Fishing opportunities: Lake Waccamaw State Park Campground provides shoreline fishing in shallow, warm water suitable for beginners. "We kayaked and fished while we were here. The rangers were helpful and checked in to make sure we didn't need anything," notes Sara H.
Water activities: The shallow water at Little Pee Dee State Park Campground makes it ideal for non-motorized boating. "Locals often come here for fishing and non-motorized boating. We were fortunate to witness a mass crayfish event--the recent flooding had brought them out of the swamp and up the spillway," writes Courtney B.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: CarrollWoods RV Park at Grapefull Sisters Vineyard offers well-spaced camping areas. "The sites are well-spaced with a picnic table, fire pit and grill at each site. There's a pool that was unfortunately out of service during most of our visit," notes Nancy C.
Unique amenities: The combination of camping and wine tasting draws visitors to CarrollWoods. "Beautiful, family owned campground. Large spacious and clean well organized sites. Picnic tables and BBQ grills on sites. Winery with taste testing hours and wine to purchase," Robert M. shares.
Natural soundscape: Multiple campers mention the peaceful sounds at Little Pee Dee State Park. "The trees are maintained so that they are not too thick. This allowed us to enjoy hunting for various flora. My overall impression of this park is of a well maintained and peaceful park," says Kami B.
What you should know
Road conditions: Some campgrounds have challenging access roads. One visitor to Little Pee Dee notes, "Road to campground is horrible! Very narrow, trees hanging over it, dirt, but huge holes! Obviously needs to be graded."
Limited services: Remote locations mean fewer amenities. "This campground is definitely off the beaten path, about 15 miles from I-95. There aren't any stores around, so get your food and supplies before you arrive," advises Suzanne B.
Seasonal considerations: River Island Adventures offers glamping that varies by season. "This is a water adventure company that also has camping on the property. You can reserve a camp spot without signing up for any river activities, but camping does give you a little discount on activities," explains Moriah H.
Tips for camping with families
Activity variety: Smith Lake Army RV Park provides extensive recreation for military families. "Playgrounds were phenomenal for kids. Bike and Hiking trails all through out the site. Fishing as well - with respective fishing license," notes E G.
Indoor alternatives: When weather doesn't cooperate, seek campgrounds with covered options. "We stayed during a storm and the camp staff adjusted their events to focus on indoor entertainment for the families. Wonderful," shares E G. about a nearby resort.
Accessible nature experiences: Lake Waccamaw State Park offers educational opportunities. "The visitor's center has a nice exhibit on the Carolina Bays," mentions Courtney B., noting this feature can engage children when not swimming.
Tips from RVers
Site angles and sizes: Willow Tree RV Resort offers large sites with strategic positioning. "The sites are huge and along the lake where I camped, they are angled so that you don't really see much of your neighbors," Rose S. explains.
Campsite surfaces: Different parks offer varied surfaces affecting setup. "Every spot is concrete, pull through, fire pit, and picnic table," notes Tucker M. about Willow Tree RV Resort, contrasting with sandy sites found at other locations.
Bathroom accessibility: For those not using onboard facilities, bathroom location matters. "Don't forget anything in the car. Sites 2-5 are a quarter mile plus from the parking area... especially sites 4 and 5 (we were in 4) are very far from the bathroom," warns Kristin T. about Lake Waccamaw State Park.
